Advantages and disadvantages of teaching children

“Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression”- Dr. Haim
Ginott. And becoming a teacher of little children is a task chosen by many, although it is
not simple but one of the most gratifying jobs.

One of the main advantages of teaching children is that teachers are able to experience
the joy of watching their students learn how to do things for the first time since they are
very young and many things are new to them. Moreover, by spending every day with
children, teachers are able to work on their own communication skills. It is a mutual
benefit between both parts because the teacher learns from the student and vice versa.
And last but not least, you can help children to learn in new ways since you have to apply
different methods to cater for the different learning styles that they may have and this is
very important in a teacher’s daily routine because it is not a job where the process is
every day the same one.

However teaching children can also imply some drawbacks. To being with, it is a physically
exhausting job due to the fact that teachers are all the time on their feet. Also, they
usually have to bend down to talk to their little students. In addition to this, pre-school is
the time where a child’s special needs are noticed and learning disabilities must be
identified and addressed quickly so the child does not fall too far behind the rest of the
class. These circumstances can disrupt your class and require extra attention. Finally, it is a
stressful job on account of the responsibility that takes taking care of little children, they
have to feel safe with you, trust you and feel comfortable when you talk to them.

To conclude, this profession has a lot of advantages, although it has many disadvantages
too. It is a satisfying and never boring job but it is not for everyone. If you decide to
become a teacher of little kids, you must be patient, have an engaging but strong
personality and be able to develop a strong rapport with your students.
