Introduction
This manual is intended for the installation contractor, design engineer, and facility
engineer, and gives a basic understanding of the enVerid HLR Module installation
process and requirements.
enVerid produces two classifications of HLR 1000E Modules. The enVerid HLR
1000E-M is an indoor unit. The enVerid HLR 1000E-R is an outdoor unit.
The HLR 1000E-M unit is an air treatment system that is installed on the exterior of
the building. These units are normally found on the roof near the building RTUs, but
they can be installed on grade if the air handling equipment is located at this level.
The HLR 1000E-M can be installed in most types of buildings, with the exception of
hospitals and laboratories. The unit, or units, can be connected to, and operate in
conjunction with, any HVAC system. The HLR 1000E-M can be operated in any
climate.
There are several reasons for a building to have the HLR 1000E-M installed. One of
those reasons is to reduce the amount of energy the building uses. Another is to
improve the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by cleaning carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon
monoxide (CO), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, ozone (O3), and
other inorganics from the building air that we breathe. In areas where the outside
air has a higher concentration of pollutants, such as major highways, airports,
downtown of major cities, the HLR Module helps keep the outdoor-generated
pollutants outdoors.
The HLR 1000E-M cleans a portion of the return air—approximately five to ten
percent— and returns it to the air-handling unit. The HLR Module removes the
contaminants through a process called adsorption. The cleaned air leaving the
HLR 1000E-M has a lower level of contaminants than the return air The HLR Module
operates in the adsorption mode when the building is occupied and the air-handler
is not in economizer mode. When the building’s air-handlers are in economizer
mode, or when the building is unoccupied, the HLR Module is placed into stand-by
mode.
The HLR 1000E-M periodically goes into a regeneration mode, where the sorbent
cartridges are heated to release the contaminants that were captured during the
adsorption mode. During the regeneration mode the HLR 1000E-M directs the
warmed, contaminated airstream to the outside. The HLR 1000E-M can do this
operation directly, or through an exhaust ductwork system that may also include a
booster fan to aid in expelling the exhaust airstream from the building. This
regeneration process normally occurs when the building is unoccupied. However,
due to the amount of loading, or the length of the occupancy period, the unit may

1

Version 1

go into regeneration while the building is occupied. In this case, the units are staged
so that they are in adsorption mode to reduce the amount of contaminates during
peak occupancy.
After the HLR 1000E-M has been installed, commissioned, and is in communication
with the enVerid Cloud, it requires very little interaction with the building staff for
day-to-day operation. Most maintenance tasks are required only on an annual basis.

Component Descriptions
• Sorbent Cartridge Bank: The sorbent cartridge bank houses 12 sorbent
cartridges that contain the sorbents used to capture contaminants (CO2, VOCs,
aldehydes, ozone, carbon monoxide, and other inorganic compounds) during
Adsorption Mode (air cleaning) and then released during Regeneration Mode
(internal heating and outside venting). The bank also allows the installation of a
secondary odor module.
• Heater: An integrated heater raises the internal temperature of the HLR 1000E-M
during the regeneration mode to initiate the release of the captured
contaminants. The first step in Regeneration Mode is Closed Loop Heating, when
all external dampers are closed, and air is recirculated inside to accelerate the
heating and contaminant release process. The second step is to vent
contaminants outside by opening the Outside Air and Exhaust dampers. The
HLR 1000E-M uses a PID control loop to keep the internal temperature
controlled during Regeneration Mode.
• Fans: Integrated DC brushless fans control airflow through the HLR 1000E-M
during the Adsorption and Regeneration cycles. Speed control and active
feedback from the fans verify proper operation.
• Electrical Enclosure: The electrical enclosure houses the direct digital control
(DDC) circuit board, stepdown transformer, control devices and sensor
terminations, and communications modules. The controller board intelligently
and automatically determines when to be in Adsorption Mode, Regeneration
Mode, or Idle Mode, based on all of the sensor data and advanced machine-
learning algorithms, or it can use a preset daily schedule for each mode. The
integrated power supply provides power to the system and protects the
HLR 1000E-M module from AC-related phase failures and voltage anomalies. The
communication modules include a BACnet daughtercard for integration with
Building Automation/Management Systems (BAS/BMS) and a wireless cellular
modem that connects to the wireless cellular antenna.
• Air Inlet with Sensors: This is connected to the return air duct or plenum and is
where indoor air enters the HLR 1000E-M to be cleaned of contaminants. Inside
this inlet is located the inlet air sensors that measure the inlet air temperature,
humidity, and CO2. In some cases an externally mounted VOC sensor may be
installed.

