Shakespeare To Teach or Not To Teach?

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare should be taught in the ninth grade curriculum

because it’s still well known, how it has evolved over time, and their old english. William

Shakespeare was the creator of live action.

Romeo and Juliet is a very well known play by William Shakespeare. The article, “How

Shakespeare changed Everything” by Stephen Marche states, “Unlike most of Shakespeare’s

plays, it has never slipped out of fashion.” This was talking about Romeo and Juliet, how it has

been out for so long that everyone to this day still knows Romeo and Juliet. “Is the biggest hit of

all time.” The gives us an idea that Romeo and Juliet was greatest play he had ever created. After

its first performance the Quarto publication proclaimed that it was approved for Shakespeare to

continue what he enjoyed doing. “It hath been often (with great applause) plaid publiquely.” That

is how Romeo and Juliet became well known, it was approved to be public and and many people

loved watching it and it spreaded.

Since Romeo and Juliet are well known, there are other versions of Romeo and Juliet like

Baz Luhrmann’s modern versions of Romeo + Juliet or the Cuban cigars version, Romeo y

Julietta. This gives creativity or improving something to your aspect. In the article, “How

Shakespeare changed Everything” by Stephen Marche states, “Romeo and Juliet has been

adapted into other Media, into operas and ballads and musicals.” The proves that Romeo and

Juliet have evolved from the eighteenth century. In 2012 the Royal Shakespeare Company
3

wanted to have a competition for theater groups to make Romeo and Juliet more modern and the

person who wrote the article, ”On Love and War, Iraq Learns from Shakespeare” only one

performance caught the writer’s eye. The article, ”On Love and War, Iraq Learns from

Shakespeare” by Shelina Zahra Janmohamed states, “Of the many unique and creative

performances, Romeo and Juliet in Baghdad, performed by the Iraqi.” The person liked the

performance because it was creative, the were speaking their language and so they had subtitles

above the stage and it was how two of the characters, Romeo and Juliet fell in love but it was

during the war. That was very unique in my opinion. Baz Luhrmann was creative with his movie,

he wanted it to look more modern since the first movie of Romeo and Juliet was outdated. In the

article it states, “Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes became the dominant young actors of

their generation through their performances in Baz Luhrmann’s.” This is saying that they are

representing the film as their modern world but still using Shakespeare's storyline and the way

they talked a long time ago.

The way they talked is very unique and it was how they spoke in the 1500’s, but it’s

complex and hard for us to understand. Most modern kids don’t understand what they say when

reading Romeo and Juliet. For example : Romeo: If I profane with my unworthiest hand this

holy shrine, the gentle sin is this, my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that

rough touch with a tender kiss. Juliet: God pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much. If you

didn’t understand I’ll explain, Romeo was saying sorry for brushing his hand against her hand

and he wanted to make by giving her a kiss on the hand, but Juliet said it was okay that there is

no need for that. If you can’t understand what they’re saying, then reading the book would be

trick. Despite that, it’s a beautiful story to read even if a lot of the characters die. Shakespeare

wanted his stories to be rhyme, it was unique and is a history of the 1500’s. Also if you are
4

learning it at school, you have a teacher that will help the students understand the story and some

of the lines you can understand.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is very well known, has many other versions, and they

speak differently. Enjoyed making his plays, he should learn Romeo and Juliet in the ninth grade

curriculum to spread his name to more generations to come.
