Anchor Standard 3: I can perform movements using the dance elements.

I can:
I can understand the meaning of a word and create a movement to demonstrate it.

Engagement:
I started working with my class every week to create movements for their vocabulary words to memorize their
meaning. We stood in a circle whole group and came up with movements together and practiced them
throughout the week to prepare them for the test. Getting everyone up and mimicking movements together
helps students get over moving in front of the class in a smaller group.

Planning/Instruction:
1. Grouping: Decide how you want to group students. I numbered students off to do it randomly and
shifted students if I needed to, but you could plan to do heterogeneous or homogenous groups or
whatever you think would be best for your students. Groups of 4 worked well for me because of the
number of vocabulary words.
2. Give students their vocabulary words (this can be for any subject!) I gave students 8 words to focus on.
3. In their groups, each student is in charge of 2 of the 8 words. They can pick what words they do when
they are in their group, or you can help groups decide. Each student needs to come up with a
movement for each of their words and teach it to the group.
4. Students combine all of their movements as a group to create a “dance.” I had the students repeat
each movement 4 times. It helped to see the movement a few times and try to interpret the word.
5. Before performing their dance in front of the class, I allowed them to practice to music a few times to
help them stay on beat and memorize the dance sequence.
6. When they finish, I had groups repeat the movement and the word slowly without music to see their

Extension:
As students are watching groups perform, they can write down the words in order of the dance
sequence to see if they guessed the right words with the movement. The performers can verify the order of
the words after they perform.

Assessment:
Formative: Checklist that students followed directions for the lesson and included all vocabulary words and
movements.
Summative: Vocabulary test over these specific words.
