Cummins Insite – ECM Recovery Process

Concern: Download to an Engine Control Module stops midway through and

the error 27508 is displayed. After a calibration transfer fails,
communication with the ECM cannot be established using the normal
procedure to connect to the ECM. Even after a calibration authorization
password has been entered the calibration cannot be completed using the
normal method.

Resolution:
1. Ensure that the machine’s key switch is in the ON position.
2. Disconnect the 4-pin power connector on the ECM for 30 seconds.

3. Reconnect the 4-pin power connector on the ECM.

4. In the Insite software, ensure that the connection type is set to ‘Inline
II, Auto Detect, COM1’ (displayed in lower right corner).

5. Click on ‘Connect to ECM’ from the left column. Insite should

establish communication with the ECM and error code ‘5080 – The
ECM is ROM booted’ will display.

6. Click the [OK] button to acknowledge the error.

7. Click on ‘Calibration Selection’ from the left column.

8. Select the ECM code to download by double-clicking on it. This will
bring up an ‘ECM calibration download wizard’.

9. Click the [Next] button to continue.

10. A calibration Authorization screen will display.

11. Contact ASIST to obtain the required calibration authorization

password. Provide the following information when contacting ASIST:
a. ECM serial number
b. PCID
c. Requested ECM code
d. Machine model
e. Machine serial number

12. Enter the Calibration Authorization Password and click the

[Next] button to continue. The following screen will display.

13. Click the [Next] button to continue. The following screen will
display.

14. Click the [Next] button to continue. An ‘Adjustment

Confirmation’ Screen will display.

Caution - Turn the tractor’s key switch to the OFF position prior to
clicking [OK].

15. Click on the [OK] button to continue. The download will start.

16. A screen will appear when the download is at 99% saying that
the ‘Calibration Transfer Failed!’.
Note: The calibration has not failed; the download is complete at 99% and
has transferred successfully. At this point the Insite software tries to
reset the ECM and perform validation. The ECM requires both constant
power and keyed power when the ECM is reset and will say that the
download has failed because it can’t perform validation without the key in
the ON position.

17. Click on the [OK] button to continue. Error 27508 will display.

18. Click on the [OK] button to continue.

19. Click the [Next >] button to continue.

Note: Steps 19 & 20 require no waiting. Simply click [Next] and [Finish]
as the screens appear.

20. Click the [Finish] button to close the ECM calibration download
wizard.
21. Turn the tractor key switch to the ON position and click on
‘Connect to ECM’.
22. Verify the software has been loaded successfully by going to
‘Features and Parameters’ > ‘System ID and Dataplate’ > ‘Calibration
Information’ > ‘ECM code’.
