Group 4: Using Tableau prep

Leader: Becky O’Connor

Limitations
• Memory consumption
• Tableau Prep takes on a lot of processing memory
• It is an area Tableau are looking at improving in the future
• Tableau Conductor released in 2019.1 can help with scheduling and executing the
workflows so it’s less of a manual process
• Ability to bring other types of data types
• Example: spatial files still need to added in Desktop and not in Prep
• Multi-Table Storage Extract available in 2018.3 can help with reducing the
duplication of the data once it’s joined in Desktop
Positives
• Nice idea
• Once you’ve created the flow, it works!
• Great for prototyping – once the process is created, it’s easy to pick it up as you can see the
steps outlined
• It’s easy to find and explore the data after it has been processed
Additional Ideas
• Sampling
• Currently it’s not very clear what our sample will include
• The option to sample distinct values or get a more scientific approach would be
good
• When preparing or cleaning the data, sometimes the rows are not coming out in the
sample that is created
• Automatically fill rows below
• Being able to automatically fill in blank spaces or rows below instead of manually
having to prepare the data before opening it in Tableau Prep
