Introduction to Oral Diagnosis & Treatment Planning

Examination and investigation of the new patient and how to communicate a solid
relationship of trust that will produce a well organized treatment plan

The Historic Profile & Review of systems

The first meeting with the patient, Dental History, Medical Histrory, review of
systems, diseases and medications and charting all information in the patient’s file

Examination of the Head & Neck

The actual physical examination of the patient from the outside, skin, eyes, nose,
hair, ears, neck, and lymoh nodes and what to look for in this examination

Examination of the Oral Cavity

Entering the area of specialty and examination of all tissues inside and around the
oral cavity including soft tissue and teeth, the students will be taught what to look
for as variations of the norm
Dental Caries and Treatment Planning

The nature of dental caries and their classification, treatment planning and
prevention

Non-Carious Tooth Surface Loss

Students must be able to diagnose tooth attrition, abrasion and their causes,
treatment and prevention

Differential Diagnosis of Odontogenic Pain

Pain that its source is from dental origin. Differential diagnosis, diseases of the
pulp, vitality testing and treatment planning

Differential Diagnosis of Non-Odontogenic Pain

Pain that is arising from sources other than teeth (e.g. Muscles, TMJ,
Neuropathies,…) and how to differentiate it from dental pain. Possible causes and
treatments available

The Concept of Treatment Planning (Putting it All Together)

How to make a good treatment plan, including priorities of treatment, and


Documentation, Consultation, and Referrals

Planning the Treatment of the Medically Compromised Patient

Patients with compromised health need special precautionary measures, certain


diseases will be overviewed and their possible link to dental treatment and the
measures to be taken when treating these patients
