COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE CODE : E-TOXI 102

DESCRIPTIVE TITLE : ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY

COURSE DESCRIPTION : Environmental toxicology is the study of toxic

effects of environmental chemicals on living organisms
(including humans). In this course, the basic concepts,
methods, and approaches in environmental toxicology
will be introduced. Natural and synthetic chemicals
commonly encountered in the air, water, and soil will
be discussed regarding their occurrence, fate and
transport, and toxicological effects on ecological
species and humans. Case studies will be used to
illustrate the complexity of environmental toxicology
issues. New trends in chemical toxicity testing will be
discussed. Contaminants of emerging concerns such as
pharmaceutical and personal care products and
engineered nanomaterials will also be introduced.

COURSE CREDIT : 4 units ( 2 units lecture, 2 units laboratory)

CONTACT HOURS : 2 hours lecture and 3 hours laboratory

Total of 34 hours lecture and 51 hours laboratory per
semester

PREREQUISITES : None

PLACEMENT : 3rdt Year, First Semester

COURSE OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Critically evaluate and interpret scientific data, information, and lab results

2. Write and clearly present key aspects of fundamental toxicology and the discipline’s
relevancy to real-world issues

3. Utilize scientific literature and databases to identify information needed to

understand and effectively communicate aspects of toxicology

4. Master a broad set of [toxicology] knowledge concerning the fundamentals in the

basic areas of toxicology

5. Demonstrate an understanding of legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations

relating to toxicology within the broader societal context

6. Demonstrate an understanding of and the ability to apply the scientific method in

gaining technical expertise and lab skills

7. Demonstrate knowledge on the foundation of histology as well as inclusive methods

of determining various estimations of toxicity

8. Demonstrate events in toxicosis and compare approaches in the estimation of health

effects
