Short Paper #5

Sociological Foundations

Learning truly is not limited to the four walls or corners of the classroom. It occurs not
only within the immediate environment of the learner, but also with all environment relative the
learner. It encompasses both internal and external factors which may directly or indirectly affect
the holistic growth and development of the learner.

As I started teaching at Cansilayan National High School, I came to realize a lot of

things, which I did not clearly paid attention to before. It did not really mattered to me whether a
parent or the entire community joins school activities or makes ways to help a learner with
his/her studies or not. As long as I see a learner manifest the learning through his scores or
behavior, it was all good. As I grew up to an urban community, I was used to preparing lessons
that would suit students from urban community. I did not mind looking at the new environment I
was on. I did not mind noting the great margin of difference right in front of me. I became so
frustrated with every low scores brought by the unrelatable lessons I kept on insisting them to
relate to. “If it’s far away, it’s news. But if it’s close at home, it’s sociology.” True to these
words, I should not have brought my Masskara Festival, Korean Culture and Social Media one-
liners fanatic heart to these rural folks.

All these time they had their own set of cultural heritage lurking at every shadows and
bright eyes. They may not have masks on during their festival parades, but they are proud to
share the weight of buckets filled with fishes and vegetables, the warmth of the earth as the strut
the streets barefooted every Tinabu-ay Festival. They don’t fall for Korean Acts, because they
have Donny “Ahas” Nietes and the Condez brothers for the near future. Our school offered all
activities that really highlighted the cultural heritage of the community. A sense of appreciation
and pride was instilled to the learner’s heart. Almost every parent beams proudly at one’s child
during parades. What was first just a drag of feet to the end of every parade for me has now
become a head on march.
