Being a Mockingjay

by Andora Mae C. Calinog of 11-STEM 3

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor. A famous line in a movie which I believe
everyone is familiar with. Let me start this by saying that we are indeed in control of the odds in our life.
Which means, we have the freedom.

But, first things first, what is a mockingjay? So Katniss's mockingjay pin, like the bird itself, symbolizes a
creature with a spirit of its own. As hybrid creatures that have broken free of the control of the Capitol,
they suggest the inability of the Capitol to enforce their power over all living creatures. Indeed, Katniss is
a mockingjay and everyone can be like Katniss, a person who can break boundaries, destroy inhibitions,
fight over fears and be as free as a mockingjay.

All humans have transcendence and it is exhibited in the movie, The Hunger Games. In which the main
character breaks the chain that stops her and everyone in the panem to fight over what is right and to
fight over their freedom. It is because they are afraid to be different, we are afraid to be different and we
are also afraid to fight against the roaring waves that is in front of us. We are afraid to do a thing that is
against the will of others, especially if it is the will of someone powerful, because it is somewhat a kind
of a road not taken. And who would dare to take a road that is barely taken and everyone is unsure of
what is beyond it. But what is stopping us? Is it really the people around us, is it the possible outcome, is
it the fear, or is it just within us? I know you already know the answer, and yes, it is only within us. We
are capable of controlling our fears and it is only in our mind and no one can go through our minds that's
why we are the ones who can fight the fear in our mind. It is not hard as it seems we just need to know
and remember that the strongest power that we have is our mind and it is much stronger than our fears.

Once you already knew your capability that's when you trascend, where you became a mockingjay.

But that's only the first thing.

The second one is about bravery. Bravery. A simple word which we can simply define but can we all be
brave as what we know it is? Being brave isn't about having no fears. It is about how you can be strong
knowing fear and bad things will always be there. Bravery is not being fearless, it is how brave you are in
facing your fears.

And being a mockingjay does not only mean you are brave and free but it also means having the ability
to make a decision and be responsible with it. Just like how Katniss did, she decided to make a move to
gain the freedom of the people in panem but it is also her responsibility to any harms and consequences
that is associated with her decision and actions.

Once you already know how to control your fears, trascend to your capabilities, and knew how to be
brave and responsible enough to your decisions, that's when you realize that going against the wave isn't
always a bad thing. That fighting for what you believe in is not as selfish as what others perceive it is.
Sometimes fear just controls us and that's how we limit ourselves.

Again, control your fears, transcend, be brave and responsible.

That is how you become a mockingjay.
