Klein, JoAnna. (2019, April 17). Look What the Cat Dragged In: Parasites. The New
York Times.
● A study published by Biology Letters found that outdoor cats are three times as likely to
contract a parasite infection than indoor cats.
● These findings support one side the debate regarding whether or not pet cats should be
kept indoors to protect the cats, wildlife, and pet cat owners.
● Because of the nature of the lives cats lead (hunting outdoors and laying on sofas and
beds), the study suggests that cats should be kept indoors as they spread dangerous
infections and parasites in some cases.

O’Loughlin, Ed. (2019, April 19). Lyra McKee, 29, Journalist; Killed Covering Northern
Ireland Unrest. The New York Times.
● Lyra McKee was shot by the New Irish Republican Army in Londonderry, Ireland while
covering violent unrest.
● Small republican factions in Ireland, including the New I.R.A. have created unrest and
attacked police officers and other security targets as a sign of disagreement with the Good
Friday Agreement of 1998. This agreement ended a disagreement between Roman
Catholic nationalists and the British Army, Northern Ireland police, and Protestant
Loyalists.
● This event has drawn attention to McKee’s journalism and writing work as well as shown
support from the L.G.B.T community.

Turkewitz, Julie. (2019, April 20). Columbine Survivors Reflect, and Reckon With Specter of
Future Shootings. The New York Times.
● Saturday, April 20, 2019 was the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School
shooting in Littleton, Colorado and was celebrated by survivors visiting the school with
their children.
● This event has instilled fear in survivors for their children as well as children around the
nation at schools as this event has inspired other shootings.
● The country has been unable to stop similar attacks however, Colorado has implemented
Safe2Tell for students to anonymously report tips and passed laws that require
background checks for gun purchasers.
Cogner, Kate and Wakabayashi, Daisuke. (2019, April 22). Google Employees Say They Faced
Retaliation After Organizing Walkout. The New York Times.
● Two Google employees organized a 20,000 person walkout from Google in November
2018 regarding the treatment of sexual harassment within the company.
● The two employees now say that their roles within the company have dramatically
changed, and one of the employees was demoted after the walkout, while Google claims
there was no retaliation for the event.
● This case has brought up 300 cases in which Google has paid off employees and has
caused Google to address these issues correctly.
