Validity and Reliability of Urdu Version of Beck's Depression Inventory

Among Students of Madaris (Islamic Institutes)

ABSTRACT

Depression among university students is common. In order to find depression in Madaris students Beck's depression inventory
translated in Urdu version. The aim of our study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of Urdu version of Beck's depression
inventory. This pilot study was conducted during October to December 2017. Data has been collected from 35 students of Jamia tur
Rasheed, Karachi. All 21 items of Beck's depression inventory achieved score of Cronbach's Alpha more than 0.75, which proves good
and acceptable consistency of Urdu version of Beck's depression inventory.

INTRODUCTION
Prevalence of mood depression is very high in Pakistan.1-2
According to WHO factsheet 25% of individual will suffer from
any type of mental disorder during their lifetime in developing
and developed countries. 3 Evidences suggest that university
students are at high risk of depression despite being a
advantaged population, in a systematic review of 24 articles,
prevalence among university students was found in the range of
10-85% with the weighted mean 30.6%. 4 In Pakistan, Islamic
universities which are commonly known as Madaris are
contributing their role in religious education. 5 Madaris in
Pakistan are mostly teaching subjects; Tafseer (Holy Quran
Interpretation), Hadith (Saying of Prophet Muhammad PBUH),
Fiqah (Islamic laws), Arabic language with some other subjects.6
Depression in medical, pharmacy and other faculties student is
always the area of interest of researcher, however, another
most important sector of education which is madrasah is
neglected despite this fact that they are more intermingle with
society and communities. Objective of this study is to evaluate
the validity and reliability of Beck's depression inventory 7 in
Urdu language version, which is easy for them to comprehend
and respond.

METHODOLOGY
A pilot study was conducted in Karachi from October to
December 2017. The data was collected by Urdu version of
Beck's Depression Inventory 7 from 35 Madaris Students of
different grades majorly from Jamia tur Rasheed. Beck's
Depression Inventory is well established questionnaire to
screen for depression and validated for non-psychiatric
patients8-9 and students.10-13 The questionnaire contains 21 items.
SPSS 20 version software was used to evaluate validity and
reliability of Urdu version of Beck's depression inventory by
determining Cronbach's Alpha.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION
Twenty questions (items) of Beck's depression inventory
achieved greater than 0.75 score of Cronbach's Alpha. Score of
Cronbach's Alpha of individual questions; 0.792 of question-1,
0.773 of question-2, 0.782 of question-3, 0.771 of question-4,
0.803 of question-5, 0.776 of question-6, 0.795 of question-7,
0.803 of quation-8, 0.798 of question-9, 0.806 of question-10,
0.813 of question-11, 0.800 of question-12, 0.779 of question-
13, 0.812 of question-14, 0.798 of question-15, 0.781 of
question-16, 0.796 of question-17, 0.793 of question-18, 0.786
of question-19, 0.786 of question-20 and 0.779 of question-21.
Reliability statistics of all 21 questions/items combined is 0.804.

The main objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the

magnitude of applicability of Urdu version of Beck's Depression
Inventory. 7 Achievement of Cronbach's Alpha score of all 21
items combined and individually shows that internal
consistency of Urdu version is good and acceptable.14
CONCLUSION
The translated Urdu version is valid and reliable to use for
Madaris students.
