INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire which produces an abundant sou

rce of natural resources. According to the Department Of Energy, coal, oil, natural gas, and bi

omass is the main sources of electricity in the Philippines. However, on the report of the Inter

national Energy Agency's Clean Coal Center (IEA CCC), the increasing energy demand coup

led with a population growing at an annual rate of 2.3%. In the research conducted on 2003, P

hilippines is experiencing rapid population growth of 2.2% per year.

Sustainable energy source from renewable energies such as geothermal, wind power,

hydropower, and solar power plants were used to substitute natural resources as main sources

of electricity. Nevertheless, there were only counted numbers of operating power plants due t

o a requisite high cost of construction and maintenance as stated by Department Of Energy.

The Use of renewable energy specifically the Wind Power is immensely available in

the Philippines. It can help filipino consumers to reduce the cost of electricity they pay every

month. In addition, the use of renewable energies rather than using natural resources can limit

the cause of pollution in the Philippines according to Thomson Reuters Foundation.

In the report of an Energy Agency, since 1970s the Philippines has suffered on-going

blackouts that continue today in some areas. Today electricity shortages remain a major prob

lem.
Citizens of Talavera, Nueva Ecija is suffering from electrical black-outs from time to

time. Talavera Senior High School were turning off the electricity on lunch time to conserve

and save energy. Mainly, the students of Talavera Senior High School were experiencing diffi

culty in class hours because of the lack of electricity, it affects the learning process of student

s and teachers. As well as the use of electricity to charge their phones to communicate with th

eir parents when going home.

According to Bresnahan, et al. (2013) Cell phones can help strengthen the essential c

onnections between students with teachers, make students more self-directed, and they can m

ake education more applicable to real life. Moreover, Cell phone use has become a lifestyle fo

r millions of families who instantly communicate with each other and access the web.

The Student Pulse Survey from Top Hat, conducted by independent research firm Su

rvata, found that a large number of students — 75 percent — believe using personal devices i

n the classroom has improved their ability to learn and retain information. Fifty-eight percent

of respondents use their phones to take pictures of lecture slides; 41 percent use them to Goog

le answers to in-class questions; and 39 percent use them to access a digital textbook. On the

other hand, 54 percent also use cell phones to text friends and 52 percent use them to browse

social media during class.

Therefore, in this regard, the researchers come up with the study to create a windpow

ered cellphole charger. Talavera is an area abundant of the wind energy. Using a renewable en

ergy from the wind to produce accesible power of electricity to charge their cellphones.

This study will help students and teachers of Talavera Senior High School in terms o

f the lack of electricity, in addition, there would be an efficient source of electricity to charge
their phones in case of an emergency. Moreover, this study aims to lessen the burden of every

Filipino who were experiencing lack of electricity in their areas. To give an easy and afforda

ble way to charge their phones by the use of wind power which is available and accessible in t

heir areas.
