    Mary heard crying and found her cousin Colin, who was confined to a wheelchair due to illness. Colin's parents had both died, his mother during childbirth and his father from grief. Dr. Craven was Colin's guardian but Colin did not like him. When Mary told Colin about the locked secret garden, he wanted to see it and agreed to keep it a secret so they could visit together. However, when Dr. Craven unexpectedly saw Mary and Colin together one day, he was very happy to see Colin animated and smiling for the first time.
