Starters, Movers and Flyers are the three levels of the Cambridge Tests for Young Learners [CLETS]s

Discover English Starter


Discover English Starter will be the entry level for most students using the Discover English series. Using a carefully controlled range of structures
(Present Simple of be, have got and common verbs + the modal can) the 8 units of Discover English Starter introduces learners to a a wide range
of vocabulary and topics required in the CYLETs Tests.

Learners are exposed to many different types of listening and reading material and their comprehension is assessed through true/false
statements, sentence completion, Yes/No questions, WH questions, and completion of charts. The 8 episodes of the Magic Mirror story are told
through picture captions, dialogue text, and connected narrative text formats. The episodes provide a stimulus for acting out the stories.
Students learn to work individually, in pairs, in small groups and as a whole class, providing a rich variety of different formats for social
interaction.

Learners are trained in a wide variety of oral and written production tasks. They share personal information, describe their families, their
possessions and their homes. They go shopping and learn to ask and talk about purchases and prices. They talk about their favourite activities
and the times and places where they are enjoyed. They speak and write about their clothes, their pets, their diets, their rooms and their free
time activities.

New language is presented clearly, often through situationalized pictures, and recycled through the following units. Each unit ends with a revision
page in which the key language is revised and recycled.

In addition to content vocabulary, learners are introduced to a lot of key grammatical vocabulary including auxiliary verbs, adjectives,
prepositions and syntactic markers.

Discover English Starter is bright and colourful on the page. A closer inspection will show that it is also fun and exciting in the classroom with
regular use of dramatization, songs, rhymes, raps, and puzzles, as well as guided interactive tasks.

Cross-curricular content

Discover English Starter will be used by learners who are studying a much wider curriculum of subjects in their schools. The topic and content
material in Discover English Starter will enhance learning in these other subject areas. Learners will be introduced to habits in different cultures,
they will learn about life in Britain and other countries. They will learn how to describe their own families, homes, regions and countries in
English. They will also use skills such as map reading, creating bar charts, doing surveys and making posters.

CEF

Discover English Starter does not complete A1 level of the Common European Framework, but provides learners with a firm foundation to
continue with Discover English 1 and 2. Working with Discover English Starter, learners will gain a level of fluency and confidence in both
understanding and using English which is unusually good at this low language level.
