THE 1600S

• 1635 Boston Latin Grammar School -This was for boys ages 7 through 14, exclusive
school for boys of wealth. This was established by the Puritans.
• 1647 Old Deluder Satan Law- For every 50 houses ! Teacher was hired to teach how to
read and write. For every 100 houses one school was needed to be built.
THE 1700S

• 1740- South Carolina denies eduction to blacks.This was the first law of its kind to exist.
• 1751- Benjamin Franklin opened the Frankiln Academy. This was free of religion and
offered many classes to both boy and girls.This college is now the present day Penn
State.
THE 1800S

• 1821- Emma Willard created the first ever teacher program which helped to better
prepare future teachers.
• 1837- Horace Mann becomes the Secretary of Education of Massachutes. He is known
for establishing free public schools.
• 1874- The Kalamazoo case ruled that taxes will be used to pay for high schools.
• 1896- Plessy v. Ferguson which legally allowed segragated schools in America. Created
the separate but equl doctrine.
THE 1900S

• 1954- Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka called for an end of the segration of
schools. Stating that seprate is not equal in educaion.
• 1957- The Soviet Unon launches Sputnik into orbit.The initiation of the Space Race.
• 1958- National Defense Education Act funds science, math, and foreign language
programs in respone to Sputnik.
• 1979- President Jimmy Carter creats the Department of Education in Cabinet
THE 2000S

• 2001- No Child Left Behind to help raise education across the board in testing
nationwide.
