On 25th October 1983, the United States of America invaded Grenada and over 5,000 Marines were sent to the island after the government was overthrown in a bloody coup by a trained Cuban military force.There were over 1,000 United States civilians in the country with most of them being medical students. Overall, the U.S invasion was a success despite encountering resistance. The U.S civilians were rescued, and the Cuban troops surrendered and there were only 19 troop casualties in total. Space – NASA’s STS-7 mission NASA’s STS-7 mission was successfully completed in June 1983. The mission was carried out by 5 astronauts aboard the ‘Space Shuttle Challenge’ on a 6-day flight. The crew carried out several experiments and deployed two satellites. The mission was notable as being Sally Rider’s first ever space flight making her the first woman in America in space. Mario Bros Game The video game Mario Bros was released as a Nintendo arcade game in Japan in July 1983. The game was designed by Shigeru Miyaamoto and was a platform game with phrases. The Mario Bros game featured the new iconic character of Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers who battled sewer creatures in New York. Initially, the game was not a success at the time of its release as the video game industry was crashing at the time of their debut release. #MeToo Movement goes global
In 2018, the #MeToo movement took off in the United Status in the wake of the sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood Producer Harvey Winstein. The movement went global as millions came forward to share their stories. According to analytics from Google searches related to #MeToo and its variants remain high around the world and in 2018 the Nobel Peace prize was awarded to both Congolese physician and Yazidi assault survivor ‘for their best efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a use of weapons of war and armed conflict’. The United Status Leaves the Iran Nuclear Deal Donald Trump vowed on the campaign trail to withdraw the United Status from the Iran nuclear deal. In May 2018, Trump claimed ‘ it was a one sided deal that should’ve never ever been made’. Trump took steps against counsel of many of his advisers of America's closest allies. Secretary of Defence James Mattis was among the cabinet officers who argued that for all deals weakness it was better to stay in it. Dire Warnings about Climate Change A report released by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in October 2018 says we may have as little as twelve years’ to act or pass the point of return. To judge by the powerful hurricanes, devastating wildfires, floods and record breaking heat in 2018 that ‘Climate Change has fuelled’. Stating that ‘ we will not like the world we are heading forwards’.