8
HLR 1000E-M Unit Overview
Component Descriptions

• Clean Air Outlet with Sensor: This is connected to the return air duct
(downstream from the Indoor Air Inlet connection) or plenum (should be near
the airflow inlet to the air handling unit) and is where the cleaned air re-enters
the return air path. Inside this airflow are sensors that measure the temperature,
humidity, and CO2. This CO2 reading is used by the HLR 1000E-M module’s
software to determine when the sorbents are saturated and need to be
regenerated (unless the HLR 1000E-M module is using a preset schedule for
Regeneration).
• Regeneration Air Inlet: This inlet brings in air for flushing contaminants out of
the HLR 1000E-M during Regeneration Mode. Normally this is supplied from the
mechanical room, space, return air, or outside air (depending on location and
the outside air temperature).
• Exhaust Outlet: This outlet is for the HLR 1000E-M module to release the
contaminants outside the building during Regeneration Mode. It is typically
ducted to the building exhaust, or can be ducted directly to the building exterior.
• Internal Damper: The internal damper is opened during Regeneration Mode
and is used to recirculate the heated air inside the unit to maintain the 130 °F to
150 °F temperature required for regeneration of the sorbents.
• Cartridge Temperature Sensor: The cartridge temperature sensor is used
during Regeneration Mode to closely control the temperature of the cartridges to
ensure optimal release of the captured contaminants.
• Main Power Junction: This area is where external connections enter the
HLR 1000E-M. These connections include AC power, external sensor connections,
and external control connections. Consult the construction documents to
determine which of these connections were installed.
• Construction: Galvanized steel construction with powder-coated paint. The
inside walls of the HLR 1000E-M unit are covered in heat-reflective insulation
material for improved energy efficiency and soundproofing.
• Inlet Particulate Filter: 1" pleated MERV-7 filter to remove particulates coming
in from the Outside Air Inlet.
• Wireless Cellular Antenna: Provides the connection to the enVerid Cloud and is
mounted on the outside of the unit in the field.
• Differential Pressure Sensors: The differential pressure sensors measure the
pressure drop across the sorbent cartridge bank.
• Actuator: The actuator controls the opening and closing of the damper. Each
damper has an actuator.

Installation

Installation Requirements
Prior to installation, review the drawings issued for construction, any bulletins or
addenda received, and requests for information responses pertaining to the
installation of the HLR 1000E-M units. Ensure that the units are installed in
accordance with the approved coordination drawings and that the proper service
and maintenance clearances are maintained.
The location of the HLR 1000E-M is determined by the installation criteria discussed
in the HLR Design Manual. Some of the considerations are:
• Unit geometry
• Clearances in the mechanical room
• Proximity to the return air duct or exhaust ductwork
• The HLR 1000E-M can be set on the floor in a vertical position (outlets on top of
the unit and the inlets on the side), or a horizontally position (inlets on the top
and outlets on the side).
• The unit should be mounted on neoprene vibration isolation pads
• Ductwork should be connected to the HLR 1000E-M via flexible duct connectors
to isolate the unit from any vibrations transmitted through the system ductwork.
• Ensure that the HLR Unit has power coming from the correct source (208V or
277V single phase)
• Provide a disconnect switch that can be locked in the off position, and which
provides GFCI protection.
If the location for the HLR 1000E-M does not appear to be suitable, request
clarification from the design team or the enVerid project manager.
Prior to setting the HLR 1000E-M units in the mechanical room verify from the
contract documents that the a housekeeping pad is not required.
For additional support required during installation or operation, contact enVerid
technical support at 617-612-4055.

