Wat-er We Drinking?

By Juan Castaneda, Shane

Taylor, Nick Irish, and Brandon
Barrera
Effects of Unclean Water
● Over 3.4 million people die due to water related
diseases. (One of the leading cause of death around
the world)
Brainstorming
● New and original water filter?
● Improve existing design?
● At home use or outside?
Brita Water Filters
● Brita creates water filter products for a wide variety of
uses
● Decided to test/improve Brita design
Inside a Brita
● Beads that remove salts and metals
● Small filters at top and bottom to
remove particles and keep in beads
● Beads made of “ion exchange resin”
and activated carbon
How does it work?
● Activated carbon absorbs chemicals in the water
● Ion exchange resin replaces metal ions with safer ones
(sodium/potassium)
● Mesh filters keep small particulate out of the water
Brita Effectiveness Tests

Trial Salt (g) Water (mL) Salt Before (ppm) Salt After (ppm)

1 2.00 20 6330 389

2 2.00 20 6790 4500

3 2.00 20 7830 6330

Our Filter
● Theoretical
● Would also have activated carbon and “ion exchange
resin”
● More filters for particulate matter
● Iodine included to kill viruses and bacteria
How is it better?
● Brita water filters are made for in home use
● Our theoretical filter would be more useful in more
situations
