einant formaliosios struktūros semantizavimo keliu, šiame kontekste leidžia
pateikti vieną iš daugybės galimų sprendimų atsakant į muzikologo Josepho
Kermano klausimą, „kaip ištrūkti iš muzikos analizės“2.
Objektas
ir interpretacijas formuojantys skaitymo parametrai);
• polifoninio mąstymo raiška poezijoje (gvildenamos daugiabalsiškumo,
imitacinės technikos analogijų poezijoje prielaidos bei jų apraiškos
poetiniame tekste; pateikiami daugiabalsiškumo poetiniuose tekstuose
realizavimo pavyzdžiai);
• daugiasluoksnė analogijų sąranga (tyrinėjami pakartojimu grindžiamų
muzikos formų analogai ir jų koegzistencijos poetiniame tekste aspektai;
pavyzdžiais iliustruojami eilėraščio skaitymo kodai);
2
Turimas omenyje vieno žymiausių XX a.
R. Goštautienė, „Naujoji muzikologija ir kultūriniai muzikos tyrimai“ in Muzika
kaip kultūros tekstas, p. 9–12.

• sonatos formos ir jos atmainų poetiniuose tekstuose kontūrai (nagrinėjami
sonatinės logikos plėtotės ypatumai bei funkciniai dalių santykiai; patei
kiami sonatos formos analogijų interpretacijos pavyzdžiai).
7
• atskleisti daugiasluoksnės eilėraščio sąrangos komponentus ir parodyti
jų apraiškas eilėraščių interpretacijose;
sprendimų galimybes;

Siekiant atskleisti muzikos komponavimo principų analogijas XX a. lietuvių
poezijoje, disertacijoje išsamiai analizuojami šie eilėraščiai: Alfonso Nykos-Ni
liūno „Vasaros simfonija“, „Cante jondo“ (Nyka-Niliūnas 1996), Nijolės Miliaus
kaitės „sapne siuvau juodą suknią...“, „Svečias“, „namai...“ (Miliauskaitė 1999),

1994), Jono Aisčio „Apie rudenį ir šunį“, „Ratelis“ (Aistis 1991), Algimanto
Mackaus „Augintiniai“, „Mirtiškoji“ (Mackus 1999), Vytauto Bložės „Vaistinė“
(Bložė 1990), Rimanto Kmitos „Po spindinčiu kupolu“ (Kmita 2009).
Disertacijos struktūra
Disertacijos struktūrą sudaro įvadas, keturios dalys, išvados, šaltiniai ir literatū
ra, priedas. Įvade pagrindžiama disertacijos tema ir objektas, išdėstomi tikslai ir
uždaviniai, nurodomi tyrimo metodai, nusakomi disertacijos naujumas ir ori
ginalumas. Pirmojoje dalyje aptariami muzikinės, poetinės bei kalbinės raiškos
sankirtų aspektai. Pirmajame dalies skyriuje aktualizuojame keletą ryškesnių
XX amžiuje susiklosčiusių poezijos ir muzikos giminystės pavyzdžių, kurie
iliustruoja tam tikras poetinio teksto muzikos komponavimo principų, struk
tūrinės bei semantinės sąrangos principų bendrumo apraiškas. Antrajame sky
riuje gvildenamos poezijos muzikalumo galimybės universalijų ir struktūrinių
koordinačių požiūriu. Nusakomi pagrindiniai meno formos principai ir dėsniai,
pateikiamos universaliosios suvokimo schemos, atliepiančios universaliuosius
formų struktūravimo principus. Aptariami svarbesni muzikos kalbos ir verba
linės kalbos sankirtų aspektai, kitaip tariant, disertacijoje siekiama pateisinti
muzikos kalbos įsikišimą į kalbos gramatikos ir bendrųjų poezijos dėsnių sritį,
ieškoma bendrųjų vardiklių, leidžiančių sutapatinti abi kalbas ir šių santapų bei
analogijų kodus įžvelgti eilėraštyje. Taip pat „pagalbos ieškoma“ kognityvinės
10
psichologijos, lingvistikos mokslo baruose. Trečiajame pirmos dalies skyriuje
atskleidžiamos teksto analizės ir interpretacijos strategijos, kurios aktualizuo
jamos tolesnėse darbo dalyse, išskiriami disertacijoje pateikiamų eilėraščių
analizes ir interpretacijas formuojantys (formalusis skaidymo ir montavimo,
motyvinės plėtotės, tonacinis, retroaktyvaus skaitymo, intertekstualumo ir kt.)
skaitymo parametrai. Antrojoje dalyje aktualizuojama polifoninio mąstymo
raiškos poezijoje problematika. Siekiant atskleisti muzikos daugiabalsiškumo
lietuvių poezijoje apraiškas, suprobleminami tiek polifoninių komponavimo
principų, tiek polifoninės formos lygmenys bei klausimai. Pasitelkiant Juditos
Vaičiūnaitės, Nijolės Miliauskaitės, Sigito Gedos poetinius tekstus tyrinėjamos
daugiabalsiškumo, pedalo, ostinato, imitacinės technikos, fugos komponavimo
principų analogijų galimybės. Trečiojoje dalyje gilinamasi į daugiasluoksnę
eilėraščio sąrangą muzikos komponavimo technikų bei formų koegzistencijos,
žanrų implikacijos, technikų samplaikos požiūriu. Konkrečiomis Jono Aisčio,
Algimanto Mackaus, Alfonso Nykos-Niliūno, Juditos Vaičiūnaitės eilėraščių
interpretacijomis atskleidžiami įvairialypiai ir įvairiaaspekčiai eilėraščio,
kurio struktūroje išryškėja pakartojimo principų analogijos, skaitymo kodai.
Ketvirtojoje dalyje susitelkiama į sonatos formos ir jos atmainų poetiniuose
tekstuose problematiką. Aktualizuojami sonatinės logikos plėtotės ypatumai
bei funkciniai formos dalių santykiai. Nusakytos sonatos komponavimo tech
nikos, struktūrinių principų, formos procesiškumo ypatybės bei tokių analogijų
radimosi poetiniuose tekstuose galimybės sukonkretinamos pasitelkus Vytauto
Bložės, Juditos Vaičiūnaitės, Rimanto Kmitos, Nijolės Miliauskaitės eilėraščius.
Siekiant išryškinti interpretuojamų eilėraščių struktūravimo aspektus, darbo
autorė disertacijoje pateikiamų eilėraščių tekstus spalvina, ryškina, struktū
ruoja ir tarsi suasmenina, todėl šių eilėraščių originalios versijos pateikiamos
disertacijos priede.

