CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of The Observation

The way how and what everyone talk are usually different. We thought that its difference
between boys and girls are interesting enough to observe and put a big attention in it. Because
teenagers are around us and we are part of them. That is why we made the topic we wanted to
ask to our participants closed enough to teenager’s life like us so it will create a pleasure for
them to participate in.
It is not even a secret if girls are labeled talkative by the society and both girls and boys
have different expressions while talking. But are these assumptions right? That is why we
want to prove it by doing this kind of research.

1.2. Limitation and Formulation of Problem

1.3.1. Which one is more talkative, boy or girl?
1.3.2. What is the most expression of language use among boys and girls?

1.3. The Aim of the Observation

1.1.1. To know which one is more talkative between boy and girl.

1.1.2. To know the most expression of language use among boys and girls.

CHAPTER II

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
2.1. The Characteristic of speaker in Sociolinguistics
Linguistics has many branches, one of them is Sociolinguistics. In general, the study of
Sociolinguistics is about the relationship between language and society or how language
varieties differ between groups separated by certain social variables (Wikipedia, 2018). It
shows that the usage of language is influenced by social variables or characteristics of the
speaker like gender, educational background, profession, religion, social status, age, and
geography and these characteristics are also the reasons why everyone talks differently.
For the explanation of how gender influenced language, many linguists, social scientists,
psychologists, and other specialists maintain that there are very real differences in the way
men and women tend to communicate (Norris, 1995). According to Basow and Rubenfeld
(2003), women are, overall, more expressive, tentative, and polite in conversation, while men
are more assertive, and power-hungry (Merchant, 2012). According to Dr. Brizendine (1994)
women talk three times as much as men and on the other hand, Drass (1986) found that in an
experiment on gender identity in conversation days men speak more than women (Language
and Gender: A Study Case).

THE OBSERVATION METHOD

3.1. The Place and Time of Observation

The observation held in Bandung city, West Java province, at 22-27th of May, 2018.

3.2. The Objective of the Observation

The objective of the observation is to determine which one is more talkative between
boys and girls and to compare the most expression of language use among boys and girls.

3.3. The Population and Samples of Observation

The population of this observation are consisted of four teenagers (mean age: 19-20
years old). Two out of four are girls and the rest of them are boys. They are Irfan Sujana,
Ardiansyah, Noor Aida, and Siti Nurul Husna,

3.4. The Technique of Data Collecting

This research is used quantitative technique of data collecting and its instrument is
WhatsApp voice note-based interview. They were all given two questions to answer orally
based on their experiences. When the interview finished, we count the quantity of words they
talked and the quantity of time they spend while talking. After that, we divided their quantity
of words with their quantity of time to determine how fast their speed of speech. We also
analyzed expressions of language they used and determine which one boys or girls used the
most.

1. Participant 1: Irfan Sujana

a. Question 1

Refa : “Kamu pernah di php in sesuatu ataupun seseorang kan?”

Irfan : “Tentu pernah sekali.”
Refa : “Apa yang paling bikin kamu kecewa? Coba ceritakan!”
b. Question 2

Refa : “Kamu pastinya pernah diputusin atau mutusin cewek kan?”

Irfan : “Diputusin pernah, mutusin juga pernah, ya lima puluh-lima puluh lah.”
Refa : “Rasanya setelah putus itu gimana?”
Irfan : “Ya pokoknya, salah satu perasaannya ya sakit hati lah, apalagi sama orang
tersayang yang udah diperjuangin trus ga dihargain rasanya sakit apalagi kalo ditinggal tanpa
alasan, diselingkuhin, itu lebih parah sih sakitnya.”
2. Participant 2: Ardiansyah

a. Question 1

Refa : “Kamu pernah di php in sesuatu ataupun seseorang kan?”

b. Question 2

Refa : “Pernah diputusin atau mutusin cewek ga?”

Ardi : “Pernah”
Refa : “Setelah putus itu rasanya gimana?”
Ardi : “Kalo saya sih biasa aja, karena saya bukan tipikal orang yang memikirkan suatu
masalah”
Refa : “Trus, perasaannya gimana?”
3. Participant 3: Noor Aida

a. Question 1

Refa : “Kamu pernah di php in sesuatu ataupun seseorang kan?”

apalagi dijanjiin gitu kan, trus malah ga jadi”
a. Question 2

Refa : “Pernah mutusin atau diputusin cowok?”

Aida : “Kalo aku biasanya dua-duanya pernah. Soalnya, tergantung cowok nya sih, kalo
biasa aja, malah kita nya mah dia ikutan marah gitu ya udah weh biasa aja kalo kaya gitu”

4. Participant 4: Siti Nurul Husna

a. Question 1

Refa : “Kamu pernah di php in sesuatu ataupun seseorang kan?”

Husna : “Pernah, sering malah”

Gara-gara dia nya
udah ga nyaman sama aku, aku nya kaya anak kecil gitu”
