WRITING AND RECORDING MUSIC

Abstract

The process of writing and recording music is a complicated and ever-changing subject.

As music and technology advance, the process by which music is created must also

advance. Writing and recording are two separate tasks, but how one is done will almost

always influence how the other is done. Progress in either field will push progress in the

other. Music recording has had tremendous advancements throughout the digital age. It

is now possible for anybody to create high quality recordings from home with just a few

pieces of equipment and some knowledge. Some of the necessary equipment includes

a computer, an audio interface, a digital audio workstation, and the instruments that the

song calls for. All of this equipment has improved drastically and become much more

accessible as technology has advanced. The knowledge necessary to learn how to

record music is also much more readily available because of the internet. A vast amount

of information can be found on the internet to help novices learn to record properly. The

advances made in recording music have changed the process of writing music as well.

It is still a creative process that happens mostly in the writers head, but because it is

much easier to record, it is easier turn ideas into something real. Writing is not

something that can be learned as easily because it is a very subjective process.

Everybody has a different idea they want to get across to their audience. The songwriter

must learn to write the song’s rhythm, harmony, and melody to effectively express their

idea.
