INTRODUCTION
The GEMS Module 2018 is an intervention by the English Language Unit of the Selangor
State Education Department to help schools in the state, improve the percentage of minimum
achievement in the UPSR English Language paper especially in the skill of writing. It can be used by
English Language teachers to teach writing skills as the activities provided in the module focus on
the process of writing. It also enables teachers to carry out scaffolding with their pupils, beginning
at word level, phrase level, sentences and finally to write essays on the topics given. It is hoped that
this module be a useful resource for teachers despite many other resources available in the market
as it is developed by a team of dedicated English Language teachers from the different parts of
Selangor.
The module is suitable for the use of Level Two (Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6) pupils
who are from the low to intermediate level of the language. This module is also suitable for pupils
who did not achieve the Level One screening of LINUS2.0. With the use of the GEMS Module 2018,
it is hoped that pupils would be able to enhance their vocabulary based on the topics given and
acquire basic writing skills. With sufficient guidance from the teachers using the module, pupils
should be able to become independent writers at the end of their primary schooling.
The module is divided into three sets according to the themes. There is a variety of topics
covered in each set, with different activities outlined for each topic. The activities vary from word
level, phrase level and finally to sentence and paragraph levels. This is to ensure that pupils are
given the necessary guidance to write essays. Furthermore, the topics chosen are suitable for Year
4, 5 and 6 pupils and the activities given are aligned with the content and learning standards
outlined in the KSSR Standard Curriculum and Assessment Document (DSKP).
