Roll frosting system Safety 1-1

1 Safety
1.1 Safety of persons
• Safety covers must always be installed and locked. Open or removed safety
covers are danger spots for crushing and cutting injuries.
• Always keep safety devices in good working condition. Safety devices must
not be bridged over or put out of operation.
• Maintenance work at the machine or parts thereof must only take place with
the installation at a standstill. It is absolutely imperative and without exception
that the installation is switched off and that the switch is locked!

1.2 Safety concept for the control units

The machine and installation control system supplied by Bühler is an integrated
part of the safety concept for the prevention of accidents. Prior to the commission-
ing of the machine the installation control system has to be checked by a Bühler
specialist.
If an installation control system for Bühler machines is supplied by third parties it
must be built according to Bühler specifications. Prior to commissioning it must be
checked thoroughly by trained specialists according to the instructions in the
documentation provided and released with a signature.

1.2.1 Connecting to the electrical mains

• Observe the regulations of the local safety authorities.
• The power supply has to be fuse-protected according to the local regulations.
• Check whether the operating voltage and frequency correspond to the
specifications given on the identification plate and in the control cabinet.
• All electrical connections to the control systems must be done according to
the wiring diagram to ensure that the phase conductors are really switched in
the case of single-phase power supplies.

1.3 Safety concept

If the roll frosting system MDMB is not used within this safety concept, the user
has to redefine the risk estimation of the dangers involved and has to take suitable
measures.
The design and construction of the machine comply with EC regulations and
USA-FDA regulations with respect to safety and hygiene.
The CE mark can be attached and the EC declaration of conformity issued after
commissioning and safety inspection.

1.4 Designated use

The roll frosting system MDMB is designed only to process the products in the
contractually agreed field of application. Any use beyond that is considered contrary
to its designated use.

2-2 Description Roll frosting system

2.2 Function
Frosting is a processing procedure in which abrasive (17) is blasted on the surface
to be processed in order to attain a certain roughness and structure of the surface.
This procedure is based on the injector principle. In order to attain a regular,
controlled roughness and structure of the roll surface, the roll must rotate and be
blasted by two injector blow guns (7) which move on a carriage (18) parallel to the
roll axis and in proportion to the roll rotation (2).
The injector works by compressed air that is blown into a sand nozzle via an air
nozzle, the bore of which is approximately half as large as that of the sand nozzle.
The expansion of the compressed air resulting thereof produces a vacuum that is
used to take in the abrasive.
The abrasive is mixed with the carrier air in the discharging mug (15) (see Fig. 2.2,
Pos. 15) which is installed at the deepest point of the abrasive bin (1). The abrasive
is added to the compressed air stream in the injector gun (7) and is accelerated in
the blasting nozzle (see Fig. 2.2, Pos. 7).
The used-up abrasive (fines content) is exhausted via the aspiration wall (9), filtered
in the attached small filter (12) which is equipped with a fan (11), and is then collect-
ed in the dust container (13).

4. Set the blasting nozzle carriage to a horizontal blasting feed of approximately

1.3 m/min. or approximately 7 rpm. This setting is executed via the
potentiometer at the control cabinet and can be adjusted to meet the current
requirements at any time.
5. Set the roll rotation to a circumferential speed of approx. 24 m/min or approx.
30.5 rpm. This setting can also be executed or changed via the potentiometer.
6. The secondary air ports located at the two discharging mug, which are installed
at the deepest point of the abrasive bin, must be preset.
The secondary air port shall be kept open approx. 10 mm
(Fig. 5.4 and Fig. 2.2, Pos. 15).
The correct slide position must be determined during operation.
For best sand-conveying effectiveness, the slides of the discharging mugs can
be readjusted.
If the sand-blasting guns operate in a pulsating way, there may not be enough
air in the sand hose to convey the abrasive.
Open the air throughput with the slide only to an extent at which the pulsing
stops; then the best sand conveying position is set.

7. The desired number of blasting cycles can be selected with the preselection
counter at the right side of the blasting cabinet.
8. An aluminous abrasive (Abrasit) with grain 20 (0.8...1.2 mm) shall be used for
blasting. Fill 50 kg of abrasive into the abrasive bin. Refill 2 kg of aluminous
abrasive after 3...4 rolls. The abrasive must be exchanged completely after
15...20 rolls.

Note:
The desired roll surface roughness depends on the duration of blasting, the blasting
pressure and the abrasive product used.
A good surface roughness is Ra = 2.5...3.5 ± 0,5 µm.

Caution!
The cabinet door must remain closed during the blasting process. The door is locked
with a safety switch. If the door is opened, the blasting operation is interrupted.

Danger!
It is absolutely necessary to wear eye protection while operating the roll
frosting system!

Roll frosting system Maintenance 6-1

6 Maintenance

Danger!
Perform all maintenance, cleaning and inspection work with the machine at
a standstill only (all machine movements have to be stopped).
The service or the local switch must be set to «0» and locked.

6.1 General information

The geared motor for the roll drive is lubricated with a long-lasting liquid grease
filling. The roll rollers have also undergone a lifetime lubrication.
The blasting nozzles and the blasting hoses are subject to wear; they must be
checked for wearing marks regularly and exchanged if necessary.
The approximate service life can be seen from the table below.

System component Estimated service life in

operating hours
Air nozzle 150
Boron carbide nozzle 500
Sand-blasting nozzle 200
Discharging mug 1200
Gun body 1200

6.2 Blasting guns

The sand-blasting guns must always be removed after ~ 100 operating hours, and
the sand and air nozzles must be checked for wear. For this purpose, it is sufficient
to screw off the large nylon cap nut.
Each blasting gun is equipped with a boron carbide sand-nozzle.
We recommend regularly turning the sand nozzles by 90° in order to prevent them
from wearing off on one side only (see Fig. 6.1).
The service life of the air nozzle can also be increased by turning it by 180° after it
is worn off to a significant degree.
