Kenowa Hills Central Elementary Lesson Plan 

Lesson Objectives:   

● SWBAT repeat rhythms to make an association with rhythmic ideas aurally and verbally. 
● SWBAT make symbolic associations with rhythm notation. 
● SWBAT improvise simple rhythms.   

Standards: 

● MU:Cr1.1.3 (b) Generate musical ideas (such as rhythms and melodies) within a given 
tonality and/or meter.   
● MU:Cr1.1.3 (a) Improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas, and describe connection to specific 
purpose and context (such as personal and social).   
● MU:Cr2.1.3 (a) Demonstrate selected musical ideas for a simple improvisation or 
composition to express intent , and describe connection to a specific purpose and context .   

Materials: 

● Whiteboards, markers, and erasers  


● Concert songs  

Procedures: 

1. Teacher chants in “Ta’s” and “Ti-ti’s” 


a. Students respond with claps (​AO​) 
b. Students respond with “Ta’s and Ti-ti’s” (​VA​) 
2. Teacher chants neutral syllables 
a. Students respond with “Ta’s” and “Ti-ti’s” (​AO​) 
3. Review hand gestures 
a. Quarter note, eighth notes, quarter rest, half note 
4. Teacher chants neutral syllables 
a. Students respond with hand gestures  
5. Teacher chants “Ta’s” and “Ti-ti’s” 
a. Students responds with hand gestures (​SA​) 
6. Teacher shows the rhythm notation on whiteboard  
7. Students will be asked to draw each symbol on the board 
8. Students will be asked to write out rhythms teacher provides 
a. Teacher will also have students repeat back rhythms with hand gestures to make 
further symbolic association 
9. Students with strong understanding of rhythm may be asked to improvise rhythm for class 
to perform  

10. ASSESSMENT:  
a. Teacher will be looking at all student answers and will check for understanding  
b. “Show of thumbs” will be asked after to gauge student self assessment 
11. Rehearse concert songs 
a. Hip Hop Elves, Peppermint Candy Cane, Over the River, Rocking around the 
Christmas tree