muzika; 3) muzika literatūroje, t. y. „žodinė muzika“, verbalinė muzika bei
formos ir struktūros paralelės ir analogijos. Iš principo panaši klasifikacija
nurodoma ir Wernerio Wolfo veikale „The Musicalization of Fiction: A Study
in the Theory and History of Intermediality“ (1999) kaip intermedialumo
koncepcija. Muzikos ir literatūros sąveikų formos W. Wolfo klasifikuojamos į:
1) atvirąsias/tiesiogines: muzika ir literatūra, t. y. vokalinė muzika; 2) uždarąsias/
netiesiogines: literatūra muzikoje, t. y. programinė muzika ir muzika literatūroje.
Pastarasis atvejis, t. y. muzika literatūroje, aktualiausias mūsų nagrinėjamiems
klausimams. Vertėtų pažymėti, jog eilėraščių analizėse ir interpretacijose
atsispindės muzikos ir literatūros suartėjimo santykis, kurį W. Wolfas vadino
imitavimu, kitaip tariant, literatūros muzikalizavimu, o konkrečiau, vienas
šioje grupėje išskirtųjų lygmenų – formų ir struktūrų analogijos lygmuo. Eilė
raščių analizės ir interpretacijos procese aktualizuota intermedialioji muzikos
ir poezijos sąveika išprovokuos ir intertekstualumo prieitį, kurią traktuojame
kaip skaitymo metu atsirandančią, kitaip tariant, paties poetinio teksto išpro
vokuotą būtinybę (nuorodą) kreiptis į kitus tekstus ir sukurti intertekstinio
ryšio reikšmę ir prasmę.
12
gretinimo būdu. Kombinavimo principai veikia tokiuose lygmenyse kaip
žodžių, frazių, sakinių daryba, formavimas kalboje ir sąskambiai, sąskambių
progresijos ir harmoninės struktūros muzikoje. Eksperimentiniai tyrinėjimai
pateikia implicitinį šių principų pažinimo pobūdį, pasireiškiantį per daugybę
mentalinių gebėjimų aspektų.
13
Siekiant poetinėje formoje įžvelgti ir pateisinti struktūrines poezijos ir
muzikos kalbų analogijas bei ryšius, būtina suprasti prigimtines šių kalbų
ypatybes, t. y. muzikos kalbos ir verbaliosios kalbos (lingvistikos) anatomijos
ir jos sandaros elementų ir priemonių bendrybes bei skirtumus. Šiuolaikinės
kognityvistikos srityje neuromoksliniai šių dviejų sričių tyrinėjimai (Patel,
Kehler, Wolfe, Wolf, Gibson) atveria alternatyvias koncepcijas, išryškinančias
muzikos ir kalbos ryšių bendrybes.
Tyrinėdamas muzikos sintaksinę sandarą muzikologas Markas Aranovskis
(1991) pateikė motyvo ir struktūrinių melodijos elementų koncepciją, išryškin
damas galimas sąsajas su verbaliosios kalbos sintaksės fenomenu. Nurodome,
formos, analize. Pasinaudodami tuo, jog literatūros teorijas galime įveiksminti
kaip universalaus pobūdžio analitines technikas, šio darbo koncepciją geriau
siai nusakytume pasitelkdami esmines formalizmui bei poststruktūralizmui
(t. y. šiuolaikinės interpretacijos ir recepcijos teorijos) būdingas metodologines
nuostatas. Požiūrio į tekstą (tiek poetinį, tiek muzikinį) formalizmo ir post
struktūralizmo nuostatų koegzitencija atspindi tai, jog formalusis struktūrinis
teksto skaidymo metodas atliepia pirminį teksto struktūros analizės veiksmą,
o šiuolaikinės interpretacijos teorijos šiam analizės procesui padeda surasti
prasminius kodus. Pavyzdžiui, Roland’as Barthes’as straipsnyje „Struktūralistinė
veikla“ (1963) tarsi pateikė muzikos kūrinio analizės proceso kvintesenciją. Juk
kytis analizuojamojo teksto struktūravimo proceso suvokimui atskleisti, galime
papildyti pasitelkę literatūrologo Wolfgango Iserio siūlomą teksto pažinimo
strategiją, kur kombinavimo veiksmas įvardijamas kaip reikšmingai atrinktų
teksto elementų struktūravimas ir siejimas.
Poetinio teksto interpretacija, siekiant atskleisti muzikinės formos ir jos
raiškos analogijas, susiduria su daugialypės reikšmės problematika. Kad to
Anot B. Kaco,
daugiabalsiškumo efektas poetiniame tekste susiformuoja panaudojus tam

tokios ritmikos kontekste, jog klausytojui susidaro nenutrūkstamo tono skam
bėjimo įspūdis. Tokių ostinatinių struktūrų kaip vargonų pedalas, cantus firmus,
ostinatinės variacijos iliuzijos kūrimo poezijoje galimybės išsamiai nusakytos
B. Kaco studijoje. Remdamiesi šio autoriaus aprašytomis ostinatinių struktūrų
kūrimo galimybėmis siekiame jas įžvelgti Juditos Vaičiūnaitės eilėraščiuose
„Šarma“ (1977), „Asiūkliai“ (1968), „Antarktida“ (1962).

atitikmenis lemiantis poetinės medžiagos plėtotės pobūdis. Formos vientisumą
sukuria motyvinių ryšių sankabos dalių vidaus sandaroje, šių ryšių plėtotė ir
plėtotės transformacijos eilėraščio procese. S. Gedos eilėraščio „Trauksmas,
plauksmas, vanduo“ struktūros analizė atskleidžia, jog fugato epizode yra
sutelkta vidinė informacija ir semantinis teksto krūvis.
Šiame skyriuje suformuluoti ir analitiškai pagrįsti muzikai ir poezijai bendri
polifoninių elementų bei polifoninės formos komponavimo principai leidžia
įžvelgti struktūrinius daugiabalsiškumo modelius J. Vaičiūnaitės ir S. Gedos
eilėraščiuose. Suvokdami esminius daugiabalsiškumo principų atitikmenis
poezijoje, įgauname įgūdžių, kurie padeda skirti metaforišką ir analogišką
polifoninių komponavimo principų verbalizaciją. Polifoniškumo įžvalgos
papildo, praplečia eilėraščio semantinę, emocinę bei dinaminę ir ekspresyviąją
plotmes.

