Chapter 2

Introduction

2.1 Introduction to 4D View

Thank you for buying 4D View. It is recommanded to read the following pages before using or installing
4D View on the system.

4D View can be used to view and work with data produced with the GEMS Kretztechnik ultrasound
scanning machines from the Voluson
R 730 series. These data are saved to files of a special format, the
GEMS Kretztechnik volume file format.

A series of volume files are included on the setup CD-ROM disc as demo cases for a first evaluation of
the possibilities of 4D View. Additionally, demo cases in the GEMS Kretztechnik volume file format can
be downloaded from “http://www.sonoportal.net.”

For transferring volume files from a Voluson

R 730 series ultrasound machine to a PC with 4D View
there are three possibilities:

• Sending via a DICOM connection with Storage SCP as DICOM storage server.

R 730 series machine, export it using SonoViewTM and load

• Save the volume file on the Voluson
it with 4D View.

• Save the volume file on the Voluson R 730 series machine, then make a backup using SonoViewTM
and restore this backup on a PC with 4D View. In this case it is important not to mix data from
more than one Voluson R 730 series machines, because volume files and images might be assigned
an erroneous Patient ID.

Component Required
Networking card installed
TCP/IP Protocol must be running

3.2 Getting Started

If a previous version of 4D View or 3D View 2000 is already installed on the system, please uninstall
this version before starting the setup process of the new version. Even if the features of 4D View
appear familiar, please review the chapter about uninstalling (Section 3.7) 4D View, as new features
of 4D View have more items which should be removed from the hard disk or can optionally be
preserved for further work.

Before installing the software on the PC, make sure to be logged in as the user who will use 4D View on
the system. Ensure that the system is using a resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher and select “High Color”
or “True Color” display mode in order to get the best results. (True Color is recommended.) Please
review the Microsoft Windows documentation for details on how to change the resolution of the system.
Before installing 4D View please close all other non-essential windows programs.

4D View is distributed on CD-ROM. Put this CD-ROM into the CD/DVD-ROM drive. Normally, the
setup program starts automatically. If this is not the case, autostart is disabled on the PC. In this case click
the “Start Button” and point to “Settings.” Then click “Control Panel” and double-click “Add/Remove
Programs.”

ATTENTION:

4D View 3.3. CONNECTING NETWORK CABLES

3.3 Connecting Network Cables

When using an existing network, please contact the network administrator.

There are three different possibilities for installing a small private network that are described in detail
below.

Please turn off the PC first.

3.3.1 Connection with 10BASE-T Twisted-Pair Cable (Cross-Over Cable)

In order to connect only two PCs, given that the network cards installed on the PCs have a RJ-45
connector, simply connect both RJ-45 slots with a cross-over twisted-pair cable.

3.3.2 Connection with 10BASE-T Twisted-Pair Cable and Hub (Normal Cable)

In order to connect two or more systems, given that the network cards installed on all PCs have RJ-45
connectors, create a connection from all systems to the hub with normal twisted-pair cables, where each
pin is connected straight to the other end of the cable. Please read the hub’s user manual.

3.6 Configuring Windows Startup

In order to configurer 4D View or Storage SCP to start automatically when starting the computer, two
items must be added to the Windows “Startup” menu. There are several ways of achieving this. The
easiest is described here.

Click on the Windows “Start” button at the lower left corner of the screen and point to “Programs.”

If there is no “4D View” entry and “Startup” (or the equal in different language versions of the operating
system) entry, but two small black arrows point downwards (see picture above) are visible, place the
cursor on these arrows and wait a few seconds till the menu becomes enlarged. Click on the arrows
speeds up this process.

Now point to the “4D View” entry and, in the appearing menu, move the cursover over either the “4D
View” or the “Storage SCP” item, depending on which program should be added to autostart. The next
step is to right-click on the item, and to choose “Copy” from the appearing menu.

