PE 608 Social Media Policies

1. Create a list of a minimum of three social media policies for your Department - explain

the rational of each policy.

- No athlete should post photos, videos, comments, and etc. showing the personal use of

alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. (Examples: holding cups, cans, shot glasses etc.)

- No athlete should post content that is unsportsmanlike, derogatory, demeaning, or

threatening towards any individual, program, or team. (Examples: taunting comments at

student-athletes, coaches, or teams; or derogatory comments against gender, race, and/or

religion)

- No athlete is to give out information that is sensitive or personal to the athletic program

or school, which is not public information (Examples: tentative or future team schedules,

athlete injuries, eligibility status, or travel plans)

2. Explain your rational behind each consequence.

- For the first policy, athletes should always represent the school and themselves in the

highest manner because student athletes are always in the public eye.

- For the second policy, athletes should always be the bigger person by showing

sportsmanship regardless of what is going on. There’s no need to take shots at another

individual, program, or team.

- For the third policy, whatever is going on behind closed doors should stay behind closed

doors because it’s not everyone’s business to know what’s going on behind closed doors.

3. Create a list of consequences for each policy you listed above.

The first consequence will be a written warning. The second consequence will be a meeting with

the athletic director and the head coach. The third consequence will be determined by the athletic

director and the head coach which may include possible suspension from his/her athletic team.

4. Explain your rational behind each consequence.

The first consequence is a warning just to say, “Hey, you made a mistake and mistakes happen.

Let’s fix it before it’s gets out of hand.” The second consequence is the athlete messing up again

and the coach saying, “Hey, I talked with you once already. Maybe I didn’t make it clear the first

time so this time we are going to talk to the athletic director and see if he/she can make sense of

what your actions are to correct the issue. And the third consequence is almost like the final

straw depending on what the athlete’s three violations are for. The third consequence is a

meeting between the athletic director and coaches to determine if they should suspend the athlete

from participating in games and/or practices or if they should just cut you from the team all

together.
