Sweden

Luke Myers

This is a free verse about someone living in the wilderness of Sweden. It starts of with
the person waking up from the cold because their generator has run out of fuel. The person
then goes to put fuel in the generator, but locks him/herself outside in the cold with dangerous
wildlife. He/she, living in the middle of nowhere, is so close to home that he/she can even hear
the comfort of the fire and kettle, but cannot return. The final line “I hear the wind barking and
howling, telling me to follow it towards a distant, yet comforting light” was written to make it
sound as if the wind pointed them to safety, but in reality it was a wolf, barking and howling at
the man/woman, telling them to follow the light, leading to his/her death.
