TEMPLATE AND EXAMPLES BY NGOC BACH

I How to structure your speech:

Opening part:

o Use a maximum of two sentences.

o The structure : “I would like to talk about about (someone), who I admire/ is very
smart/ would like to meet/…” can always be used in any case.

Body part: develop the following guiding questions, frequently seen as below:

- Who the person is

- What does he/she look like?
- How do you come to know him/her?

- Why do you like him/her?

For each question, use 1-2 sentences to answer.

o Try to use short, simple sentence using linking words, comparisons, relative
clauses… like you are telling a story.
o In part 2, look at the verb tenses in the questions. This is the tense that you will use
most often in your answers.
o Use the active voice of verbs almost all the time.
o Informal words make you sound more natural sometimes, for example well,
then,sure….

Conclusion: use one sentence to wrap up your story, emphasizing why you chose to talk
about the topic.

II. Vocabulary:
- Philanthropist: someone who donates money/time for charity purposes
- Talented: (someone who has) a natural ability to be good at something, especially without
being taught
- To be struck by (something): to be very impressed by something/someone
- Inspirational: (someone/something) that motivates mentally or emotionally
- Feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes

- A good example of: a role model

- To be around: to socialize with or have close physical proximity with someone
- To come up with (something): to produce, or discover e.g a solution
- To be flooded with (something): to cover with something
- To have such a great time: to have fun
- To bond with each other: to join with each other to create a strong relationship
- To raise awareness: to develop a strong understanding of something

- Gentle: considerate, kind, polite

- Well-behaved: conducting oneself in a satisfactory manner
- Bilingual: using or able to use two languages, especially with equal or nearly equal
fluency

III. Sample topics:

Well, I would like to talk about a famous singer whom I have really admired/would like to
meet since I was small, that is Alicia Keys. Keys is an American singer-songwriter,
musician, and philanthropist. She was born and raised mostly by her mother in a tough
neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

I first knew about Alicia Keys through her song named “Fallin’”. At that time, I was
struck by her angelic voice and started following her since then. What makes Alicia Keys
different from other artists is that her music lyrics are always meaningful and uplifting;
especially when they are sung through her powerful yet emotional voice. Not only is she a
talented singer with 15 Grammy awards throughout her musical career, but Alicia Keys is
also a great philanthropist. Keys is the co-founder and Global Ambassador of Keep a Child
Alive, a non-profit organization that provides medicine, orphan care, and social support to
families with HIV and AIDS in Africa and India. She actively supports feminism, inspiring
women all over the world through her songs as well as actions like the “Make-up free”
movement. She has stopped wearing make-up since 2016, even when she attends events in
order to promote natural beauty and encouraging self-confidence among women in our
society.
To me, Alicia Keys is such a good example of the kind of modern woman that I want to
become in the future. I dream that one day I will be able to meet her in real life.

Well, I would like to talk about one of my friends who is very smart; her name is Phuong.
She studied in the same high school class with me. Phuong is a fun person to be around
since she always comes up with many interesting ideas. She is also a person who
constantly supports environmental protection acts. One of her most inspired ideas was to
convince our teacher to take our class on a camping trip to My Khe beach and while we
were there, we could also help clean up the garbage on the beach. In recent years, the beach
has been flooded with tourists, thus the beach is always full of litter which they carelessly
throw away. With the help of our teacher, our class went on the trip as suggested by
Phuong. Although we were able to be there for only 3 days, we had such a great time

bonding with each other. At the same time, we also did help clean up part of the beach.
To our surprise, our action that day somehow raised awareness among the people on the
beach; some even joined us to pick up the garbage. After the trip’s success, our class all
agreed to have such trip every year and we still continue to keep this tradition until now.
Thanks to Phuong’s idea, our trip was more meaningful. I felt so lucky to know her and
study with her.

I would like to talk about my little sister, An, who is one of the most inspirational
teenagers that I have known. My sister is 17 years old; she is so small that people usually
mistake her for a 13-year-old girl. She has always been a gentle and well-behaved girl
since she was young. Unlike many teenagers her age, my sister is interested in different
type of languages. Besides English as a compulsory subject at school, she spends time on
learning Chinese by herself. She started studying to become bilingual when she was in
secondary school. Therefore, she can speak Vietnamese and English fluently and her
Chinese skills are improving day by day. She is now able to communicate with Chinese
people for common conversation. When being asked why she wanted to learn Chinese, she
told me that the reason is because of her favorite Chinese boyband. I was surprised at her
simple answer, because I always thought that one needs a bigger reason to achieve
something. At a very young age, through her determination to master different languages,
my little sister has given me such a great motivation to achieve any goal, just like an old
saying: “If there’s a will, there’s a way”