There are two additional programs associated with 4D View and 3D View 2000 which must not be
running during the uninstall process. These applications are Storage SCP and Transfer. Transfer is used
by the DICOM send function of SonoViewTM . For information on Storage SCP review the chapter
“DICOM Storage Service Class Provider.” in the help file.

The presence of these programs can be detected in the status area of the task bar. The status area is
usually positioned in the lower right corner of the Windows screen. However, it can also be situated in
the lower left or in the upper right corner.

Sample of a status area:

In this sample the sign of Transfer, an “m” in a square, and the sign of Storage SCP, a
colored circle can be seen.

The colors of Storage SCP:

For a description of the meaning of the different colors of this circle, review the chapter “DICOM Storage
Service Class Provider” in the help file.

Right-click the icons of these programs and choose exit from the pop-up menu.

When uninstalling 3D View 2000 in order to install 4D View, please insert the 4D View CD into the
CD/DVD-ROM drive. Since setup does not start automatically, please start setup as described in “Getting
Started” (Section 3.2).

When uninstalling 3D View 2000 or 4D View completly, click the “Start Button,” point to “Settings”
and click “Control Panel.” Then double-click “Add/Remove Programs,” select 4D View, click the
“Add/Remove” or “Change /Remove” button and follow the instructions.

At some point during the uninstall process this dialog appears:

Samples of Private Network Setups

This section describes the process of connecting Voluson R 730 Expert or 730 Pro machines to PCs. The
names and IP-addresses given in this example are fictional and must be adapted to any specific situation.
The description assumes that a network card is installed in the PC and that the TCP/IP protocol is running
on the Windows 2000 PC. See “Installation Requirements” (Section 3.1). Note that the explanations are
only valid if the PC and the Voluson R 730 series machine are not already connected to an existing
network or the internet. If the system is already connected to a network, ask the designated network
administrator for help when connecting the devices.

Take a cross-over 10BASE-T twisted-pair cable with RJ-45 connectors and connect the two devices.
Such a cable should be available in a local computer shop. The designated system administrator might
also be able to provide such a cable. Do not use a network card which offers only BNC connection, since
the Voluson R 730 series machines do not provide such a connector. (A BNC network can only be used
for connecting two PCs running 4D View.)

Plug one end of the cable in the appropriate connector of the PC’s network card. Then plug the other
end into the “Network-DICOM input/output” slot of the ultrasound scanner’s “Connector Panel,” which
is situated on the rear side of the machine.

For details, please review the “Connections” chapter of the Voluson

R 730 Expert or 730 Pro “Operation

4.3.1 Installing 4D View on the PC

The first step is to install 4D View on the Windows 2000 PC. If there is a different operating system run-
ning on the PC, 4D View might work nevertheless. However this is not guaranteed. Insert the installation
CD into the CD/DVD-drive and start the setup program. For more information on the process review
“Getting Started” (Section 3.2). When asked for the location to store the SonoViewTM images, enter
C:\Images.

4.3.2 Connecting the Voluson

R Devices and the PC Using a Private Network

Take three normal 10BASE-T twisted-pair cables with RJ-45 connectors and connect the devices using
a hub. Such a cable and the hub should be available in a local computer shop. The designated system
administrator might also be able to provide a cable and the hub. Do not use a network card which offers
only BNC connection, since the Voluson R 730 series machines do not provide such a connector. (A
BNC network can only be used for connecting two PCs running 4D View.)

Plug one end of the first cable into the appropriate connector of the PC’s network card. Then plug the
other end of the first cable into the hub. Please review “Connecting Network Cables” (Section 3.3.2) and
the hub’s “User Manual” for more information on this step.

Now connect the first Voluson R with the hub using the second network cable. Plug one end into the
hub and the other into the “Network-DICOM input/output” slot of the ultrasound scanner’s “Connector
Panel,” which is situated on the rear side of the machine.

