THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
2.1. The Characteristic of speaker in Sociolinguistics
Linguistics has many branches, one of them is Sociolinguistics. In general, the study of
Sociolinguistics is about the relationship between language and society or how language
varieties differ between groups separated by certain social variables (Wikipedia, 2018). It
shows that the usage of language is influenced by social variables or characteristics of the
speaker like gender, educational background, profession, religion, social status, age, and
geography and these characteristics are also the reasons why everyone talks differently.
For the explanation of how gender influenced language, many linguists, social scientists,
psychologists, and other specialists maintain that there are very real differences in the way
men and women tend to communicate (Norris, 1995). According to Basow and Rubenfeld
(2003), women are, overall, more expressive, tentative, and polite in conversation, while men
are more assertive, and power-hungry (Merchant, 2012). According to Dr. Brizendine (1994)
women talk three times as much as men and on the other hand, Drass (1986) found that in an
experiment on gender identity in conversation days men speak more than women (Language
and Gender: A Study Case).

CHAPTER III
The observation held in Bandung city, West Java province, at 22-27th of May, 2018.
The objective of the observation is to determine which one is more talkative between
boys and girls and to compare the most expression of language use among boys and girls.
The population of this observation are consisted of four teenagers (mean age: 19-20
years old). Two out of four are girls and the rest of them are boys. They are Irfan Sujana,
Ardiansyah, Noor Aida, and Siti Nurul Husna,
This research is used quantitative technique of data collecting and its instrument is
WhatsApp voice note-based interview. They were all given two questions to answer orally
based on their experiences. When the interview finished, we count the quantity of words they
talked and the quantity of time they spend while talking. After that, we divided their quantity
of words with their quantity of time to determine how fast their speed of speech. We also
analyzed expressions of language they used and determine which one boys or girls used the
most.

5.1. Conclusion
The results of this research have revealed that girls have a higher number of speed of
speech (Noor’s: 2,05 word/sec and Siti’s: 1,75 word/sec) than boys (Irfan’s: 0,96
word/sec, Ardi’s: 1,26 word/sec) which shows that girls are more talkative than boys and
the most expression used by boys is regretting while girls mostly used complaining
expression.
