WORKSHOP
NODAL ANALYSIS & MULTIPHASE FLOW
Eng. Miguel Angel Hernández de la Bastida
Friday, January 04th, 2019

The reservoir is a subterranean rock that has sufficient porosity and permeability to store
and move hydrocarbons, it has properties such as thickness, damage, permeability, etc.
The capacity of production of a reservoir is known as INFLOW PERFORMANCE.
Through it you can calculate the: Properties of the reservoir (permeability, reservoir
pressure, thickness, damage). And the production data of the well, the latter can be
calculated through relationships such as VOGEL.

IPR-VOGEL
Vogel reported the results of a study in which he used a reservoir simulation model to
calculate the IPR (productivity index) of producing wells from saturated reservoirs. After
plotting the dimensionless IPR curves for all the cases considered, Vogel arrived at an
equation that relates the dimensionless flow rate and the dimensionless pressure.

MULTIPHASIC FLOW
It exists when there is simultaneous movement of liquids and gases that can flow in
solution, free or emulsion with different flow patterns through pipes.
Among the applications that your study has are the following:
 Calculation of pressure losses in completions.
 Design and optimization of artificial lifting.
 Design of tubing and flow lines. Simulation and optimization of production
networks.
Prior to the use of these applications, an analysis must be made of the properties of the
fluids:
 Gas (Compressibility factor Z, Volumetric factor βg, Compressibility cg)
 Oil (Bubble pressure Pb, Solubility ratio Rs, Volumetric factor βo, Total
volumetric factor βt, Compressibility co, Viscosity µo)
 Water (Compressibility cw, Volumetric factor βw)

GENERAL EQUATION
The general equation that governs the flow of fluids through a pipeline is obtained from
a macroscopic balance of the energy associated to the unit mass of a fluid, which passes
through an element isolated from the system.
