How to Enable IIS FTP Server

Use with Cardipia FTP options

Microsoft Windows (XP/7/8/8.1) comes with an extensible Web server: the Internet Information
Services (IIS). This server allows the FTP protocol, so using IIS it is possible to have a FTP server
running in your computer. This guide describes the steps needed to enable and configure the IIS FTP
server. Also include some steps to configure the Cardipia device to access this FTP server.

1. First we need to create a Windows user to be used to authenticate in the FTP server. For doing
that go to the Control Panel and select the option User Accounts

2. Select Manage another account and then Create a new account

3. The below dialog will be shown. Input the user name (for example cardipiaftp, but any user
name is OK, just try to input only letters and numbers), check Standard User account type and
press Create Account.

4. The Manage Accounts dialog will be shown, select the newly created account and the below
dialog will be shown. Select there the Create Password option
5. The below dialog will be shown. Type and confirm the password and press Create Password.
After this step, the user that will be used for accessing the FTP server have been created and a
password already assigned. Please take note of this credentials (user name and password) for
coming steps

6. Install and enable the IIS. For doing that go to the Control Panel and select “Program and
Features” and then select the option “Turn Windows Features on or off” in the left pane
7. The below dialog will be shown, make sure is checked the FTP Server option and its subptions
FTP Extensibility and FTP Service. Also make sure is checked the IIS Management Console option.
(In both cases check the option if it’s unchecked)

8. Go to Control Panel and select Administrative Tools and then select Internet Information
Services (IIS) Manager (this option will be available in the Administrative Tool if the above steps
were completed successfully)
9. The IIS Manager will be shown. Select the Sites node on the left pane, right click on it and select
the Add FTP Site… option

10. A wizard will start. Input any name for the FTP site (for example TrismedFTP but any name is OK)
and input or select the Physical Path on your hard disk that the FTP server will use (this means
the Folder in your PC where the FTP server will copy transferred files). You can select any path
and even create a new folder for it in any place of your hard disk (for example select
 “C:\inetpub\ftproot” that is a predefined root folder to be used by IIS for the FTP server files
storage). After input, select Next

11. In the shown dialog just check the No SSL option and make sure everything else looks as the
below picture and then select Next

12. In the shown dialog make sure is unchecked the Anonymous authentication option and checked
Basic. In the “Allow access to:” selection box, select Specified users and input below the name of
the recently created user. Check Read and Write permissions, select Finish and then Close the IIS
Manager
13. Add permissions to the recently created user for reading and writing on the FTP folder. For doing
that go to the Windows Explorer, locate the folder previously selected as the Physical Path of the
FTP server on step 10, right click on it and select properties

14. The Properties dialog will be shown, select the Security tab and then then press the Edit… button
15. The Permissions dialog will be shown, select the Add… option

16. The below dialog will be shown. Input the name of the recently created user and press OK
17. The Permissions dialog will be shown, select the recently added user, check the Write option and
press OK

18. To verify that the FTP server is running and working properly, open your preferred Web browser
(Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.) and then type in the address bar ftp://localhost/. The
FTP server will request the FTP server credentials, input the recently created user and password
and confirm this dialog. The content of the FTP folder will be displayed
19. After all above steps the FTP server has been created and configured, and a Windows user has
been added with permissions to read and write on this FTP. Now it’s time to configure Cardipia
to access this FTP server. Before performing the next steps please make sure the Cardipia device
is connected and configured to the same network that the PC with the recently created FTP
server
20. In Cardipia main screen select System and then Network

21. The below dialog will be shown. Verify in the left pane that the device network settings match
your current network. Input in the right pane the IP address of the PC with the recently
configured FTP server and then the user previously created to be used with the FTP server and
the password
22. Press Test Connection to verify that the Cardipia can access the FTP server. If everything goes
well, the following confirmation message should be displayed

23. If some error message is displayed, please verify every previous step of this guide and also verify
that all Antivirus and Firewall programs on the PC allows connection through the FTP server

How to allow the FTP Server Features through Window Firewall
