Dehumidifier is a device which reduces or remove water contains in air. Depending on

applications & working principle of dehumidifier, it is divided in different types of
dehumidifiers. Based on its applications it divided broadly as Portable dehumidifier,
Industrial or commercial Dehumidifier, Indoor swimming pool dehumidifier. Based on
working principle dehumidifiers divided mainly into refrigerant and desiccant type
dehumidifiers. Every type of units has its pros and cons, which we are going to explore in
this article.

Types of Dehumidifiers based on its
Applications.
As mentioned above based on applications, types of
dehumidifiers are as follow:

Portable Dehumidifier: This is basically dehumidifiers

for home and offices. Capacity of this dehumidifier is
from 1o to 30 liter/day. It is mainly use in home or
offices to reduce humidity to avoid mould, bad smell,
for asthma patient and to dry laundry. Aesthetic
look and controlling features are more important for
these dehumidifier than performance. Filter offered in
these unit are of high quality and control panel
provided with functions like timer, fan speed etc.

Industrial or Commercial Dehumidifier: As name

suggested these dehumidifiers are use in industrial
process applications. Rating of these dehumidifier if
from 30 to 1200 liter/day. These dehumidifier can be of
portable type (with wheels) for fixed type (wall mount,
ceiling mount or floor mount). Industrial dehum has
bulky, strong mental body and it provided with strong
wheels if it is portable. Control panel provided with
basic functions. Filter provided I these unit is of basic
type. only humidistat provided on control panel to set
required humidity.

Indoor Swimming Pool Dehumidifiers: This dehum use

in swimming pool, spa and Jacuzzi indoor areas since all these areas has water bodies
(heated water) which has high humidity due to fast water evaporation. Generally Ceiling

mount, roof mount or wall mount dehumidifier are preferred. Wall mount units has
limitation on capacity hence it use for small home swimming pool. Roof mount dehumidifier
can be use for large Olympic size pool. while ceiling mount dehumidifier can be use for all
type of pools and gives faster result than other two.

Types of Dehumidifier based on its working principle.

Based on working principle Dehumidifiers are broadly of following two types:

Refrigerant type Dehumidifier: It is also called as condense drying dehumidifier or

mechanical dehumidifier or condensation type dehumidifier. It uses refrigeration cycle to
remove humidity from air. It consists of evaporator and condenser coil. Fan draw humid air
to evaporator where air cooled below dew point and condensation of moisture happens.
condensate water collected in tank. then dry air pass through condenser coil where it
heated and return to room to pick up humidity. This type of equipment is more economical
in terms of initial cost and operation cost. Refrigerant type units are more economical when
dehumidification has be done at high temperature and high humidity level. It consumes less
power than desiccant type unit.

Desiccant type Dehumidifiers: This types of units are economical than condensation type
when dehumidification has be done at low temperature and low humidity level. It consumes
more power than refrigerant type unit. Initial and working cost of this type dehumidifier is
higher than refrigerant type unit. This type unit consists of rotating desiccant wheel. Humid
air drawn to rotating desiccant wheel with help of process fan where humidity in air
absorbed by desiccant wheel and heated dry air release in room. Due to absorb humidity
desiccant wheel becomes wet and to dry wheel heated reactivation air passes through
desiccant wheel and wet air release outside room with help of reactivation fan.
