Saxophone Lesson Plan

Concept(s): Whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth notes, dotted quarter, triplets, major scales, vibrato.

Objective(s): Students will practice building tone by playing long tone whole notes and half notes. Students
will practice articulation by playing call and response patterns using quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted
quarter notes, and triplets. Students will practice one octave and two octave major scales.

State Standard(s):
§117.208. Music, Middle School 1
(c) Knowledge and skills.
(2) Foundations: music literacy. The student reads and writes music notation using an established
system for rhythm and melody. The student is expected to:
(D) read music notation using appropriate cognitive and kinesthetic responses such as inner
hearing, silent fingering, shadow bowing, or Curwen hand signs;
(3) Creative expression. The student demonstrates musical artistry by singing or playing an
instrument, alone and in groups, performing a variety of unison, homophonic, and polyphonic
repertoire. The student makes music at an appropriate level of difficulty and performs in a variety of
genres from notation and by memory. The student is expected to:
(A) demonstrate, alone and in groups, characteristic vocal or instrumental timbre;
(B) perform music alone and in groups, demonstrating appropriate physical fundamental
techniques such as hand position, bowing, embouchure, articulation, and posture;

Materials: instrument, essential elements book, scale sheet

Grade/Age Level: 6th grade/beginning student

Procedures:
 Students will gather materials, sit in their assigned seats, and assemble instruments.
 Students will begin warm up
o Teacher will model for students 4 beats on long tones and students will echo.
 Teacher will remind students to use a steady stream of air and blow their air all the way
through the whole notes.
o Teacher will model for students 4 beats of different rhythmic patterns containing quarter,
eighth, dotted quarter, and triplet notes, and students will echo.
 Students will play line 86. Tone Builder with smart music accompaniment
o Students will play one time through
 Students will play Remington 1a ascending
o Students will focus on blowing a steady stream of air to make notes smooth and connected.
 Students will take out scale grid and play major scales
o Students will sing chant associated with each key (Saxophone keys of G, C, D, F, and A)
 Ex. “Concert Bb is my G, one sharp F#, key of G)
 Students will play scale on half notes and quarter notes.
 Students will begin to use vibrato, pulsing in 8th notes
 Students will open their essential elements book and play line 120, 122, 124, 126, 127, 128, 129 and
130. Throughout the week, students will learn 132, 133, 134, 135, and 136.
o students will count the line
o students will say the letter names and finger
o students will play line
o Teacher will provide feedback and break down measures when needed.
o Teacher will allow for repetitions when needed.
 Students will review and play sections of Mechanic Monsters and Battle Command for spring concert.
o students will play 8 to 16 bar phrases at a time and then put more sections together to build
endurance.
o Teacher will provide feedback and allow for multiple repetitions.
 For the last 15/20 minutes of class the trombones, flute and oboe classes will join for students to get a
feel of what it is like to play with different parts and instruments.