For details, please review the “Connections” chapter of the Voluson

4.3.3 Configuring TCP/IP on the PC

After having connected the devices, TCP/IP protocol must be configured on the Windows 2000 PC. Enter
the TCP/IP settings dialog. For details, review “Configuring TCP/IP Protocol Under Windows 2000.”
(Section 3.5)

Choose “Use the following IP address” by clicking on the radio button next to it. The three fields beneath
the sentence should become active, i.e., it is possible to write something into them.

When using a small private network consisting only of the PC and the Voluson
R 730 series machine any
“IP-address” can be chosen. In the example “10.17.2.1” is used.

The “subnet mask” should be set to “255.255.255.0.”

Leave the remaining three fields empty. The dialog box now looks like this:

Now choose “OK” and thereby close the TCP/IP settings dialog. In addition, close all other open win-
dows.

4.3.5 Starting and Configuring Storage SCP on the PC

The PC must be able to receive images. For that purpose start the “Storage Service Class Provider”
coming with 4D View. For more details on the Storage SCP see “DICOM - Storage Service Class
Provider” in the 4D View “User Manual.”

Start Storage SCP by clicking on the “Start” button of the Windows operating system, pointing to “Pro-
grams” and choosing “4D View”-“Storage SCP.” When the program is started, a colored circle appears
in the status area of the Windows task bar. At first the circle is yellow. After a few seconds it changes
its color to green. This indicates that the program is active. Storage SCP can be launched automatically,
every time the computer is started. For details please review “Configuring Windows Startup” (Section
3.6).

In order to be able to change the settings of the SSCP it must be stopped first. This is done by right-
clicking on the colored circle and choosing “Stop” from the appearing menu. The circle changes its color
to red.

Right-click on the colored circle again, but this time choose “Settings” from the appearing menu.

4.3.6 Adjusting the DICOM Settings on the Voluson

R 730 Series Machines

The Voluson
R 730 series machines still shows the “DICOM” tab of “System Setup.” Press “DI-
COM/SonoView Configuration”. The “DICOM Configuration” dialog appears.

First enter the DICOM information on the ultrasound scanner itself. Set the “AE Title” to be “V730,” for
this example. Then enter the “Station Name“ which is the name of the hospital, in this example “Kretz.”
Leave the “Retry Count” unchanged (“2”) and set the “Retry Interval” to “1” minute, for example.

Kretz

Now the PC with SSCP must be added to the list of remote DICOM devices. This is done by clicking on
the “Add” button beneath the empty list. A new dialog appears, where the information on the DICOM
Server (the SSCP) can be entered. The goal is to send images to the PC, therefore, choose “STORE”
from the list of services.

The “Alias” can be any name. Choose “4D View,” for example. In the field “AE Title” enter the AE
Title entered in the DICOM settings of the Storage SCP, which in this case is “PC.” The “IP-Address”
assigned PC in the example is “10.17.2.1.” It should be entered in the appropriate field. In the example,
the port of SSCP is “104.” Enter the port in the “Port” field.

settings, see the chapter “Connectivity” in the 4D View User Manual. For now, simply press “4D View
default”, to adjust the settings to the values recommended for sending to 4D View.

By clicking “Save” return to the “Network” tab of the “System Setup.”

The newly added DICOM server appears in the list.

Check if the connection works. This is done by selecting the line containing the PC from the list of
DICOM servers by clicking on this line, and pressing on the “Test Connection” button. After a few
seconds the “Ping” as well as the “Verify” field should contain the string “OK.” If one of the fields
displays “Failed,” check all settings on the PC as well as on the Voluson
R 730 series machine, and the
connection itself for errors. (Review: “Troubleshooting” (Section 5))

Hint: Check if Storage SCP is running on the PC!

What type of dialog is displayed depends on the method used for sending the images. For more details
please review the appropriate chapters of the Voluson

Check whether the transfer was successful by opening the “Transfer Status” window. (Review the
Voluson
R 730 Pro or 730 Expert “Operation Manual.” for details.)

The sending process on the second machine is exactly the same as with the first Voluson
R 730 series
machine.

