call to adventure
“Eugene, you must let the children come and visit us in
Nsukka… we don’t have a mansion, but at least they can get to
know their cousins (97).” A few days later Eugene makes the
decision, “ My driver Kevin will take them, tomorrow is too
soon. The day after… You will leave tomorrow, so go and pack
your things… (107)” This is a good example for Call of
Adventure because it show’s when Aunty Ifeoma ask her
brother for the kids to spend time away from home to try and
get to know their cousins better. She uses this as the excuse
that something is missing in their life, other than their
freedom. It also shows that Kamibili doesn’t even have a
chance to contribute to this decision.
The tone in this message was very strong. Aunty Ifeoma ask
Eugene right away for permission to spend more time with the
kids, already knowing that this might not happen. Pushing on
with reasons that seem believable helps her achieve this.
crossing the threshold
“ ‘Do you want to go to Nsukka?’ I asked…
‘Yes’ he said, and his eyes said that he
knew I did, too. And I could not find the
words in our eye language to tell him how
my throat tighten at the thought of five
days without Papa’s voice, without his

how both Kambili are excited to explore
this new place that they haven’t gotten to
before. It’s also a perfect quote to
demonstrate the crossing of the threshold.
Even though Kambili is excited go on a
small journey it also makes her rethink
that she’s never been away from what she
already knows.

This is the point where the person actually crosses into the field of

The belly of the whale represents the final separation from the hero’s

willingness to undergo a metamorphosis.

road of trials
The road of trials is a series of tests, tasks, or ordereals that
the person must undergo to begin the transformation.
Often the person fails one or more of these tests, which
often occur in threes.

meeting with the goddess
This is the point when the person experiences a love that has the power and
significance of the all-powerful, all encompassing, unconditional love that a fortunate

an actual goddess, the meeting of the
goddess step in Avatar has to deal with
Neytiri. Over time, Jake experiences
love with Neytiri that has significant
power over him. Towards the end of the LITERARY DEVICE

The ultimate boon is the achievement of the goal of the quest. It is what
the person went of the journey to get. All the previous steps serve to

Mastery leads to freedom from the fear of death, which in turn is the freedom to live. This is
sometimes referred to as living in the moment, neither anticipating the future nor regretting
the past.
After the harsh battle between the Na’vi tribe and the
humans, the humans are sent back to Earth due to
their loss. As Jake is split between two worlds, he
must decide which he will forever reside in. He
chooses Pandora. Through a spiritual ceremony, his
spirit is transferred to his avatar body, leaving behind
is paralyzed body. This is an example of Freedom to
Live, because he is getting rid of old emotion from
having to go back to his old body. Jake is finally able
to live the life he was born to live.

LITERARY DEVICE
QUOTE
A literary device that can be found in the quote is tone. The
(ALL CHANTING) (SPEAKING NA’VI) tone is celebratory. Members of the Na’vi tribe are praying
to Eyma in a ceremony to transfer Jake from his human body
to his avatar body. The use of no clearly spoken words by
characters adds a very powerful aurora to the sacred ritual.
