The incredibles
One of the generic conventions that The Incredibles follows is setting, with it being set primarily in a city or in the jungle on
an island. This follows generic conventions as cities allow for large action scenes, with lots of destruction, as well as having
things like buildings and vehicles to give a sense of scale and speed to the audience through comparison. It also adds
intensity to the scene as the destruction of the city and the civilians are something to be considered during the scene. The
jungle also matches generic conventions as the jungle allows almost limitless destruction and action as there are no
buildings or other aspects that could hinder the scene or slow the pace. The costumes are conventional to the genre as
well with sleek superhero suits in flashy colors, allowing the audience to easily recognise the characters in the chaotic
action scenes as well as showing clear binary opposition with the bright colors of the main characters and the dark black
and greys of the robot and henchmen. The large action sequences are synonymous with superhero films and expected by
the audience.
The props are conventional to the genre with guns, cars, rockets, robots and other destructive things and the sounds are
mainly diegetic, with the only non diegetic sounds being the music. The editing is rapid to keep up with pace of the action
with quick close up shots and tracking shots broken up with pans to show the scale of the scale of the action. This is also a
generic staple with the pace of the shots to increase the intensity and magnify the effect of the action. As the film is
animated special effects are not really something comparable to other films in the genre as the entire movie is computer
generated. The story follows the rise of a superhero to defeat a powerful villain, which a story often used in films of the
genre, and the characters fill the conventional roles provided by the genre with an edgy teenager, lazy husband and father,
mother who works too hard and an energetic and excitable younger son, however the damsel in distress role is reversed
with the father requiring rescue from the mother rather than the other way around, defying generic conventions.
Baby Driver
Baby driver is an action film by director Edgar Wright, with many generic conventions due to the genre of the film, for
example the location choice, which is the large city of Atlanta, Georgia. Use of large cities is a common convention in
action films as it allows for large action sequences with large amounts of people, and potential for a lot of damage keeps
the audiences engaged and creates tension. The costumes also follow generic conventions as they have a casual theme,
keeping the main characters relatable to the audience. The costumes are, however still recognisable, making it easy for
the audience to spot the main characters and not lose track of them in the action sequences. The use of large action
sequences is a convention of action films, and something the audience will expect whilst watching an action film, and the
use of conventional props helps to illustrate this, with props like Guns, cars, music players, sunglasses, police cars and
many more. Casting also plays into the generic conventions with a male protagonist hero and a female love
interest/damsel in distress. This is a typical generic convention and a feature that audiences have come to expect in films
like this. Unlike other genres there is heavy use of diegetic and nondiegetic sound through the protagonist listening to
music, something that is not conventional of this genre as usually the music used in films like this are non diegetic. The
main examples of diegetic sound are car engines, Gunshots and music played throughout the main characters MP3
players. Many of the diegetic sounds in the film are synced up with action beats, heavily linking the action and the music.
This is also unlike the generic conventions, where the music and action are usually kept separate from each other. The non
diegetic sounds are mostly made up of the music, as there is a lack of many non diegetic sounds in the film. The film also
follows the generic convention of using Todorov's narrative, with a 3 act structure, the inciting incident being him meeting
the girl, and the new equilibrium being his release from prison at the end of the film.
The editing of baby driver is used in order to keep tension and to keep the pace of the action quick, involving lots of rapid
cuts, keeping the audience invested and intrigued, and they do not lose focus. This follows the conventions of the action
genre, with the use of tense and rapidly paced action being matched by editing. The use of special effects also matches
conventions, mainly being used for things such as CGI explosions and muzzle flashes, which is relatively small when
compared to something like a Sci-Fi film, but is normal in action movies, mainly due to the time and safety constraints
around performing explosions and other practical effects on set. The film's main focus is a getaway driver for a group of
criminals with hearing issues, and his struggle to leave his life of crime and live a life on the right side of the law. Having
the protagonists being wanted criminals allows for a large amount of intense scenes, and makes the audience question
their actions. Some stereotypes used in the film are a love story between the protagonist and another character, which
does not receive a large layer of depth, which is another convention of action films. The film also follows generic action
beats, which the audience will have come to expect. This is similar to the conventions used in films like ‘The fast and
Furious’, Another action film that follows conventions with typical action beats like gunfights, car chases and similar action.
While baby driver doesn't challenge or change these conventions it does change how they are presented by combining
them with the music and other usage of music and diegetic sound.
Blade Runner: 2049
A typical sci fi film is star wars the last jedi, Some of the things that are typical of the genre and generic conventions are
lighting, setting, cinematography, casting, props, editing and use of sound. The lighting follows generic conventions with
bright white and blue lights and lots of reflections.

Blade Runner 2049 commits to the conventions of the Sci-Fi genre in many ways across the entire film in order to create
effects and an atmosphere for the audience as well. Blade Runner 2049 uses Camera following generic conventions by
using long pans and wide shots to show a large area or expanse, so that we can see the world in which the film is set,
showing it is a world different to the one we know, Normally showing areas of anomaly, things that don’t exist in the real
world, which links to the use of non-diegetic sound, as the sounds used cannot be created in the scene itself. There is also
wide use of close ups as Sci-Fi films constantly have to show key information to the viewer with direct links to
objects/abilities as the world and environment to help the audience understand the world in which the movie is set as the
film is not based in the reality that the audience knows.

Blade runner breaks away from the conventions of the genre by not using the Dutch angle to convey strangeness and
awkwardness to the audience, as the filmmakers want the audience to relate to the film in some small way as well. There
is also not as much use of tracking shots, as the audience is more of a spectator than an active participant in the film.
There is also less use of green and blue tinted hues being added to the coloration construction of the shots in post
production, instead using tints of purple, yellow/orange and grey. The film follows conventions by using lots of CGI to
enhance the scenery and to create genre specific things that do not exist in reality. It also heavily uses non-diegetic sound
as many of the things that produce the sounds in the film do not exist or are CGI creations.
Blade Runner: 2049
The setting of blade runner follows generic conventions by showing a world alternate to reality and relying heavily on a
suspension of disbelief, with various scientific explanations and solutions to fictional elements in order to facilitate it in the
audience's mind. It is set within a future with an alternate past with the discovery of new scientific principles, in relation to
the narrative, changing society and life with new technology and new political and social systems, which also follows
generic conventions. The props and costumes used in Blade runner 2049 match generic conventions by having futuristic
designs and dark colors, and the props consist of futuristic “alien-like” items such as lasers, with spaceships, virtual worlds
and advanced technology which are widely implemented into science fiction. This is effective in the genre as it helps grab
the audience's attention by having them enjoy the idea of creating and having the ability to use devices that are impossible
in reality. One of the main generic conventions of sci fi is robots and AI as well as machine intelligence, which Blade runner
2049 uses as the base of the whole films plot and story. The characters follow generic conventions with heavy featuring of
holograms, artificial intelligence, robots/androids and humanoid robots. It also follows the generic conventions of
iconography featuring space ships, lazers, flying vehicles, futuristic weaponry among other things.