4.3.8 Viewing the Transfered Images on the PC

When the transfer was completed successfully, open the data on the PC. Open SonoViewTM with the
toolbar button “S” from the 4D View toolbar. (For more details, please review the 4D View “User
Manual.”)

In SonoViewTM choose “Open.” The transfered data appears in the “Exam List” and can be opened from
there.

When sending data from two or more Voluson R 730 series machines to the same PC, be careful not to
mix “Patient IDs.” When using the automatically generated IDs, no problems should occur since the IDs
are dependent on the serial number of the machine and are therefore unique. When individually assigning
IDs do not assign the same ID to different patients, since this would lead to data from all patients with
the same ID being merged, if the data is transfered to the same PC. The best thing would be to assign
each patient his unique ID and to use this ID on all Voluson R 730 series machines.

Chapter 5

Troubleshooting

5.1 Performance Problems

If some part of the application is too slow or takes too long to load, one might suspect that the program
has crashed. On the one hand, this might indeed be the case, if there are problems with the operating
system (viruses, ...). On the other hand other programs running at the same time might slow down 4D
View considerably. There are also several other possibilities which might lead to such problems.

5.1.1 Measurement Startup Too Slow

If “Measurement” takes too long to load when loading the first time, the reason might be an activated
anti-virus program. The time interval between starting measurement and a reaction of the system can be
up to 60 seconds.

Try deactivating the anti-virus program and activating “Measurement” again.

5.1.2 Opening of Datasets Too Slow

When having a delay of several seconds between opening an image and the image being displayed on
the screen, the problem might be that the system is not equipped with enough memory (RAM).

For running 4D View at least 256MB of RAM are required. However, 512MB or more are recommended.
Ask the designated system administrator to upgrade the PC or to provide a better system.

If a dataset is very huge, this problem can occur too. If this is the case, there is nothing to be done about
it. Consider the size of the dataset, when capturing the data.

5.1.3 The Program Takes Too Long to React on Input

Huge datasets or not enough RAM in the system can slow down the reaction time of 4D View drastically.

4D View - Installation Manual 64

105919 Rev. 1
4D View 5.2. NETWORK PROBLEMS

Especially, more applications are running at the same time, 4D View might take a considerable amount
of time before reacting on input. When burning a CD/DVD with an older CD/DVD burner, for example,
this might lead to complications.

Try closing other programs and restarting 4D View.

5.1.4 Testing the Connection Takes Quite Long

The process of testing a connection can take up to 30 seconds. Please be patient.

5.2 Network Problems

When having troubles sending data to or receiving data from a DICOM Server or a DICOM Printer
on the network, the first thing to do is to test the connections. This is done by entering the “DICOM
Configuration” dialog, by choosing “Settings”-“DICOM Configuration” from the programs top menu.
For more information see the “DICOM Configuration” section in the 4D View “User Manual.” In this
dialog, select the connection to be tested, by clicking on the appropriate line in the DICOM server list,
and press the “Test Connection” button.

If the string “FAILED” is displayed in the “Verify” field or in the “Ping” and the “Verify” field, there are
problems with the connection.

4D View - Installation Manual 65

105919 Rev. 1
4D View 5.2. NETWORK PROBLEMS

5.2.1 “Ping” Failed but “Verify” Succeeded

If the “Ping” test fails, but “Verify” succeeds, the connection is working properly. The remote server just
does not know the “Ping” command which is not demanded.

5.2.2 “Ping” and “Verify” Failed

A failure of the “Ping” test, and also a failure of the “Verify,” indicates that the system has encountered
a problem while trying to connect to the remote server. Reasons for this can be either a problem with
the physical network connection (cables, connectors or network cards) or with the network settings (IP-
addresses).

When using more than just a small private network, i.e., the system is connected to a larger network,
please ask the designated network administrator for help.

