To understand the significance of DC over AC transmission system, types and

application of HVDC links in practical power systems.
To study the different n-pulse converter bridges and also to analyze the effect of

source impedance on the performance of the converters of the HVDC link.
To Understand the various control strategies to be adopted for the different modes of

operation of the converters of a HVDC transmission line.
To study about the mis-operation of the converters and also the various harmonics in

a HVDC system and their mitigation methods.
To calculate the power flow in a DC link and feeder system of simultaneous AC-DC
CO5 transmission, and to select protective devices in the HVDC system for protection of
the line against faults, surge voltages and surge currents.

GENERAL ASPECTS: Historical development of HVAC and HVDC system. HVDC system
configuration and components- comparison – Economic technical performance – Reliability –
Limitations. (6)

CONVERTER CIRCUITS AND ANALYSIS: Introduction to single phase and three phase converters.
Converters for HVDC system – 6 pulse converter and 12 pulse converter (both LCC and VSC types).
Analysis of 6 pulse converter with and without source impedance. – With overlap less than 60 degrees -
With overlap greater than 60 degrees - Complete characteristics of HVDC converter –rectifier mode and
Inverter mode of operation- equivalent circuits. (10)

CONTROL: Basic means of control – Power reversal – constant current versus constant voltage control
characteristics-desired features of control. Ideal and actual steady state characteristics and combined
rectifier and inverter characteristics. –Constant minimum delay angle control, constant current control,
constant extinction angle control and tap changer control. (8)
MISOPERATION OF CONVERTERS AND HARMONICS: Introduction to converter disturbance-
causes and effects– By pass action in bridges -Commutation failure. Characteristic and un –
characteristic harmonics – Troubles due to harmonics – Means of reducing harmonics. Need for reactive
power – sources of VAr. (6)

POWER FLOW ANALYSIS IN AC/DC SYSTEMS : Modelling of DC links – DC network – DC


converter – controller equations – solutions of DC load flow . Solution of AC-DC power flow. (6)

PROTECTION: Basics of protection – DC reactors – voltage and current oscillations – Clearing line
faults and re-energising – Circuit breakers – over voltage protection – Control of di/dt and dv/dt.-
Introduction to multi terminal HVDC system. (6)
