Glass ionomer

glass ionomer cement (GIC) are bioactive materials were found in

1969,this materials used for different situation such as luting
,restoration and for line and base but other cements didn't use widely
like GIC

GIC depend on acid-base reaction (Chemical reaction ) this acid is

polyacrylic and the base is glass powder, the glass usually
fluoroaluminosilicat, this reaction release cations such as Al, ca, F when
mix powder and liquid

Carboxylate group in acid bind to Ca and Al and give polymeric acid that
give the texture in addition it can bind to Ca in enamel or dentin

The features of GIC include biocompatibility so it doesn't release any

harmful product ,its contain F as main component so its flouride release
in addition to adhesive properties, marginal adaptation, resist to wear
and it's not sensitive technique in contrast when we compare GIC to
.other restorative material it's not aesthetic, lack strength and toughness

GIC has short shelf life and the viscous are high so they add acid called
tartaric acid to increase the working time

Studies showed that use GIC in fissure sealants give less retention in
compared to resin based

resin-modified GIC

In this type they add methacrylate to polyacrylic acid and they add
iniatior that depend on light cure then the reaction continue by chemical
reaction

Reinforced cement

They invented it to make the alloy more strength but it’s not aesthetic
but we can use it to core buildup
Conventional GI with high viscosity

It's used in atrumstic restorative treatment(ART) and as temporary

restoration in addition we use it in non-stress bearing area such as class v
.

Glass ionomer can release Fluoride over time so we can use it as

prevention and can recharge F from saliva and from toothpaste and its
more flouride release in compare with other materials

Glass network release alkaline agent which increase PH more than 7.4.
Biomaterials don’t release any harmful or toxic materials to living tissue
and its promote a proper bond between material and living tissue so its
intermediate between neutral and bio absorbable material
