One of the vide spectrum of value added services of the Institute is to prepare
a brief district industrial profiles of each district for the benefit of aspiring and existing
entrepreneurs in the State of Tamil Nadu and other States
I am sure that that this document will be of much useful for the benefit of
aspiring and existing entrepreneurs who are desirous of setting up of MSMEs in the
State of Tamil Nadu in general and in the District of KANCHEEPURAM in particular.

Brief Industrial Profile of Kancheepuram District
The district is also known for the numerous electronic and software units in
the IT corridor, Giant car manufactures like ford, Hyundai, BMW and Nissan,
Telecommunication multinationals like Nokia and Flextronics and the famous glass
manufacturer Saint Gobain Glass.
It lies between 11° 00' to 12° 00’ North latitudes and 77° 28' to 78° 50' East
longitudes. The district has a total geographical area of 4433 Sq. Kms and coastline
of 87.2 Kms.
1.2 Topography
The district has normal weather during winter but very hot in the summer.
Rainfall depends mainly on the North East Monsoon. River Palar is the main river in
the district, which is not perennial. Cheyyar and Vegavathy rivers are tributaries of
Palar and join it at Thirumakkudal.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.
Granite, stone quarry, Sand quarry, silica sand and clay are the
minerals available in Kancheepuram district.
1.4 Forest
The district has a reserved forest of 23855.84 Hectares. Cashew is the only major
forest produce. Total out-turn cashew in 2010-11 was 5.282 Tonnes.

superiority in soil replenishment with minerals essential nutrients of the plant
tissue. The future demand of biofertilizers, is increasing at a tremendous pace,
which necessitates the inclusion of the more unit to be established.
Vermicultureconverts organic waste into resource. Vermiculture can be used to
process the residual waste of agricultural products. In recent years, the demand
for this is very good in the Districts like, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur
There are large scale units have come up recently in the District. These large-
scale units provide good scope for the two and four wheeler service stations and
few mechanical units have good future in the District itself.
The Rain Water Harvesting Structures with public participation has begun to
show results. The important rivers in the District are Palar, Cheyyar and
Vegavathi. Maduranthagam, Thenneri, Damal, Kolavai Sriperumpudhur,
Uthiramerur, Pillaipakkam and Sembaranmpakkam are the few lakes in the
Distric
The District leads in the production of fruits Vegetables and flowers in the State.
The major horticultural crops are Mango and Cashew Banana. It has been
proposed to set up a Mini Flower Auction Centre at Pallikaranai near Chennai
Airport at a cost of Rs.15.00 crores to cater to the needs of flower growers to
market their produce both in domestic and international markets
Kattankulathur, St. Thomas Mount, Kundrathur and Walajabad are the blocks
where the potentials can be exploited by undertaking agro/food processing
activities
The Kanchipuram District is rich in fish resources. Potential for exploitation of
marine fisheries in the District is high with the coastal line of 87.2 Km.
The District has two large scale car production units with foreign collaboration at
Sriperumbudur (HYUNDAI) and at Maraimalainagar (FORD) and the giant glass-
manufacturing unit of Saint Gobain Glass factory near Sriperumbudur providing
employment to many people, besides number of ancillary units.
The dispersal of SSI units reveals that the concentration of SSI units is in St.
Thomas Mount, Kanchipuram and Kattankulathur Blocks
The major Khadi Industries include Cotton and Polyester khadhi, Silk and
woolen units are in Kanchipuram District. More than 5,000 families are engaged
in silk industry and their spectacular creations are marketed by a number of co-
operative societies
Indian Bank is the lead bank in the District
The District has Four Universities, 30 Arts and Science colleges, two Medical
College, 56 colleges for professional education. There are 1863 schools and 15
Institutes offering other professional education
Kanchipuram District is serving by 33 railway stations and 233 Kms. of the total
route length, shared by broad gauge (139 Kms) and meter gauge (94 Kms).
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has developed comprehensive
technology for industrial operations in fuel reprocessing and waste management.
The range of activities promoted by the Industrial Estates are vast - while Dr.
Vikram Sarabai Estate at Thiruvanmiyur houses electronic industries, the Alathur
Industrial Estate houses pharmaceutical industries and the Thirumidivakkam
industrial estate houses leather products and finished leather

A considerable number of granite polishing units are concentrated in
Echambakkam, Sembarambakkam, Chenglepattu and Madurantakam areas.
Under the control of Industries department 8 cooperative societies are
functioning and the Irula cooperative society has unique feature (Snake-
antivenium production centre).
The District provides enough scope for the development and growth of industries
engaged in Textiles Garments, Leather Products, Granites, Silk Alloy castings,
Machine Tools and Automobile products
Kanchipuram is a world-renowned silk city. Silk weaving in the handloom sector
is clustered in and around Kanchipuram, which is famous for silk sarees.
Kanchipuram's exquisite silk sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk in
contrasting colours and have an enviable reputation for texture, lustre, durability
and finish.The District has well developed silk and handloom weaving industries
in the co-operative sector.

1. The electronic and software industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in
the district. Special industrial parks for software industries assisted the
growth of this sector. Software industry in the district grows at over 40-
50%.
2. Auto components and automobile industry grows at 15-20%. The recent
development in this sector has created a strong base for engineering
industry. Major car manufacturers located in the district like Ford, Hyundai,
Nissan and BMW have spurred the development of auto component and
engineering sectors, which have seen a growth trend of over 15 %.
3. Garment industry has faced a slight set back but at present picket up growth
momentum.
4. The sound agro base in the district has helped in the development of rice
milling and Oil extraction units.
5. Its bovine population helped in the growth of dairy and dairy products. In fact
Kancheepuram district has attained self-sufficiency in milk availability and
started supplying to nearby districts also.
6. The growth of traditional industries has also assisted in export of traditional
items like silk sarees/products.
7. Leather & Leather products grow at 10%.
