Students’ Concern on Strict Teacher Discipline

Many Thai students are concerned on strict teacher discipline both foreign and Thai

teachers when the teacher in the classroom is more of that as a policeman than as a teacher

(Kuehn, 2018). However, there are three main reasons why teachers are so strict. Firstly

stressful, secondly demanding and lastly unappreciated of teaching (Corner, 2016). Mahidol

University International Demonstration School also has some strict and intimidating teachers.

MUIDS has very strict rules but some teachers take them too seriously. What are the

concerns of the students who face strict teachers? Students at MUIDS who face a strict

teacher have their concerns about many things such as teacher doesn't allow them to go to the

toilet, teacher gives detention to them in the very little problem and etc.

The purpose of this research report is to find out the concerns of the students in MUIDS

about the strict teachers’ discipline and to find out the solutions of the problems by referring

to the survey’s data. The importance is to bring awareness to the teacher so they improve

themselves. The author uses three academic articles from different sources to relate the

results and interpretation of the survey to other research studies.

The question asked what are the students’ concerns to the strict teacher in MUIDS. The

choices are Teacher doesn't allow them to go to the toilet, Teacher gives detention to you in

the very little problem, Teacher gives a punishment or hard assignment to you for your

mistake, Teacher doesn't listen to your excuses even though it is not your fault and Other. The

figure below shows that most students at MUIDS are concerned that ‘teacher will not listen to

any excuses even though it is not your fault’ is 33% of all the answers and followed by

teacher doesn’t allow you to go to the toilet, teacher gives a punishment or hard work

assigned to you for your mistake and the teacher gives detention to you in the very little

problem which is 27%, 25%, and 15% respectively. Many students at MUIDS are concerned

to be blamed without any mistakes from the strict teacher. This situation should be

considered by the schools and ask the teachers to listen to the students’ needs and

explanations.

Most of the teachers today can’t be just anyone but they need to have a degree and

complete a mentored student teaching internship before being allowed or able to teach

students but there are some people who don’t fit this occupation(Heik, 2019). Students are

not able to choose their teachers so they have to get used to the teachers and deal with

them(Riverson, 2018). It is a school’s duty to communicate with the students’ school and

classroom life. At MUIDS, the student has their own counselors to talk and counsel about

everything and it will be kept as a secret by having counselors in the school. They may

increase collaboration between one or more student services members to utilize resources

within the school and community(BEST COUNSELING DEGREE,2019). By sharing data

from the school counseling program, the team can work together to maximize the educational

and social benefits for student growth.

Figure 1 MUIDS students’ concerns to the strict teachers’ discipline

Most of the students at MUIDS are mainly concerned to be not listened by the strict

teachers. This research report concludes that having counselors in schools is very beneficial

especially to the students who are facing the problems. So student’s counselors play a big role

in making students get through their problems but the most important thing is not to get

themselves in the trouble.
