L.S. LOWRY

Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Manchester, a city in the north of England, in 1887. He hated school and was happy
when he left to work in an office. His colleagues there were friendly and often asked him to go to the cinema or, the theatre in
the evenings but he did not go; he preferred to go to art school.

Lowry loved walking through the city streets, looking at people doing everyday things. He painted these things in his pictures.
His parents thought his paintings were very good but nobody ever bought one. Then one day, a man who knew a lot about
art bought one and showed it to some people in the art business.

BESSIE SMITH
In 1.894, Bessie Smith was born into a poor family in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a little girl, she sang to the
world while standing outside her family’s run-down house. Her songs were
simple and her voice was strong and beautiful to hear.

Bessie performed for the first time when she was about eight years old. Her
brother Andrew played his guitar while she danced and sang on a street corner
in Chattanooga. People walking by tossed money to them.

When she was eighteen years old, Bessie met a famous singer named Ma
Rainey “Let your soul do the singing” Ma told her. And Bessie did. Her sad
songs told of the hard she had lived and the troubles she had suffered.

Bessie sang a type of music called blues. The blues grew out of the many different kinds of music sung and played
by African Americans in the 1800s. Many blues songs are about loneliness and sorrow. Others are about people
keeping their strength and sense of humor in times of trouble.

singer soon became known as the “Empress of the Blues”.

BENEFITS OF EXERCISING

If you want to be healthy and live longer, you must learn about exercising. Recently I have read a lot about this topic and I have
put into practice a program, which has improved not only my energy level but also my feelings. I strongly recommend everybody
does at least one hour of physical activity every day because through it, people will have a number of benefits.
Exercising helps both body and mind. It makes people feel happy and more peaceful. Since starting my exercise program, I
can say that I have been sleeping well, and feeling better about myself. It also helps one look fit because it burns calories and
reduces your weight. Thanks to my exercise plan, I have lost five kilos in a few months and look fantastic.

Another important benefit is the lower probability of developing certain conditions such as diabetes and heart problems.

If you decide to start an exercise program, I advise you to make it interesting and fun, set up your own timetable and make
sure you can afford it. Once you have organized your own program I suggest you to talk with an expert who can give you
recommendations in relation to your level of fitness. Don’t forget to show your doctor your exercise plan so he can approve it
based on your health condition.

I'll definitely keep up my exercises program and the great thing about it is that is never too late to start. Why don’t you give it
a try? It is a big challenge to change your life.

THE WALL

Shawna and Diana shared a bedroom. They were sisters, but they were as different as two sisters could be.

Shawna always put her things away. She liked to clean her room, then lie on her bed and read. But Diana always made a mess
of everything. She left books, shoes and games all over the place. She liked to listen to very loud music.

The two girls were always fighting.

2I’m tired of having your things all over the room!” Shawna would say “And turn down that music!”

“I’m tired of you picking up my things!” Diana would say. “I don’t touch your things”

Then one day Shawna had an idea. “Why don’t we put a line across the floor?” she said. “We’ll pretend it’s a wall. You can
stay on your side of the room. I’ll stay on my side”

They found a big roll of tape. Then they put a line across the middle of the room.

It didn’t work. Diana still left her things on Shawna’s side of the room. Shawna still picked up Diana’s thing. The tape just wasn’t
enough, so they put up a row of chairs. Next they pulled their big bookcases into the middle of the room. At last they could both
do what they wanted.

ICE HOTEL

When I first heard about an “ice hotel”, I thought it was a joke. I know about the igloos that Eskimos live in, of course, but that’s
not what comes to mind when I think of “hotel”. The thought that someone could really build an entire hotel out of ice, rent
rooms, and then repeat this process each year was really hard to believe. But it does happen! It has now become one of the
most popular ways of spending a winter vacation.

The first ice hotel was built in 1989 in a village called Jukkasjärvi in the north of Sweden, where the winter temperature is well
below zero. Building begins each-year in October, and the hotel is open to guests from December through April. By summer
the hotel has melted, but, amazingly, plans have already been made to build a bigger and better ice structure for the followi ng
winter.

Ice hotels are built with blocks of ice and hard-packed snow. Guests are given comfortable sleeping bags and sleep on beds
made of blocks of ice which are covered with soft tops. Although the air temperature in the room is below freezing, their bodies
stay warm.
Personally, I don't know anyone who has stayed at an ice hotel. If I slept there, I'm sure I'd have nothing but aches and pains.
But then, such an experience is probably worth having, and it's not every night you can drink out of an ice glass while
enjoying a beautiful view.
