PYP Exhibition

2019
Learning Intention:
To create a central idea
that supports the
transdisciplinary theme
of: how the world works
Success Criteria:
we will know we have
achieved our aim when
the central idea supports
the following questions:
•Isit broad enough to
offer multiple lines of
inquiry?
•Isit relevant to students
in all cultures and
contexts?
•Will it engage students in
thinking critically and
creatively?
•Isit open to a range of
student responses?
•Does it promote the
conceptual
understandings of the
transdisciplinary theme:
how the world works?
Conceptual
understandings: these are
the big ideas that can be
found in the
transdisciplinary theme
e.g. ‘the natural world’
•Is it underpinned by the
key concepts?
e.g. form, function,
causation, change,
connection, responsibility
and perspective.
•e.g.
using the key concept of
‘connection’, an example
might be:
The natural world is
interconnected with the laws
of nature.
Task 1: with a partner,
highlight the
conceptual
understandings (big
ideas) found within the
transdisciplinary
Theme.
Task 2: Pair up with
another team and share
your findings.
Feel free to make
changes at this point.
Task 3: With your
partner, explore
matching two big ideas
together.
e.g. human societies &
technological advances.
Task 3: Now create two more
combinations with different big
ideas (you could even try for
three big ideas if you’re game)
Share your ideas with another
team - feel free to make changes
at this point.
Task 4: Selecting your
favorite big idea
combination, see if you
can use a key concept to
create a central idea
•e.g.
using the key concept of
‘connection’, an example
might be:
The natural world is
interconnected with the laws
of nature.
Task 5: Using the same
favorite big idea
combination, see if you can
use a different key concept
to create a new central idea
e.g. try using causation
Task 6: Pair up with
another team and share
your findings.
Feel free to make
changes at this point.
End: Well done, that
was a lot of thinking -
so it is now time to
send your favorite
central idea(s) to your
teacher.