When using just a small private network, configured similar to the examples given in “Samples of Private
Network Setups” (Section 4), check the connection:

• Check the network settings. Make sure that the correct IP-addresses were entered (e.g. the
Voluson )
R as well as on the DICOM server system (e.g. the PC running Storage SCP).

• Check the network setup. Make sure all connections are made correctly. Review “Samples of
Private Network Setups” (Section 4).

• Check the network cables. Make sure all network cables are plugged into the correct slots. Maybe
try using a different network cable to ensure that no defect of the network cables is the reason for
the problems.

• Check the network cards. Make sure that the network cards function properly and the correct
drivers are installed. (Enter the Windows “Device Manager,” by right-clicking on “My Computer”
on the desktop and choosing “Properties” from the appearing menu. A new dialog appears. Go
to the “Hardware” tab and press the “Device Manager” button. Another window appears. When
clicking on the “+” sign next to the item “Network Adapters,” the name of the network card should
become visible. There should be no yellow exclamation mark “!” visible next to this name.
In addition double-click on the name and open another window, where additional information is
provided.)

• Make sure the correct network cable is used. A CROSS-OVER cable must be used in a small
private network without a hub and NORMAL cables are required in a small private network when
using a hub.

• Check the hub. When using a hub, make sure, it is functioning properly. Please read the hub’s
“User Manual” for more information.

When all of the above has been checked, and the connection still does not work properly, try taking the
measures suggested in the next section “Verify” Failed (Section 5.2.3). It could be that the connection
can be established properly but the remote server does not react on “Ping” and that just the verification
does not succeed.

4D View - Installation Manual 66

105919 Rev. 1
4D View 5.2. NETWORK PROBLEMS

5.2.3 “Verify” Failed

If the “Ping” test was successful, but the “Verify” test failed nevertheless, it indicates that the system can
connect to the remote server, but does not get an appropriate response from there.

Check the correct settings for the remote device have been entered, by opening the “DICOM Configura-
tion” dialog (Choose “Settings”-“DICOM Configuration” from the top menu of 4D View.), selecting the
desired device from the list of available DICOM servers by clicking on the appropriate line, and pressing
the “Edit” button. In the new window which appears, check the settings.

Make sure the correct “AE Title,” “IP-Address,” and “Port,” have been entered and that the correct service
has been chosen from the “Services” list. Note that the “AE Title” is case sensitive, i.e., it must be spelt in
the correct way, taking care of the case also. Close the window by pressing “OK” and, when any changes
have been made, test the connection again. Review “Samples of Private Network Setups” (Section 4).

Make sure the correct settings are also entered at the remote device, e.g. in the “Settings” dialog of
the Storage SCP of the remote computer. (Right-click on the colored (green) circle in the status area of
the Windows task bar and choose “Stop” from the appearing menu. The circle becomes red. Right-click
again and this time select “Settings.” Check the settings and start the Storage SCP again, by right-clicking
the colored circle and choosing “Start”). Review “Samples of Private Network Setups” (Section 4).

Check if the DICOM service is running on the remote device, e.g. make sure, that the Storage SCP is
running (green circle in the status area of the windows task bar) on the remote computer. If not, start the
service, e.g. Storage SCP, and try again. Review “Samples of Private Network Setups” (Section 4).

5.2.4 Connection is OK, but Transfer Does Not Work

If the “Ping” as well as the “Verify” test was “OK,” and the sending process seems to have been suc-
cessful, but no images arrive at the remote device, i.e., the data does not become available at the remote
device, e.g. does not appear in the “Exam List” of SonoViewTM , make sure there is enough free disc
space at the remote device. Storage SCP for examples needs about 200MB of free disc space to work
properly.

Free some disc space and try again.

5.5.1 Deactivated Items in the File Menu

When a measurement is started, some options from the “File” menu and in the toolbar
are deactivated. For example, it is not possible to “Open” a new file or to “Close” the
current file, while performing measurements.

Finish the measurement and return to the main menu by pressing the “Main Menu” button. The options
