(a) THE REVIEW OF LITERATURE

I was asked by my guide to study the following research articles and relevant chapters
from the following books for my research work.

equilibrium model, Int. J. Heat Mass Transf. 45 (2002) 2221-2228.

Brinkman convection using a thermal non-equilibrium model, Int. J. Heat Mass

PROGRESS STANDARDIZATION IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

During the period, I learnt about the importance of thermal non-equilibrium model and
the basic equations involved by studying research work conducted by Banu and Rees (2002)
(mentioned above). Further, I critically reviewed the paper by Malashetty, Shivakumara and
Kulkarni (2005) (mentioned above). I learnt the usage of plotting package ORIGIN as it is
useful in plotting the figures. Besides, I acquired the knowledge about the usage of normal
mode analysis technique and understood its usage in analyzing the linear stability aspects of
fluid dynamical problems. In particular, I completely worked on the linear stability aspects
of the problem studied by Straughan (2013) (mentioned above) as it was relevant to my
research work.

(d) DISCUSSION OF THE WORK DONE INCLUDING NEW FINDINGS

I was asked by my guide to investigate the boundary and inertia effects on the onset
of thermal convection in a layer of porous medium under the influence of local thermal non-
equilibrium and Cattaneo effects in the solid. The Brinkman model was considered to
describe the flow in a porous medium and the problem was analyzed for stress free
isothermal boundaries. Analytical expressions for the occurrence of steady and oscillatory
convection were obtained. The Cattaneo effect is found to alter the nature of convective
instability when compared to its absence. It is observed that the presence of Cattaneo effect is
to instigate the occurrence of convective instability via oscillatory motions when the solid
thermal relaxation time parameter τ exceeds sufficiently high value. The effect of inter-phase
heat transfer coefficient H is found to delay the onset of stationary convection but it exhibits
the opposite trend on the onset of oscillatory convection. Moreover, the threshold value of H
decreases with increasing τ noticeably and marginally with increasing the Darcy-Prandtl
number PrD and the Darcy number Da, while it increases with increasing the ratio of
conductivities α. The effect of increasing Da is to delay the onset of stationary and
oscillatory convection, while increasing τ, PrD and decreasing α is to hasten the onset of
oscillatory convection. The size of convection cells is enlarged with increasing τ, PrD and
Da, but it is narrowed with increasing α. The findings were written in a research paper form
and the same has been published in an international journal.

porous layer, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 71, pp 39-47, 2015.
