CHEMISTRY WORKSHEET
ALDEHYDES, KETONES & CARBOXYLIC ACIDS
CLASS : XII

1.Give the IUPAC name of the following compounds:

(i) CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-COOH (ii) CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CO-CH3
2.Write the structure of the following organic compounds:
(i) p-Methylbenzaldehyde (ii) 4-Chloropentan-2-one
3. Name the reagents used in the following conversions
(i) CH3-CO-CH3 CH3-CH(OH)-CH3
(ii) C6H5-CH2-CH3 C6H5-COO-K+
(iii) CH2 = CH-CH2OH CH2 = CH-CHO
(iv) CH3CHO CH3-CH(OH)-CH3
4. Arrange the following compounds in increasing order of their property as indicated
(i) CH3CHO, C6H5CHO, HCHO (reactivity towards nucleophilic addition reaction)
(ii) 2,4-Dinitrobenzoic acid, 4-methoxybenzoic acid, 4-nitrobenzoic acid
(acidic character)
5. Write the structure of the main product when acetone reacts with the following
reagents
(i) Zn-Hg / conc.HCl (ii) H2N-NH-CO-NH2 / H+
(iii) CH3MgBr & then H3O+
6. Write the products formed when ethanal reacts with the following reagents
(i) CH3MgBr & then H3O+ (ii) HCN
(iii) C6H5CHO in the presence of dil.NaOH
7. Give simple chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds
(i) Ethanal & propanal (ii) Benzoic acid & phenol
8. Give reason for the following
(i) Ethanal is more reactive than acetone towards nucleophilic addition reaction
(ii) (CH3)3C-CHO does not undergo aldol condensation
(iii) Carboxylic acids are higher boiling liquids than alcohol
9. An organic compound ‘X’ having molecular formula C4H8O gives orange-red
precipitate with 2,4-DNP reagent. It does not reduce Tollens’ reagent but gives
yellow precipitate of iodoform on heating with NaOI. Compound ‘X’ on reduction
with LiAlH4 gives compound ‘Y’ which undergoes dehydration reaction on heating
which conc.H2SO4 to form But-2-ene. Identify compounds ‘X’ & ‘Y’
10. Convert:
(i) Acetone to propene
(ii) Ethanoic acid to 2-hydroxyethanoic acid
(iii) Ethanal to 2-hydroxypropanoic acid