3.2. Keliaplanės formos įžvalgos: žiedinė kompozicija kaip da capo formos
analogija, paprastoji trijų dalių forma ir rondinis refreniškumas
Poezijos kūrinių kompozicija priklauso nuo sintaksinės sąrangos, ypač nuo
paralelizmų ir pakartojimų išdėstymo. Pagal kartojimo būdą skiriamos kelios
kompozicijos formos: anaforinė, žiedinė, spiralinė, amebinė. Žiedinę eilėraščio
kompoziciją muzikoje atitiktų da capo – paprastosios trijų dalių formos repri
zinis tipas. Paprastoji trijų dalių forma, grindžiama kartojimo principu (a b a),
yra viena universaliausių klasicizmo formų (be to, pakartojimu, ekspozicijos

Paslaptingos galios giedojimas savaip ataidi
Alfonso Nykos-Niliūno eilėraštyje „Cante jondo“ (1974, Žiemos teologija I).
Aptarta „giluminio“ giedojimo samprata nurodo ir leidžia pajusti/atskleisti
vieną iš kodų, kuriuo galime perskaityti eilėraštį. Cante jondo implikaciją,
tačiau skirtingai negu A. Nykos-Niliūno eilėraštyje su paratekstine nuoroda,
t. y. labiau „iš tolo“, atskleidžiame Juditos Vaičiūnaitės eilėraštyje „Saulė. Mažo
ras“ (1973).
modeliuojančius daugiasluoksniškumo aspektus: a) tam tikros muzikos formos
struktūrinės analogijos, kelių skirtingų formos struktūravimo ir komponavimo
principų koegzistencija; b) folkloro žanro, kaip struktūrinio modelio, implika
cija; c) struktūriniai dėsningumai, kuriais grindžiami tam tikrų formų bruožai,
t. y. kartojimas; d) eiliuotos kalbos garsų, intonacinės eilėraščio organizacijos
raiškos būdai, kuriuos galima susieti su muzikos kalbos elementais, raiškos
priemonėmis.
21
(A. Mackaus „Mirtiškoji“).
komponavimo principų implikacijos įžvalgas (A. Mackaus „Augintiniai“,
A. Nykos-Niliūno „Cante jondo“, J. Vaičiūnaitės „Saulė. Mažoras“, „Vero
nika“, A. Mackaus „Mirtiškoji“).
ir jų tonacinės dinamikos maršrutai);
• svarbus kriterijus, kuriuo remiantis galime apibrėžti pagrindinės ir šalu
tinės partijų ribas;
• sustiprina montuojamos temos pagrįstumą ir neleidžia žaisti analogi
nėmis manipuliacijomis, temą nusakant tik semantinės interpretacijos
lygmeniu;
tizavimo strategija. Intertekstinių nuorodų maršrutai analizuotų ir interpretuotų
eilėraščių struktūrose pasireiškė dviem aspektais:
• kai intertekstinės nuorodos neakivaizdžiai implikuoja tam tikrus už
tekstinių reikšminių nuorodų santykius formaliosios teksto struktūros
atžvilgiu;
tyrimo diskursui įtaką darė aiškiai sufokusuotas dėmesys į poetinio teksto in
29
gvildenamos temos komplikuotumo ir plataus konteksto daugelis diserta
cijoje suformuluotų aspektų, o ir nemaža dalis likusių darbo užribyje, būtų
verti išsamesnio tyrimo. Suprantama, pasirinktų poetinių tekstų analizės ir
interpretacijos yra nežymi XX amžiaus lietuvių poezijos pavyzdžių dalis, tad
įvairių muzikalumo aspektų sąrangos apraiškos galėtų būti toliau tobulinamos
ir taikomos poetiniams tekstams nagrinėti.

INTRODUCTION
31
towards a spatial aesthetic communication scheme realised by the theory of
intertextuality: text (poetical text) – culture (other texts among which – music
as a cultural text) – reader1. We believe that in this context the analysis and
interpretation of poetical texts, going along semantisation of formal structure,
allow introducing one of many possible answers to Joseph Kerman’s question:
“How to get out from music analysis?”2
Object
The object of the dissertation concerns the analogies of the principles of music
composition in Lithuanian poetry of the 20th century. Music in literature is one of
the forms of relations between music and literature in taxonomy of comparative
conception. The research object, in a broad sense, is a field of the relationship
between music and poetry that is defined from a musicological perspective,
while the research level specifically selected in music literature is the analogies
of forms and structures. Hence the stance on and intellectual attitude towards
reading a poetical text are inevitably grounded mainly by the musical experi
ence the author of the research paper has gained. The possibilities to envisage
in poetical texts the manifestations of music structural and compositional
principles and musical forms enable one to assume that there be certain uni
versal principles of creative consciousness as well as reception and perception
in creative works, which determine the phenomenon of analogies.
Referring to the analysis and interpretation of poetical texts it is sought to
disclose more general analogies of cognitive patterns on various levels of a poem,
looking through the prism of music creation, its dramaturgic development as
well as form and structure analogies. Seeking to highlight these aspects of poetry
musicality, the dissertation examines the following components conditioning
closeness of music and poetry:
• the aspects of intersections of musical, poetical and linguistic expression
(the possibilities of interconnectedness of structural and semantic or
ganization principles as well as the assumptions of poetry musicality in
terms of universal and structural references of a text are outlined; the
parameters of reading which form the analysis and interpretation of
poems are distinguished in the research paper);
1
It concerns a spatial model of aesthetic communication which modifies a traditional linear
model sender (author) → message (piece of work/text) → receiver (reader/audience). For further
information see I. Melnikova, “Intermediality map” in Colloquia, No. 26, 2011, pp. 25–26.
2
We have in mind the article “How we got into music analysis, and how to get out?” written
by Joseph Kerman (1924), one of the most prominent musicologists of the 20th century in the
USA. It was first published in the journal Critical Inquiry, 7, 1980, pp. 311–331. See Lithuanian
translation of the article in Muzika kaip kultūros tekstas [Music as a Cultural Text], Apostrofa,
2007, pp. 33–59, for reflections on this article see R. Goštautienė, “New musicology and cultural
investigations into music” in Muzika kaip kultūros tekstas, pp. 9–12.
32
• an expression of polyphonic perception in poetry (the assumptions for
analogies of multivoicedness, imitation technique in poetry as well as
their expression in a poetical text are examined);
• a multi-layered structure of analogies (the analogues of musical forms
based on recurrence as well as their aspects of coexistence in a poetical
text are researched; the examples of realising multivoicedness in poetical
texts are presented);
• the contours of sonata form and its varieties in poetical texts (the peculi
arities of the development of sonata logic as well as functional relations
of parts are investigated; the examples of interpretation of sonata form
analogies are presented, as well).
33
The aim and tasks of the study
The aim of the dissertation is to reveal the analogies of the fundamental prin
ciples of music language, structure and composition in examples of Lithuanian
poetry of the 20th century as well as to determine significant codes of these
analogies which could be applied in the process of analysing and interpreting
a poetical text so as to identify the forms of music expression. Seeking to attain
the underlined aim, the following tasks are put forward:
• to substantiate that the strategy of semantisation of structural components
is implied in the strategy of formalistic-structural analysis;
• to examine the possibilities of applying the principles of polyphony in
poetry, to outline specific aspects of approving the analogies of polyphonic
perception, and to present the patterns of composing polyphonic music
in a poetical form;
• to uncover the components of a poem’s multifarious structure and dem
onstrate their manifestations in the interpretation of poems;
• to highlight the most problematic aspects of sonata form and their topi
cality in searching out the analogies of sonata principles in poetical texts,
and to reveal, referring to the patterns of the poems being analysed, the
possibilities of solving the most problematic questions;
• to ascertain whether in describing the relation between poetry and music
it is possible to utilize the means of music analysis and read a poetical
text from the perspectives of exploiting the approach of interdisciplinary
musicology.
34
composition, form and structure, for in order to uncover musicality of a poeti
cal text it is mainly concentrated on phonetic, acoustic, intonation-related and
rhythmic organization on the basis of musical features. Hence it is expedient
to distinguish the research work of musicologist Jūratė Gustaitė (the poetry
of Eduardas Mieželaitis is analysed in the context of vocal music, 1981) and
that of literary scholar Rūta Brūzgienė (the musicality of poetry by Maironis,
Jonas Aistis, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, Balys Sruoga is examined in terms of
form, 2004) that are similar to topicality of our research paper.
Novelty and originality of the dissertation theme is associated with the fact
that this study is almost one of the first on a problematic plane of Lithuanian
musicology when seeking to disclose the process of analysing traditional
musicology we choose not a musical composition but a verbal one – a poem,
in other words, an object being traditionally related to the domain of literary
studies. More precisely, it is exclusively referred to Lithuanian poetry and the
poem being actualised is not correlated with a piece of vocal music, i.e. it is
concentrated not on topicality of the relationship between poetry and music
(vocal music) but on problematic aspects prevailing in music poetry in the light
of music composition form and structure analogies. The fundamental problem
of the study is that seeking to justify such realisation of musicological charac
ter in poetical texts we have to encompass a wide context of interdisciplinary
topicality the multifarious aspects of which is hard to determine and configure.
Understanding that a problematic field of the relation between poetry and
music is multi-faceted it was necessary to form a provision determining the
dissertation structure, to outline a field of topicality, the context of scientific
literature and poetic texts need analysing. It is significant to point out that with
regard to the chosen topic of the research it is attempted to implicitly answer
the question why a musicologist has to undertake and can analyse poetry;
moreover, it is sought to find and form certain analytical-interpretational
methodology which would allow achieving the way of semantisation on the
basis of formal analysis as well as demonstrating how syntax, formal structure
analogies participate in the semantics of a poetical text.

