Mr. Ban Ki-moon

Executive-Secretary
United Nations
405 East 42nd Street
New York, 10017, USA

Dear Mr. Ban Ki-moon:

I want to present my deep concern about modern technology, consumerism and its implications on
environment.

I consider that if the current trends in technology development and consumerism continue, it will
generate people's dependence on leisure, turning desires into necessities, promoting the production
and use of non-necessary goods.

I think that manufacturers realized that making durable products is counterproductive to their profits,
according to this their useful life is shortened and there are increasing levels of consumption. For this
reason, in many countries population growth and rapid urbanization means that people frequently
dispose of objects that can be given a second use; there is not a culture of recycling and reuse causing
an even more negative impact on our planet and to this we add that all these bad habits and practices
generate many changes in our planet programmatically as global warming due to the use of so many
electrical appliances, environmental pollution, and even the scarcity of natural.

I would suggest you to address the companies and manufacturers as they should contribute more to
social responsibility, they are focusing on producing items with a short expiration date and once this
arrives, there is no other option than buying another, because we are used to technology. In a few words,
they are brainwashing us with their flashy ads, presenting the products as necessary for life and forming
false needs in us; for this reason I demand that you as United Nations address the governments and put
control over these industries that are destroying our beautiful planet.

Sincerely,

ANDREA JULIETH MACIAS LESMES
