BREATHING: Deep breathing allows for comfort, relaxation,
and more oxygen to the baby POSITIONING: Upright positions are best! This can include: sitting, standing, hands & knees HYDRATION: Staying hydrated is key! Water, juice, popsicles, and broth are all acceptable BIRTHING BALL: Allows for hip movement, comfort, easier up and down movement, encourages baby to drop down TOUCH & MASSAGE: Blocks the pain signal in the brain, allows for pleasure to take over *Bare skin is best! AROMATHERAPY: Uses oils to reduce stress and tension. Administered by: massage, during bathing, or by using a warm wash cloth GUIDED IMAGERY: Day dreaming—Includes picturing yourself in a relaxing setting while you feel labor pain HOT OR COLD THERAPY: Hot compresses can be used to ease muscle tension (Warm blankets are helpful too!) Cold washcloths can be used to help cool mom down and ease tension Sucking on ice chips helps to cool mom off Ice packs are also very helpful with back pain MUSIC: Allows for relaxation and can go along with guided imagery (Known to speed up labor and decrease pain ) HYDROTHERAPY: Also known as “water” therapy: Involves mom sitting in a tub filled with water or showering. Helps with pain relief