Brown 1948 and others). Also, the dissertation mentions some works on
musicology related to the fundamental questions of the principles of music
language, musical form or composition (Григорьева 2004, Симакова 2002,

group of works) of contemporary literary theories and interpretations, the texts
of literary theory criticism helped to form the strategies of interdisciplinary text
analysis and interpretation as well as methodological approaches; at the same
time, conceptual research tools laying no claim to specifically underlined me
thodics or systematic, which determine the attitude of the author of the research
as a reader in terms of a poetical text, were formed (Eco 2004, Lotman 2004,
Iser 2002, Ricoeur 2000, Lotman 1996, Barthes 1991, Jakobson 1987, Riffaterre
1983, Barthes 1981, Eco 1979, Riffaterre 1978, Bloom 1975 and others). The
examples of more interesting musical-poetical theories that came into being at
the beginning of the 20th century are presented (Белый 1929, Сабанеев 1923,
1916 and others). The field of investigation concerning the language of
musicality is grounded by the insights gained into the examination of cognitive
psychology, referring to the information regarding special linguistics as well as
neuroscience or experiments (Patel 2007, Wolf, Gibson 2006, Ambrazas 2005,

mentions some investigations conducted into the topicality of philosophy
and cultural studies, literary science, poetry and literary theories as well as
other sciences (Cook, Newson 2007, Goštautienė 2007, Kerman 2007 (1980),

Seeking to reveal the analogies of the principles of music composition in
Lithuanian poetry of the 20th century, the dissertation focuses on a thorough
examination of the following poems: Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas “The Symphony
of Summer”, “Cante Jondo” (Nyka-Niliūnas 1996), Nijolė Miliauskaitė “In the
Dream I Sewed a Black Dress…”, “The Visit”, “The Home…” (Miliauskaitė 1999),
Judita Vaičiūnaitė “Calypso”, “December”, “The Rime”, “Equiseta”, “Antarctica”,

“Three Fugues”, “The Sun. Major”, “Veronica”, “The White Night”, “The Old
Marketplace” (Vaičiūnaitė 2005), Sigitas Geda “The Draught, Flock, Water”
(Geda 1994), Jonas Aistis “Of Autumn and a Dog”, “A Circlet” (Aistis 1991),
Algimantas Mackus “Foster Children”, “In Dying” (Mackus 1999), Vytautas
Bložė “The Chemist’s” (Bložė 1990), Rimantas Kmita “Under the Effulgent
Dome” (Kmita 2009).

