 FOREWORD

MSME-DI, Chennai, Tamil Nadu is one of the field outfit of Office of

Development Commissioner, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (DC-
MSME) established in the year 1954 for implementing the various policies and
programes of Ministry of MSME towards entrepreneurship development in Micro,
Small and Medium Enterprises across the State in liaison with State Govt. and other
stake holders. This Institute covers 32 Districts in the State of Tamil Nadu and UT of
Puducherry. with the following mandate

For Aspiring entrepreneurs : identify, motivate, train, handhold and

provide mentoring services.

For Existing entrepreneurs. To provide techno economic
consultancy and facilitation service

Skill Development: To impart need based skill training through
Skill Development Programmes (SDP)

One of the vide spectrum of value added services of the Institute is to prepare
a brief district industrial profiles of each district for the benefit of aspiring and existing
entrepreneurs in the State of Tamil Nadu and other States

This report contains brief details of the District, geographical information,

statistical data relating to MSME’s of the district, registration under Udyog Aadhaar
Memoramdum (UAM), potential areas for investment in service sector and
manufacturing sector, identified industrial clusters, key contacts for whom to contact for
what etc. . The report has been prepared based on our earlier first edition report duly
updated from data/inputs collected by District nodal officers and from
reports/publications of M/o. MSME, Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamil Nadu, MSME
Deptt.

Economic Investigation Division of the Institute has taken special efforts in

collection and compilation of the relevant data for preparing the document not only for
the KANCHEEPURAM District but for all the Districts of Tamil Nadu. My sincere
thanks to all the officers of the Institute for their cooperation in bringing out this brief
industrial profile.

I am sure that that this document will be of much useful for the benefit of
aspiring and existing entrepreneurs who are desirous of setting up of MSMEs in the
State of Tamil Nadu in general and in the District of KANCHEEPURAM in particular.

 Brief Industrial Profile of Kancheepuram District

1. General Characteristics of the District

Kancheepuram district was initially known as Chengalpattu District. It was

bifurcated on 18-11-1997 into Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts.
Kancheepuram town, known as city of thousand temples, is the headquarters of the
District. It is situated at a distance of 76 kms from Chennai and well connected by
road and rail.

Kancheepuram was the historical capital of Pallavas, having magnificent temples

and unique architectural beauty that bears testimony to its ancient glorious of Dravidian
heritage. It is also known for its richest silk. Mamallapuram, Uthiramelur and
Sriperumpudur are some of the other historical places in the district.

The district is also known for the numerous electronic and software units in
the IT corridor, Giant car manufactures like ford, Hyundai, BMW and Nissan,
Telecommunication multinationals like Nokia and Flextronics and the famous glass
manufacturer Saint Gobain Glass.

1.1 Location and Geographical Area:

The district is situated on the Northern side of east coast of Tamilnadu. It is

bounded on the east by Bay of Bengal, Chennai City and Thiruvallur District on the
north, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai Districts on the west and Villupuram District and
Union territory of Puducherry on the south.

It lies between 11° 00' to 12° 00’ North latitudes and 77° 28' to 78° 50' East
longitudes. The district has a total geographical area of 4433 Sq. Kms and coastline
of 87.2 Kms.

1.2 Topography

The district has normal weather during winter but very hot in the summer.
Rainfall depends mainly on the North East Monsoon. River Palar is the main river in
the district, which is not perennial. Cheyyar and Vegavathy rivers are tributaries of
Palar and join it at Thirumakkudal.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.

Granite, stone quarry, Sand quarry, silica sand and clay are the
minerals available in Kancheepuram district.

1.4 Forest

The district has a reserved forest of 23855.84 Hectares. Cashew is the only major
forest produce. Total out-turn cashew in 2010-11 was 5.282 Tonnes.

1.5 Administrative set up.

The district has been divided into 3 revenue divisions comprising of

10 taluks with 1214 revenue villages. For development reasons, it is divided into 13
development blocks with 10 municipalities, 24 town panchayats, 13 Panchayat
unions and 648 village panchayats.

2.1 Brief scenario

The District is divided into three revenue divisions comprising of 8 taluks, 13
blocks, 648 village panchayats and 1214 revenue villages.

Kanchipuram District known for its paddy and pulse cultivation. There is a good
scope for the industry that is willing to manufacture energy food for all age
groups and rice mills. (Rice mill - identified as Dynamic cluster)

Traditional industries like handlooms, silk weaving and rice milling are
concentrated in Kanchipuram block. In fact the silk industry cluster at
Kanchipuram block and the rice milling cluster at Madurantakam block point to
the importance of these industries in the District?s economy.

The bovine population is high in the District and therefore, the Meat gravy
concentrate industry having bright future here.

The District has achieved self sufficiency in the milk production and the surplus
milk can be used to produce dairy products

The fruit-based nutritious beverages are gaining popularity and are in good
demand in urban areas. There is good scope for the units like mango pickles,
Soft drinks, Chocolates and Chutneys

There is a good demand for dried fish, fish meal, dried shrimp, canned shrimp
and frozen shrimp in domestic as well as export market. There is good scope for
exporting these products to countries like Spain, Japan, Australia, Italy, Belgium,
Hongkong, U.K. U.S.A. Lanka, Saudi Arabia France etc.

