Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit The students should be able to:
1. Classify the soils in sands and clays
according to the physical characteristics
2. To determine the stresses and pore pressure
in the soil due to overburden and surface
loads
3. Understand the concept of effective stresses
and their role in deformation and failure in
soils
4. Understand the similarities in the mechanical
behavior of loose sands and normally
consolidated sands and their differences from
dense sands and overconsolidated clays
5. Determine the strength and failure in soil
6. Understand basic concepts of seepage and
permeability of soils