multifaceted codes of reading a poem in the structure of which the analogies
of recapitulation-related principles are highlighted are revealed on the basis
of certain interpretations of poems by Jonas Aistis, Algimantas Mackus, Al
fonsas Nyka-Niliūnas, and Judita Vaičiūnaitė. Part Four concentrates on the
topic of sonata form and its variety in poetical texts. The peculiarities of the
development of sonata logic as well as the functional relations of form parts
are actualised. The characteristics of the outlined sonata compositional tech
nique, structural principles, form continuity as well as the possibilities of such
analogies found in poetical texts are concretised with reference to the poems
by Vytautas Bložė, Judita Vaičiūnaitė, Rimantas Kmita, and Nijolė Miliauskaitė.
Seeking to highlight the structural aspects of the poems being interpreted, the
author of the research colours, develops, structures and as if personalises the
poems presented in the study; therefore, the original verses of these poems are
provided in the dissertation appendix.
38
and poetry actualised in the process of analysing and interpreting poems will
instigate the approach of intertextuality which we treat as the necessity emerging
during the reading, in other words, provoked by the very poetical text to address
other texts and create meaning and significance of intertextual relations.
39
guage has to be grounded by universal natural laws, by structural interdepend
ence relations whose certain elements approved by cognitive investigations
(S. Pinker, R. Jackendoff, D. Raffman, A. Patel, I. Peretz, M. Tramo, R. Labre
cque) analogically correlate with linguistic parameters.
The universals of general laws of art and forms intervene in the field of
literary arts. According to E. H. Turpin (1888–1889), general laws and their
manifestations can be found in all the arts. This is the development and mul
tiplication of details, gravitation of details, in other words, the law of gravity
to the centre or culmination, structural peculiarities, a certain proportion of
various partitions and parts constituting the whole, i.e. the universals obvious
in both nature and art forms. The author of the research names it as “instincts
of musical form”. Generally speaking, the main principles of art form are exhi
bition, development and recurrence /recapitulation. These principles virtually
developed in the forms of various arts (especially time art) in an identical way,
for in their nature they characterised spontaneous processes of nature and
grounded the principles typical of human life.
Music semiotician Vladimir Karbusicky (1997), getting into the search for
primordial shapes of form, discovers and defines six existential types of music
which correspond to six archetypical universal principles of form creation. The
systematics of universality of archetypical music forms presented by V. Kar
busicky can be complemented in terms of the universals of human experience.
The focus of the cognitive theory investigating the topic of musical phenomena
is placed on the fact that conscious and/or subconscious perception consists
of how internal perceptive models correspond or combine with experiential
models. The universal schemes of perception presented by Candace Brower
(2000) apparently echo the universal principles of form structuring and denote
the possibilities of combinations for a variety of forms to develop which play
an important role in understanding musical-metaphorical meanings. We may
consider that universal schemes of perception can be correlated with the prin
ciples of composing musical forms and expressed as fundamental principles of
perception in the arts of sound and time (in music and poetry).
Seeking to envisage and justify structural analogies and relations of both
musical and poetical language in a poetical form, it is of great importance to
understand natural peculiarities of these languages, i.e. similarities and dif
ferences of the elements and means of musical language and verbal language
(linguistics) anatomy and its structure. In the field of contemporary cognitive
studies the neuroscientific research (Patel, Kehler, Wolfe, Wolf, Gibson) on
these two spheres uncloses alternative conceptions highlighting the similarities
of the relationship between music and language.
Researching a syntactic structure of music, musicologist Mark Aranovsky
(1991) presents the concept of motive and structural elements of melody by
40
highlighting possible correlations with a phenomenon of verbal language syntax.
We indicate the intersections, being formed from our viewpoint, of music and
poetry in a grammatical aspect which during the study would allow reasonably
applying and using the methods of analysing musical syntax.
In this Chapter, the outlined universal perceptive models substantiating the
structures on the ground of universal principles that are formed in the creative
process, as well as the discussed aspects of the intersections between music and
language allow in further practice-related chapters approaching the reasonable
examples related to similarities shared by the structural principles of music and
poetry and the composition of music and language, as well as some concrete
patterns of applying analytical methods based on analogies.
41
(i.e. contemporary interpretations and reception theories). The attitude towards
both poetical and musical texts, a coexistence of the provisions of formalism
and post-structuralism reflect the fact that a formal and structural method
of deconstructing a text echoes a primary action of analysing the structure
of a text, while contemporary theories of interpretation help this process of
analysis find meaningful codes. For instance, in Roland Barthes’s article “The
Structuralist Activity” (1963) the quintessence of the analytical process of a
musical piece seems to be provided. Interpretation of a musical piece begins
with deconstructing a musical text on various levels (according to his words,
there occurs a selection of significant elements of a text) and eventually be
comes integrated into the interpretation-related process of structuring and (re)
composing a musical text (according to Barthes – the action of arrangement).
The position which we would wish to take in developing our understanding
of the process of structuring a text under analysis can be complemented by
referring to the strategy of text comprehension (proposed by literary scholar
Wolfgang Iser) wherein the action of combination is treated as the process of
structuring and associating meaningful elements of a text.
Seeking to reveal the analogies of musical form and its expression, interpre
tation of a poetical text encounters the topic of multifarious meaning. In order
to legitimately approach in further chapters interpretations of poetical texts on
the basis of which it is sought to reveal potential meanings, determined by the
analogies of music language principles, of a poem, we present some conceptual
provisions (of P. Ricoeur, U. Eco, J. Lotman, M. Riffaterre and others) of con
temporary interpretation and reception theories which, we assume, empower
us to pursue embracing in a poetical text and interpretatively presenting the
mysteries of musical principles and forms. While trying to concretize the
strategies of text analysis and interpretation realised in this chapter as well
as the similarities of structural composition of musical and verbal languages
outlined in the previous chapter, we provide the example of an analogy of the
syntactical analysis of a poetical text “Summer Symphony” (1941) by Alfonsas
Nyka-Niliūnas (b. 1919). A musical analogy of continuous motive-variant
related development technique is expressed in the process of motive selection
and arrangement. In this way the integrity typical of symphonic perception
as well as a coherent interdependence of all elements is achieved in four parts’
cycle of poems “Summer Symphony”.
Both musical and poetical spheres share similar characteristics in the way
that regardless the differences of syntactical material, the relations of interde
pendence of its elements are determined by operations of functional thinking.
The most important aspect is that both spheres have functional syntactical
strategies which assume meaning on the ground of interaction and symbiosis
of mutual relations and interconnectedness (Patel 1998). These observations
42
activate the idea of modal analogy in literature and poetry, proposed by mu
sicologist and literary scholar Boris Katz (1997). According to B. Katz, it is
obvious that we will not find similarities with tonality in the word art. Modal
organization is possible only in the sphere of music, i.e. sound relations. How
ever, the author manages to draw a conclusion stating that modal relations of
form in a literary analogy of musical form have to be replaced by the relations
of other elements, i.e. by those that are specific and meaningful to poetical
material, similarly to modal relations that are inherent to musical material
only. Thus the researcher’s conviction is that time relations can be analogous
to modal relations of musical form in poetry. Appealing to B. Katz’s theory, we
provide a poem “In the Dream I Sewed a Black Dress…” (1981) written by Nijolė
Miliauskaitė (1950–2002) as an example of modal analogy as well as motive-
related semantic analysis. The “modal” analysis of the poem reveals that in this
case we can treat the principle of the relationship between verb tenses as the
main principle of textual structuring. The structure of tense shifting becomes
second and is grounded by partitions of selected motive relations. The discussed
topicality of modal analysis of a poetical text is dealt with in the interpretation
of poems presented in further chapters of the scientific work.
43
not allow the possibility of real harmony/consonance; it enforces one to search
for a point of departure in structures of human consciousness. According to B.
Katz, such possibility provides one of Ernst Kurth’s theories (1934). Analysing
Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, E. Kurth drew attention to the fact that a single-
line creates an illusion of polyphonic texture, in other words, a melodic line is
created in applying the principle of covert polyphony, and that allows creating
an illusion of simultaneous sound of two or more voices, using one voice. In
his book “Musical Ways to Russian Poetry”, Chapter “Illusion of Polyphony”,
B. Katz tries to prove that such analogy is possible in poetry, speaking about
polyphony not in a broad sense but taking into account one of its varieties –
covert polyphony of a single melodic line. According to B. Katz, an effect of
multivoicedness is formed in a poetic text by utilizing certain principles of
material composition, three significant conditions are therefore necessary for
creating an illusion of multivoicedness and only interaction of these conditions
can create an effect of polyphonic illusion: 1) in the author’s voice is highlighted
a certain number of covert voices; 2) it is essential that at least two relatively
independent texts be found in a poetical text (poem), i.e. each text has to form
a comparatively completed semantic and syntactic structure; 3) independent
texts have to be united in a way that there should emerge an illusion of their
synchronicity, i.e. a simultaneous sound, not the sound of successive voices
occurring one after another, in other words, synchronicity is formed when
each voice is separated into fragments and they are altered in such a way that
a intermitted text should continue after another text being integrated. Hence
we can draw a conclusion that independent texts being capable of creating
multivoicedness in a poem speak polyphonically in a poetical text on a com
municative plane of a poem.
44
of the poem yields to selection of three independent texts. Using an analogy of
covert polyphony technique, we can see real but not metaphorical possibilities
of polyphony manifestations.
45
can be considered as a fugato episode. This is Sigitas Geda’s (1943–2008) poem
“The Draught, Flock, Water” (1991). A poetical form of the poem seems not to
include any signs echoing the principles of polyphonic form creation. However,
during the retroactive reading the character, determining the equivalents of a
certain compositional analogy and musical form, of poetical material devel
opment becomes highlighted. Form continuity is created by motive-implied
relations in the intrinsic structure of parts, by the development of these rela
tions and its transformations in the process of a poem. In S. Geda’s poem “The
Draught, Flock, Water”, the structural analysis reveals that the fugato episode
incorporates hidden information and a semantic load of the text.
Being common to music and poetry, the principles of polyphonic elements
and that of polyphonic form creation which are formulated and analytically
grounded in this chapter allow envisaging the structural models of multivoiced
ness in the poems by J. Vaičiūnaitė and S. Geda. Understanding the essential
equivalents of the principles of multivoicedness, we acquire the skills that help
us distinguish a metaphorical and analogous polyphonic verbalisation of the
principles of composition. The insights into polyphony complement and expand
the semantic, emotional, dynamic and expressive horizon of a poem.
46
On the basis of the characteristics of musical recurrence, we will, referring
to a catalogue of classical-romantic forms, search for analogies of musical
expression of the phenomenon of recurrence, seeking to demonstrate the
possibilities for coexistence of the latter in one poem. In the interpretation of
poetical texts we will see that referring to one of universal principles we can
interpret a poem by the codes of multifarious composition.
47
3.3. The codes of reading that model the semantics of folklore
In this Part the aspect of multifacetedness is focused on the field of investigating
genres and the endeavours to show that a multifarious contexture of a poem
can be grounded by folklore genre associations/implications are presented.
48
whose titles have references, for instance Algimantas Mackus’s “Litany” (1962),
or Kęstutis Navakas’s “Litany”. The two poems virtually differ in semantic and
structural character, for example, K. Navakas’s “Litany” primarily appeals to
litany etymology (in Latin litanija, letania from Greek lite – prayer, plea, peti
tion) and its parody. In order to find the litany-related poems without a refer
ence in the title, different insights of initial reading are needed. The following
examples can be: “The Hymn to a Mysterious Rose” (1954) by A. Nyka-Niliūnas,
“The Air Raid” (1976), “Veronica” (1970) by J. Vaičiūnaitė. By analysing and
interpreting the above-mentioned works, we can illustrate the possibilities of
integrating the elements of litany genre in a poetical text. From a structural point
of view, a poem can be ascribed to a common type of two forms (a b), yet in the
light of motive development it is a two-part composition having one theme and
being variable. This process of formal analysis actualizes the strategy pertaining
to the meaning of architextual reference: the search for a referential meaning
of litany genre becomes a point of departure in the process of interpretation
and eventually explains both formal and intertextual implications of a poem.
It is known that every poem which can be read one way or another in terms
of litany unfolds its own possibilities and implications. J. Vaičiūnaitė’s poem
“Veronica” (1970) is one of unique examples of such expression in poetry.
49
composition technique, and genre. Each element of these levels is multifarious
and unites the features of different models. When analysing form, its unity
with other levels in the creative process becomes clear, while interpretation of
a poetical text reveals that a multifarious form in A. Mackus’s “In Dying” is
grounded by variable development of material, by the principle of repetition
and of structural music (litany) genre analogy as well as by the possibilities of
textual polyphony.
This Part deals with peculiarities of musical sonata form and reveals its features
enabling one to justify the analogies of sonata form in poetical texts.
50
sical forms (simple or complex three-part rondo, rondo-sonata, and the like).
The sonata principle of thematic development also transfuses many forms of
classicism and romanticism. It is mostly acceptable to define such phenomena
as tonal dependence of themes, development, and continuous variation as the
influence of the sonata principle over other forms. This attitude incorporates
the question of tonal relations of the exposition and the recapitulation: TD–TT
tonal relations were formed in the old two-part form of a pre-classical sonata.
A classical sonata form simply accumulated and integrated these principles. It
is hence apparent that the essence of sonata form is not what makes it closer
to other forms but what distinguishes it; not the principle of contrasting op
position but “dynamic correlations” determine contradiction of thematicity
and functional parts of sonata form; this contradiction is an essential feature
of sonata dramaturgy. J. Tiulin (1974) points out that the principle of sonata
form is primarily grounded by the very process (form creation) of development
which conditions the structure of the whole and its parts, the movement of
thematic material, the arrangement and distribution of different themes, their
modulation and tonal relations. Thus the quintessence of sonata form lies in
the relationship between processuality and compositional structure. The lat
ter is represented by the only part determining the whole of the form – the
exposition of a sonata.
Taking into account the material of music language and its analytical
means, the importance of the exposition in a musical piece does not generate
misunderstanding that might distort a canonical sonata form. However, we
encounter this problem when endeavouring to envisage sonata form in poetical
forms. Very often, even contrasting themes, fixed at the beginning of a poem,
do not assume thematic functions characteristic of the exposition and the
recapitulation of sonata in the process of form; we therefore assume that by
having understated specific functional and tonal relations of a sonata parts we
can find this form in a number of poems wherein a three-part musical form
analogy is encoded.
One of the most important principles determining sonata form falls on the
stage of thematic exposition. Grounded by generative formation and musical
syntactic means, the analogies related to the phenomenon, meaningful and
structural, of a musical theme are generally impossible to name in the poetical
material. In other words, by defining the concept of themes as a personified
collection of syntactic elements constituting the said concept (elements are
hierarchical, have their own lexis, harmony, movement, subordination, accents,
implications, allocation of “size”, etc.), the question on functionality of musical
theme equivalent faces a complex issue in the nature of a poem’s artistic form.
The insight of a musical theme analogy in a poem is complicated and hardly
specified as in music a thematic material is structurally discreet. The search
51
for the analogies of structural boundaries of a musical theme is determined by
meaningful decomposition of a poetical text. It is important how we treat the
very “theme” in poetry. We are inclined to assume that a strong accentuated
semantic motive would correspond to the concept of thematic motives in a
poem, while interconnectedness of semantically correlating thematic motives
would reflect an analogy of structuring/composition of a thematic field. For
a thematic motive in a musical form is of great importance a generative func-
tion (defining the said form), i.e. from the inside of the theme in further form
there spread its “energetic” conceptual-structural atoms, a theme initiates
that dissemination, wherein generative energy is lurking, and eventually – the