Biofertilizers is one of the natural fertilizers, which is nitrogenous matter, which is
immensely required for the growth of agricultural plant by virtue of their multifold

 superiority in soil replenishment with minerals essential nutrients of the plant
tissue. The future demand of biofertilizers, is increasing at a tremendous pace,
which necessitates the inclusion of the more unit to be established.

Vermicultureconverts organic waste into resource. Vermiculture can be used to
process the residual waste of agricultural products. In recent years, the demand
for this is very good in the Districts like, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur

There are large scale units have come up recently in the District. These large-
scale units provide good scope for the two and four wheeler service stations and
few mechanical units have good future in the District itself.

The Rain Water Harvesting Structures with public participation has begun to
show results. The important rivers in the District are Palar, Cheyyar and
Vegavathi. Maduranthagam, Thenneri, Damal, Kolavai Sriperumpudhur,
Uthiramerur, Pillaipakkam and Sembaranmpakkam are the few lakes in the
Distric

The District leads in the production of fruits Vegetables and flowers in the State.
The major horticultural crops are Mango and Cashew Banana. It has been
proposed to set up a Mini Flower Auction Centre at Pallikaranai near Chennai
Airport at a cost of Rs.15.00 crores to cater to the needs of flower growers to
market their produce both in domestic and international markets

Kattankulathur, St. Thomas Mount, Kundrathur and Walajabad are the blocks
where the potentials can be exploited by undertaking agro/food processing
activities

The Kanchipuram District is rich in fish resources. Potential for exploitation of
marine fisheries in the District is high with the coastal line of 87.2 Km.

The District has two large scale car production units with foreign collaboration at
Sriperumbudur (HYUNDAI) and at Maraimalainagar (FORD) and the giant glass-
manufacturing unit of Saint Gobain Glass factory near Sriperumbudur providing
employment to many people, besides number of ancillary units.

The dispersal of SSI units reveals that the concentration of SSI units is in St.
Thomas Mount, Kanchipuram and Kattankulathur Blocks

The major Khadi Industries include Cotton and Polyester khadhi, Silk and
woolen units are in Kanchipuram District. More than 5,000 families are engaged
in silk industry and their spectacular creations are marketed by a number of co-
operative societies

Indian Bank is the lead bank in the District

The District has Four Universities, 30 Arts and Science colleges, two Medical
College, 56 colleges for professional education. There are 1863 schools and 15
Institutes offering other professional education

Kanchipuram District is serving by 33 railway stations and 233 Kms. of the total
route length, shared by broad gauge (139 Kms) and meter gauge (94 Kms).

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has developed comprehensive
technology for industrial operations in fuel reprocessing and waste management.

The range of activities promoted by the Industrial Estates are vast - while Dr.
Vikram Sarabai Estate at Thiruvanmiyur houses electronic industries, the Alathur
Industrial Estate houses pharmaceutical industries and the Thirumidivakkam
industrial estate houses leather products and finished leather

A considerable number of granite polishing units are concentrated in
Echambakkam, Sembarambakkam, Chenglepattu and Madurantakam areas.

Under the control of Industries department 8 cooperative societies are
functioning and the Irula cooperative society has unique feature (Snake-
antivenium production centre).

The District provides enough scope for the development and growth of industries
engaged in Textiles Garments, Leather Products, Granites, Silk Alloy castings,
Machine Tools and Automobile products

Kanchipuram is a world-renowned silk city. Silk weaving in the handloom sector
is clustered in and around Kanchipuram, which is famous for silk sarees.
Kanchipuram's exquisite silk sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk in
contrasting colours and have an enviable reputation for texture, lustre, durability
and finish.The District has well developed silk and handloom weaving industries
in the co-operative sector.

3.7 Growth Trend

Kancheepuram district is one of the industrially fastest growing districts in the
state of Tamilnadu.

1. The electronic and software industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in
the district. Special industrial parks for software industries assisted the
growth of this sector. Software industry in the district grows at over 40-
50%.
2. Auto components and automobile industry grows at 15-20%. The recent
development in this sector has created a strong base for engineering
industry. Major car manufacturers located in the district like Ford, Hyundai,
Nissan and BMW have spurred the development of auto component and

5.UDYOG AADHAAR MEMORANDUM (UAM)

Govt. of India, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) has

notified the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum(UAM) under the MSMED Act, 2006 vide
gazette notification [SO No. 2576(E)] dated 18-09-2015 in order to promote ease of
doing business for MSMEs. A one-page simple registration form for online filing of UAM
has been introduced which replaces the filing of Entrepreneur’s Memorandum Part I &
II. The filing of UAM can be done on www.udyogaadhaar.gov.in .Registration is online
and user-friendly. UAM can be filed on self-declaration basis. No documentation
required. No Fee for filing. Can file more than one Udyog Aadhaar with same Aadhaar
Number. EM-I has been abolished. Need not file through Udyog Aadhaar. Udyog
Aadhaar (UA) is for running units. No need to apply for upcoming units.
