5. EXTENDED ABSTRACT :

Most areas of Indonesia are located in earthquake-prone area, thus the infrastructure of
the bridge in that areas should be designed as earthquake-resistant bridge structures that
meet the demands of the technological developments/state of the art. Linear dynamic
analysis (elastic) and nonlinear dynamic analysis (plastic) in application on bridge
structure analysis should be well understood by bridge consultants and contractors,
especially on long span bridges. The dynamic analyses with earthquake load combination
of natural modes as well as dynamic analysis of earthquake-resistant bridge structure by
means of time history analysis should be matched with the peak acceleration for the
earthquake zone were reviewed.

Application of seismic structural response of low, moderate to strong earthquake should

be understood by academics and practitioners. Performance analysis of earthquake-
resistant structures that can predict the behavior of the bridge during a strong earthquake
which allows the plastic joints without collapse and the type of performance deformation
and sectional curvature of structural elements should be discussed in the courses.
Knowing the structural performance level in strong earthquake (design phase) can
guarantee the behavior of the structure as in the previous design assumptions.

The research focused on understanding and development of earthquake-resistant bridges

structural system has been widely practiced in Structural Engineering Research Group of
ITB. Some research results have been obtained are expected to be utilized to enhance
related course content. In the Graduate Program, one of the courses that provide the
students in order to understand the behavior of earthquake-resistant bridge structure is
earthquake resistant Bridge Engineering course.

Some current research topics in Structural Engineering Research Group associated with
ERI and relevant to enhance the course content in earthquake-resistant bridge structures
course are follow:

- Bridge structural design criteria in the earthquake-prone area

- Loading and analysis of bridge structure included/combined with earthquake load
- Design of earthquake-resistant bridge structure
- Application of performance based design of the bridge structure
- Connection system for pile head and piers.
- Analysis of long span bridges with integral and cable stayed bridge
- And others