transformed, modified and even reverse elements form an artistic text of a
poem. A musical theme is recognised as the formation comprising a syntactic
hierarchy of motives (sub-motives), harmony shifting, rhythmic figures, and
other constituents of music language. Meanwhile, a “theme” in a poetical text
is formed thorough meaningful relations of words on the basis of poetical lan
guage grammar and is perceived as a semantic formation. In a poetic piece, a
“theme” can be defined and described as a semantic substratum, as a receptive,
semantic formation of certain words, their relations and interpretation quality
emerging from them. Thus the possibility for the equivalent of “thematic body”
as a dramaturgically autonomous meaningful entity of form in a poetical text is
determined mainly by a cognitive and receptive analogy. As it is hard to struc
turally justify the musical theme analogy in a poetical text, we tend to assume
that the criterion of the “tonality” phenomenon equivalent would allow us to
reasonably determine and ground the boundaries of thematic sphere and its
dramaturgic independence. Hence we will treat the relations of verb tenses as
ones analogous to tonal relations of sonata form.
52
4.3. The trends of form chromatisation in a poetical text
This Chapter seeks to name the equivalents of the principles of sonata form
in a poetical text, revealing the possibilities of atypical sonata form analogies.
Demonstrating the validity of such attitude, we present an interpretative analysis
of the poem “Under the Effulgent Dome” (from the collection of poetry Švelniai
tariant, “To Say the Least” 2009) by Rimantas Kmita (b. 1977) which is ground
by the insights gained into the principles of sonata form. The latter actualises
an intertextual reference whose strategy of meaning in a poem stands up as the
principle determining the peculiarities of creating a sonata form. Referring to
the analysis and interpretation of N. Miliauskaitė’s poem “The Home…” (1985),
it is sought to realise the example when a poem’s semantic form evokes a rather
atypical analogy of musical sonata form in terms musical form proportionality.
On the other hand, the aspects of thematic, “key”, dramaturgic analysis reveal
that we are able to envisage a sonata’s principles and its from in this poem.
CONCLUSIONS
A dialogue of poetry and music has been grounded by the author’s endeavours
to actualise a poem’s structure in the aspect of the principles of music composi
tion and its form. One of the fundamental means of music analysis – a formal
method – has enabled one to decompose a text into meaningful formations,
allowed activating formal elements of a text (phoneme, word, grammatical
conjunctions or ellipse, etc.), helped ascertain the distinctive peculiarities of
certain form, define the shapes of poems’ forms, the boundaries of their parts,
present structural equivalents of musical schemes. In order to practically im
plement the theoretical approach of the scientific work’s object, the poetical
texts of the 20th century Lithuanian poetry on the structural basis on which
the analogies of classical music forms and compositional principles have
been disclosed. These poetical texts actualised and allowed researching the
possibilities of polyphonic perception, forms grounded by recurrence, their
coexistence, cohesion of compositional techniques as well as the analogies of
sonata form in the Lithuanian poetry of the 20th century. We tend to presume
that the fundamental aspects of the principles of music composition prove
the assumption related to functionality of universal perceptive principles in a
creative practice, put forward in the dissertation.
1. Musical forms and musical techniques as a specific understanding of
the system of different levels and relations require the knowledge of music
science and musical experience. It seems likely that this knowledge and expe
rience provide such a field of view wherein musical perception and analogies
of musical forms reflect certain cognitive universalities. This endeavour to
reveal the analogies of musical form and its expression through interpretation
53
of a poetical text does not exhaust the possibilities of disclosing most musical
Lithuanian poetry, rather it presents a certain conception and way of poetry
reading in the provisions of which the code of impossibility of one and finite
textual interpretation is incorporated. Such attitude has been created by the
fact that the possibility of interpretation is encoded not in all the texts of even
most musical Lithuanian texts in terms of music compositional principles as
well as form.
2. Formal identification of structural levels enables one to transfer and
adapt certain general means of the syntactic analysis of the music of lan
guage: these are the aspects of intersections between the music of language
and verbal language on a grammatical level (analogies of motive relations
of motive-word, key-time, words or phrases as well as interrelationship of
these elements). This complicated aspect is illustrated by the examples from
A. Nyka-Niliūnas’s “Summer Symphony” and J. Miliauskaitė’s “In the Dream
I Sewed a Black Dress…”. Formal decomposition of a text and the process
of selecting certain elements create the need for arrangement operation.
As a result of these actions (selection and arrangement), meaningful relations
(e.g. a particular principle of recurrence) are formed which must inevitably be
semantisized. Semantisation of meaningful relations actualises another level of
textual structure – characteristic principles of composing a musical form and
manifestations of their analogies in a poetical text. Referring to the attitude
that the question of a work’s form as a process is closely related to the category
of analysis and interpretation, we have arrived at a conclusion that analysing a
poetical text as a means of creating a musical form we have to accentuate the
necessity of the relationship between analysis and interpretation, a bidirectional
vector of this relationship. When interpreting a poem from the perspective
of applying the principles of music composition and form analogies, we have
understood that the musical expression, inserted by functional analogies in
the arts (in this case poetry) including referential meanings, resolves the topic
of music analysis semantisation. Hence it has to be acknowledged that in that
case the strategy of semantisation of structural components which is implied
in the strategy of formalistic and structural analysis relate the understanding
of textual structure with semantic codes of a text.
3. The substantiation of specific analogies of polyphonic techniques and
texture in poetry is complicated due to linear existence of poetry, and therefore
requires specific circumstances to create proper conditions for simultaneous
sound of several voices. It is worthwhile pointing out that it is easy to “fall” into
the concept of polyphony, endowing it with metalinguistic approaches, in other
words, into discussion about polyphony in a general way, but not into the ap
plication of analogies grounded by the principles of polyphonic technique for
the analysis of a poem. The foundation for this is provided by the peculiarities
54
of multifacetedness, complexity, and multisemanticity implied in the concep
tual basis of polyphony. Considering the position of musicological analysis,
we have concluded that we can systematise/classify these characteristics. The
features of multifacetedness, complexity and multisemanticity of a poem fall
into two different categories:
• One incorporates the phenomenon of multifariousness wherein the
coexistence of several various principles of form structuring and com
position lies. The interpretation and analysis of poems have shown that a
text of multifaceted structure in its own semantic whole often embodies
several compositional movements or several compositional techniques.
Due to it, the multilayered forms have been actualised in poetical texts,
i.e. the possibilities of da capo and referential form overlapping (in J. Ais
tis’s “A Circlet”), and that of compositional techniques, i.e. a cohesion of
various forms, fugue, and aleatoric music (in A. Mackus’s “In Dying”).
The poems of multilayered structure have enabled one to reveal their
reading code by referring to the insights gained into the implication of
folklore genres and their compositional principles (in A. Mackus’s “Foster
Children”, A. Nyka-Niliūnas’s “Cante jondo”, J. Vaičiūnaitė’s “The Sun.
Major”, “Veronica”, A. Mackus’s “In Dying”).
• The other category has uncovered the aspects of polyphony, multivoiced
ness, and synchronic multilayeredness in poetry. The foreseen possibilities
of expressing the principles of music composition in poetry have revealed
or, rather, have once more confirmed that interaction of two arts is pri
marily grounded by natural laws of arts of sounds – language sounds and
music sounds – and time. No matter how it was tried to argue in different
periods that the phonic beginning of language could be separated from
the word meaning, still it would prove that it was impossible to deny that
sound and its meaning were inseparable phenomena. The word-meaning
concept presented in the scientific work has evoked the word-sound
level. The latter, and most often their interrelationship, has unclosed
functionality of covert multivoicedness when frequently and regularly
occurring sounds become sort of intonational formulae which create an
illusion of incessant sound, or when it is possible, on a plane of linear
text structuring, to envisage an illusion of simultaneous sound of both
formally and semantically independent voices. We can therefore speak
about the analogies of multivoicedness (in J. Vaičiūnaitė’s “The Chant”,
“December”, N. Miliauskaitė’s “The Visit”), ostinato (in J. Vaičiūnaitė’s
“Equiseta”, “Antarctica”), the pedal point (in J. Vaičiūnaitė’s “The Rime”),
imitative technique (in J. Vaičiūnaitė’s “Three Fugues”, S. Geda’s “The
Draught, Flock, Water”) in poems that are revealed under the conditions
of multivoicedness.

