“Andrea burst out laughing” is an example of Kinesics that appeal to the viewers’
aural imagery and would provide a better understanding of the tension between the two
characters (tutor and student) in terms of their discussion about future careers.
“She left quickly” portrays Chronemics. It shows she used her time, which is effective
in portraying her embarrassment at not having a good command of English and knowing
that Andrea knew she could not produce Standard English in her efforts to speak Creole to
her.
In the extract entitled “Natasha” by A.M 1192, it deals with a primary school girl
called Natasha who, despite having a Creole background, surprises her tutor, Andrea, by
engaging with her in a discourse using fluent Standard English. Her teacher, Mrs. Jackson, is
also mentioned as having a dislike for Creole as she considers it to be an inferior and
unbecoming language. Important features for discussion of the extract include motivation
for acquiring Standard English, Justification for Natasha’s use of English and Attitude to
Creole and benefits of communication through a video presentation.
{Topic sentence} Justifications for Andrea’s surprise that Natasha spoke English
fluently exist. {Insert b)} Natasha’s mom only spoke Creole, and it was evident from the
passage that she can’t speak Standard English. Therefore, the language of her home/her
native language is Creole. “Especially from a child…Kingston” in Kingston, the
dominant/widely spoken language is Creole and to obtain fluency in Standard English they
would need far greater exposure which would lie beyond the current geographical location
in order to acquire it. That would make Andrea surprised that she spoke Standard English so
fluently. The fact that Natasha was a primary school student accounts for Andrea’s surprise
because one would not expect that a child at such a young age would have mastered
proficiency and competency in English when the full requirements of the curriculum would
not have yet been taught.
{Topic sentence} Mrs. Jackson’s behaviour coincides with her attitude to the use of
creole. {Insert c)} Her behaviours: “left quickly”, “had been insulted” and “she had tried to
speak properly” indicate a negative attitude to Creole where she sees it as inferior, thus
displays contempt for the language. Her feelings of inferiority or disdain is expressed when
she left quickly, which shows how embarrassed she was when she could not speak Standard
English. These are also feelings of insecurity as she looks at language as a representative of
her identity. If she perceives Creole as inferior, then by using it, she herself would be
inferior.

In conclusion, the extract focuses on certain areas of analysis such as motivation for
acquiring Standard English, Justification for Natasha’s use of English and Attitude to Creole
and benefits of communication through a video presentation. These all contributed to the
meaning and understanding of the extract.