Version 1

Once the HLR 1000E-M has been set in place, the unit is ready to be connected into
the air-handling equipment, including controls and building power.

Ductwork Connections
The adsorption in and cleaned air out ductwork is 14" in diameter. Both ducts
should be connected to the appropriate air handling unit’s return air ductwork. The
ductwork should be separated by the amount shown on contract drawings or in the
HLR Design Manual. The HLR 1000E-M modules can be installed as single module, or
in a cluster (multiple modules connected by common ductwork and acting as a
single module).
The ductwork should be separated by three (3) or more duct diameters. If
rectangular ducts are being used, convert to the equivalent diameter.
The ductwork should be supported from the building structure. The ductwork that
serves the HLR 1000E-M module or cluster can be supported off of the same
supports. However, the electrical conduit for the HLR 1000E-M module(s) must be
supported off of its own supports, i.e. the electrical conduits cannot be supported
off of the supports for the ductwork. Neither the ductwork nor the electrical
conduits can be supported off of any existing supports or another trades supports.
A flexible connector should be installed between the ductwork and the
HLR 1000E-M. The connector isolates the HLR 1000E-M from the ductwork and
minimizes the use of the unit’s duct connectors to support the ductwork.

Note: The unit’s duct connections should not be used to support the weight
of the units. Ensure that the units are vibrationally isolated from the
building by the use of flexible duct connectors.

Caution: Attach ductwork as shown in HLR 1000E-M Duct Connections (page 15).

Improper installation can cause damage to the damper gasket and the
damper actuator, and can limit or restrict the operation of the damper
itself.

Caution: Volume/Balancing dampers should be installed a minimum of 6" from

the edge of the HLR Module duct collars. This will alow for operation of
the dampers without interfering with the volume/balancing damper.

A Clean Air Outlet: The port may or may not be connected to ductwork. If the
module/cluster is installed in a plenum then this port may not have ductwork
connected to it. If the module/cluster is connected to the Return Air ductwork
then the ductwork will be routed back to the Return Air ductwork and
connected downstream (closer to the AHU or Return Air fan) from the Air Inlet
ductwork.
B Exhaust Air: Ducted to an exhaust system, such as an exhaust fan, louver, or
exhaust duct. . A field mounted booster fan maybe installed to aid the exhaust
air stream to reach the buildings exterior. This ductwork should be insulated to
maintain the surface temperature of the insulation at or below 120 °F.
C Air Inlet: Air inlet ducted from the AHU's Return Air stream. This port is not
used in a plenum.
D Regeneration Air/Air Inlet: This port may not be connected to any ductwork.
The Regeneration Air comes from the surrounding space/mechanical
room/plenum. If this is a plenum mounted installation the air to be cleaned
comes from this port/connections as well.
Connect the ductwork with three screws as seen in the figure below.

biaxial-oriented barrier film with a permeance at 0.01 perm (ASTM E 96/E 96 M)
and with a flame spread of 5 and a smoke develop index of 25 (ASTM E 84)

Unit Power
The electrical contractor shall review the contract documents, and verify the
requirements for all wire, cable, raceways, and pull boxes. All wiring should be
installed in rigid galvanized steel conduit sized in accordance with the local electric
code (NEC with local amendments).
All conductors installed to supply power to the HLR 1000E-M should be sized in
accordance with the contract documents and local electric code. All wiring should
be color coded in accordance with the electrical code. The wiring should include the
required number of phase conductors, neutral, and full size insulated (green)
ground conductor.
Each HLR 1000E-M has a connection point for the branch conduit on the top right
rear corner of the unit. The unit should be connected to the branch conduit via a
flexible connector. See the contract documents, and local electrical code for length
limitations. Coordinate the location of the power conduit, and the final location of
the HLR 1000E-M with the mechanical contractor and general contractor.