4. Considering the problematic aspects of sonata form characteristics and
seeking to ascertain the analogies of sonata form principles, the most important
aspects of sonata form have been realised: the dependence of tonal thematicity,
the genetic unification of contrasting themes, functional and tonal relations
of parts. As it is difficult to structurally justify a musical form analogy by a
complete volume of certain features in a poetical text, the conclusion has been
drawn that the boundaries of thematic sphere, its dramaturgic independence
can reasonably and argumentatively be determined by the criterion of the “to
nality” phenomenon equivalent. Therefore, the idea of B. Katz’s tonal analogy in
poetry named as a tonality-verb tense form has been put forward. According to
this, the grammatical forms of the Lithuanian language have been analysed, the
chosen “time” concept has allowed researching and hypothetically explicating
the possibilities of analogies of the Lithuanian language typical verb forms such
as participle, compound tenses, adverbial modifiers of time, derivatives. We
believe that searching for the analogies of sonata form in a poetical work it is
important to give tonal relations prominence due to several reasons:
• It consolidates and grounds a more natural interrelationship of rhetoric
and musical form with its foundations named in music (tonal independ
ence of themes and their tonal movement paths);
• An important criterion on the basis of which we can outline the bounda
ries of major and minor parts;
• It fortifies the validation of theme arrangement and does not allow play
ing with analogical manipulations, defining a theme only on a level of
semantic interpretation;
• By eliminating a tonal factor, we may analyse dramaturgically half of
the world’s poems through the prism of sonata form, for repetition is
one of more frequently occurring structural models of poetical form, a
fundamental feature of both poetical and musical language.
Analysing concrete poems, the manifestations of analogies of both canonic/
normative sonata form (in V. Bložė’s “The Chemist’s”, J. Vaičiūnaitė’s “The Old
Marketplace”) and atypical sonata form (in R. Kmita’s “Under the Effulgent
Dome”, N. Miliauskaitė’s “The Home…”) were demonstrated.
5. It has to be pointed out that a formal and structural code of reading has
instigated the references of connotative meanings luring in a text in almost
all the poems analysed in the dissertation. To explain and perceive the said
references we have appealed to intertextual approaches which have claimed
to draw attention to other texts of different character (encyclopaedia, diction
aries, folklore, poetry, etc.), to activate a paratext. It should be noted that the
found meaning of these references has proved/justified analytically defined
structural analogies of the poems analysed, and often it allowed understanding
the aspects, unexplained by other means, of a poem’s structural processuality
56
and semantics. Drawing our attention to the fact that all three poetical texts
have demanded an intertextual attitude and with the help of this approach the
reading codes embracing various aspects of the principles of music composi
tion have been found, we can assume that intertextual references, similar to
the mentioned strategy of formalistic and structural analysis, have implied the
strategy of semantisation of structural components. The paths of intertextual
references in the structures of the analysed and interpreted poems have been
expressed in two aspects:
• when intertextual references imply certain relations of meaningful refer
ences in terms of formal textual structure;
• when a formal process of selecting elements urges one to observe intertex
tual references lurking in structural relations, which (references) return
to a text as both semantically and structurally realised meanings.
6. On the basis of this research we have proved the belief that outlining the
main relations between the complemented-one-another poles of formal and
semantic analysis we can depolarise the aspects of understanding both musical
and poetical texts, defining them as analogies. The fundamental component
of these definitions is to be related to the belief that the approaches of musico
logical analysis in terms of interdisciplinary musicology can serve as universal
analytical models, search for methodological bonds grounding structural rela
tions of poetry and music. It should be pointed out that the scope of investiga
tion in the dissertation has been influenced by a clearly focused attention on
textual interpretation whose point of departure is oriented towards a musical/
musicological sign as the interdisciplinary concept. The development of this
sign has disclosed multifaceted ways of interpretation, one needs special in
vestigation, i.e. shifting to the sphere of scientific study of cognitive psychology
in order to more broadly and specifically ascertain the models related a mode
of perceptive and empirical universalities in poetry, in the texts on music and
other arts as well as culture (in a broad sense).
The research has demonstrated that the search for the strategies of analysing
and interpreting a text of interdisciplinary character can be useful. It should
be acknowledged that due to complexity of the topic and its wider context
many aspects formulated in the dissertation and a fair load of work left beyond
the scope of investigation could deserve more comprehensive research. It is
understandable that the analyses and interpretations of the selected poetical
texts are a small part of the examples of the 20th century Lithuanian poetry;
the manifestations of structuring different aspects of musicality could further
be developed and applied for the analysis of poetical texts.
