Avant Garde

The best form of communication, for me, has always been through the use of

images. I am a big believer in media literacy being just as important as being able to write

and speak. My visual Literacy project was the combination of my entire work to express

that visual communication is a form of literacy. Many different techniques were used to

express this argument. Everything from the song choices, the video choices, and the text

play a role in representing my whole point. Combining all of these different medias in a

certain way has created a unique project that has obtained its goal.

The music choice for this piece was very symbolic to me, because it represented

different ideas. For example the first song in the video is “Never Stop” by Gonzales. This

same song was played in the Ipad commercial for Apple. This is important for anyone

viewing the project because of the connection between the song and the company of the

commercial. It hints that I might have an interest in Apple’s products. This is important to

the narrative because all of the video content was produced on a Macintosh notebook

(MacBook Pro). Other music choices inspire a certain emotion. I choose particular songs

to help me convey a certain point in the video. For example I used the song “Here it goes

again,” by Okay Go. This song was for a football promo that did in my freshman year in

high school. Notice how the song ignites excitement and power through the beats of the

song. The lyrics of the song, on the other hand suggest that this football game was a

rivalry. Ultimately it was the combination of the songs that have the true effect of

conveying certain points.


All of the videos where done by me at a particular time in my life. Since the

project was a narrative, I thought it would be nice to see a collection of work over a

period of time. Although some videos may have different objectives for their audience,

each of them, however, is conveying a theme. This is one of my fundamental arguments

in this project. If media can convey a theme to its audience, then that audience is media

literate.

For the project to have a true effect, it needed the use of both songs and video. I

also used text. For some points, I decide to push the audience in a certain way by telling

the certain ideas. With that being said, the audience is receiving information in three

different ways: the video being played, the music being played and the voiceover. This

project has these forms of media to help its audience understand the main theme.

Overall the project was a major success. I was able to finish on time, which I

didn’t think I was going to be able to do, and the project upholds what I wanted the

project to convey. The conclusion to the project was showing the awards that I have won

for producing these films. The real point, that I wanted to convey, was that if you want

something and work for it, you can accomplish anything.
