MYP Year 1 Math – “The World Traveler” UOI

Budgeting for a 1 Week Trip

Goal – To demonstrate your understanding of relationships between quantities and to determine if
they can help represent systems around the world.

Role – You are someone interested in going on a trip with your friend.

Audience – Yourself and the people you are traveling with.

Situation – Great news! You have a one week vacation coming up! You and your friend will be
departing Hong Kong and returning to Hong Kong. It will be up to you to decide where you will go
for the week of May 10th – 17th. To prepare, you need to research things like the cost of
transportation, accommodation, food, and any exciting adventures, day trips, or tours you would
like to do while traveling. To make sure you aren't spending too much money, you will be given a
budget or amount of money that you can spend.

Product – You and your friend will have to divide the responsibility to make sure that you do not
over spend, so you both need to create a budget. One person’s budget should include the costs
for transportation and food, while the other person’s budget should include accommodation and
any activities you would like to do. All prices should be given in USD. You will be given a template
to use for your budget. You should also include a small pamphlet that outlines information on your
destination country, the hotel you are staying at, activities to do for fun, and examples of the
currency being exchanged into RMB (3 examples). All calculations will be shown on a separate
page that must be completed and handed in before you create your budget on the computer. All
calculations must be organized and labeled correctly.

Standards - In your budget, you should be selecting and applying the appropriate mathematical
strategies to help you reach solutions in this real-life situation. You should also be using proper
math language, and communicating coherent lines of reasoning. You should be sure to be
thorough in your plan, and show your calculations. You will be judged by Criterion C & D in
Mathematics.
