TG1401 Engineering Mathematics I

1.
(a) Given 3 linear equations in 3 unknowns specified as follows:

Eq #1: 2u +3v +4w=7

Eq #2: 4u +1v + 1  w = 16
Eq #3: 1u +2v +3w=3

Let the vector of unknowns be [v u w]T. Write the corresponding augmented matrix and
reduce to its echlon form. Identify leading and free variables.
(8 marks)

(b) For the augmented matrix in Question 1(a), obtain the reduced row echlon form.
(4 marks)

(c) Use reduced row echlon form to compute solution. Is solution always unique? Justify.
(4 marks)
(d) Consider 4  4 matrix given below:

0 a 0 0
b 0 a 0 
B ,
0 c 0 a
 
0 0 d 0

Reduce the matrix B to its echlon form E and write an expression for determinant of E.
Hence or otherwise, write and expression for determinant of B. Find conditions on a, b, c
and d such that B1 exists. Argue that B1 does not exist if a = 0 or d = 0.
(5 marks)

(e) For the matrix B given in Question 1(d), compute C = B2.

(4 marks)

2.
(a) Given the vectors x1 = [2 1 2], x2 = [1 1 –2], x3 = [1 1 1]. Test if these are linearly
independent (li). If they are li, write x3 as a linear sum of x1 and x2. Is such a linear sum
unique? Justify your answer.
(7 marks)

(b) Let x1, x2 and x3 in Question 2(a) be spanning vectors of a vector space S. Find the
dimension and at least two sets of basis vectors. Does x4 = [0 1 0]  S? Can we write x4
as a linear sum of x1, x2 and x3? Justify your answers.
(7 marks)

(c) Create a matrix A having x1, x2 and x3 as its rows. The null space V of A consists of all
vectors x such that A x = 0. List all the vectors in V.
(6 marks)

(d) Let O be the origin and OA = a1 i + a2 j + a3 k. Find equation of a line that passes
through point (1 2 3) and is perpendicular to the vectors 3 i + 2 j + k and i + 2 j + 3 k.

3. For the following, leave the integrals as is if you can’t obtain a closed form.
(a) A newly discovered fluid flow is modeled via the following differential equation:

dy
 5 y  e 5 x y a .
dx

Solve this differential equation when (i) a = 0; and (ii) a = 1. Use the initial condition
y(0) = 1 in both cases.
(16 marks)

(b) The following differential equation models a thermal plant:

d3y d2y dy
3
 5 2
 8  4 y  x 2  e bx ,
dx dx dx

Write solution to the corresponding homogeneous part. Note that  = –1 is a solution to

the cubic equation 3 + 5 2 + 8  + 4 = 0.
(i) Find overall solution to differential equation for b = 3; and
(ii) Write the form of overall solution (no need to compute) for b = –2.
(9 marks)

4.
(a) (i) Let input x(t) and output y(t) of a linear system be related via the following:

d2
y t   2 y t   y t   xt  .
d
2
dt dt

Let X(s) and Y(s) denote Laplace transforms of input x(t) and output y(t), respectively.
Compute transfer function of the system defined as H(s) = Y(s) / X(s) when all initial
conditions are zero. Compute impulse response h(t) defined as the inverse Laplace
transform of H(s).

(ii) Write an expression for Y(s) given that

x(t) = exp(–2  t)  u(t),

u(t) being the unit step. Assume all initial conditions to be 0.

(16 marks)

(b) For the linear system in Question 4(a)(i), compute y(t) when

x(t) = exp (–2  t)  u(t),

This is same input as in Question 4(a)(ii). Assume that all initial conditions are 0.
